 a sci-fi au meme
50 years ago, or 75 years ago,or 20 - it's hard to recall such precise numbers in the haze and hardship - the world almost ended. While the timing itself is remembered by few, the event serves as a sharp divide of before the Fall and after. The Fall, in all its terrible and explosive splendor, sent societies spinning on their heads, no matter if its intimate nature are unclear. Once again, humanity has had to claw its way out of the primordial pit, all its achievements sent to ruin in the face of a nuclear flare. What little governmental structure remain amongst the survivors is tyrannical, but astute. When those in charge noticed that offspring of those who hadn't been killed by the Fall were beginning to be born with unique abilities, they chose not to persecute this "new generation." Instead, they jumped at the chance to have a homegrown army to protect the fragile rebirth of man, learning little from the old mistakes.
These gifted individuals fall into two categories: those with psionic powers and abilities used for offense and those who have healing and rejuvenating properties. Apart, these are interesting parlor tricks, with psionics, called Powereds, being about to move items with their minds for a few inches or pick up heavier ones they shouldn't be able to or healers, called Sources, fixing up superficial wounds. The true potential lies in when a Powered and Source are brought together, however. Each Powered has a Source that is their match and vice versa, the lock to their key, right down to the very genetics. When the right pairing made, a Powered can move mountains or create energy weapons beyond compare, a Source can provide near infinite energy to their Powered or even bring living beings back from the brink of death. To belong to either of these groups is a high honor. So high, in fact, that as soon as a child shows promise, they are whisked away by higher authorities to be matched with their lifetime Powered or Sourced and begin their training, where, despite the risks, they will find better living conditions and more resources than they could have ever dreamed of out in the desolate, dying world.
This pair grows up together, becoming dependent on each other. Even if their personalities clash, the pull in their very nature evens things out; it is, after all, a psychic bond that connects Powered and Sourced. Without the presence of their Source, a Powered might find themselves enraged or worried or unsettled. On the other hand, a lonely Source may become listless or despaired. As two is where they find complete harmony, and their unity shows in the combat or espionage skills.
On record, romance between matched pairs is strictly forbidden. Off the books, though, it happens more times than not, with two people growing up together virtually since childhood who are programmed to be co-dependent, and it is highly encouraged by those higher up due to abilities being strengthened through both emotional connection and physical contact. There's no risk in it, in their eyes, only gain as they can terminate a pair quite easily. A Powered is useless without a Source, so the ultimate weapon has a kill-switch...and a useful weakness for blackmail purposes There are always whispers in barracks of someone who's doing a task because their Powered's or Source's life is at stake.
Once battle training is complete, each pair is assigned to an eight-man cell, comprised of four matched pairs like themselves. What these teams do depends upon their skill sets and training levels, with anything from peacekeeping to public relations to assassination being on the dossier. Yet the imperative is for those on front line is clear: protect your Powered or Sourced at all costs, even on the backs of the others on your team.
Without them, you are useless. Without them, there is no place for you in this world.
tl;dr sparknotes this because we want to get to the meme: Sentinels and guides had a baby with YA dystopian lit. After a near extinction level cataclysm, people began to develop abilities that fall into two categories: Powered (sentinel/warrior) and Source (guide/healer). Their true powers are only revealed when they find their one genetically compatible match. A shadow government kidnaps these individuals, puts them into lifebonds, trains them for combat, then sends them out in teams to do all the dirty work. Codependency, mind-bonding, unhealthy love, and bloody murder probably ensue.
- In the subject line, place your character name, canon, preferences, and whether your character will be a Powered, Source, or either.

- What will your character be doing? Being a late bloomer and only now meeting their partner? Training? On a mission? Enjoying some rare down time? Comforting their partner? Aftercare after the battle? Getting blackmailed? Climbing to the top of the ladder and infiltrating the government? Realizing their partner's getting a little too bloodthirsty? Falling in love with someone else's Powered or Source - absolute anathema. Facing certain death? It's up to you.

Waiting.

Finn, who was 8 hours late to this rendezvous.
Finn, who was missing.
It wasn't exactly something that he knew, intellectually. But he could feel it - like a gap in his chest, drawing energy in. Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong.
"They're not coming." He said eventually, his tone somehow reasonable despite the very real worry he felt. Wyatt looked worried enough for both of them. "We can't stay here, Wyatt. They're not coming. Something went wrong, and we have to move."
no subject
Not that he really believed that's what Poe meant, but he needed to say it aloud. For himself. For Max, out there somewhere, even if he couldn't hear it.
I won't leave you.
"If they got caught, where would they be taken?"

The fact that they'd been separated at all was something that Poe was still on edge about. The entire point of their bonds was that they were stronger together. But orders had come from on high, and Maximus seemed to understand what they were for, and Poe trusted him.
Trusted that he knew what he was doing, anyway. Not that he wouldn't do something stupidly brave and heroic and get them all killed.
(Not that he would have really minded, but the whole point is that he was supposed to be there for it. No way was he letting Finn die, out there and alone.)
He jumped down off the wall he had been sitting on, landing with a heavy thump, but a three-point landing.
"My first guess would be a re-education camp. Get them - unbonded. Probably why Maximus didn't want us there. Hard to unbond when you don't have a pair." He left the rest unsaid. Hard, but not impossible.

Buying time - Wyatt might have called it a smart move, if he wasn't too busy cursing Max for leaving them behind. (Leaving him behind. They were better together.)
If he weren't too busy worrying.
If he weren't too busy imagining tearing everyone between them limb-from-limb,... even if he weren't a Powered.
He stepped back, turning, moving toward the waiting shuttle.
"If they figure it out, they'll be expecting us."
no subject
"That's the hope." Not that he really wanted them to do anything to Finn, but there were terrible options and then there were worse options.
His hand was already reaching out, pilot's helmet zooming into his palm from where it rested a few feet away.
"Then we'd better move as fast as possible. Guess you're my co-pilot."
no subject
He climbed the ramp and crossed to drop himself in the chair beside Poe's and eyed the panel. He knew the hows and whats - he was a pilot too. But he wasn't Poe.
And he wasn't Finn, however often he might have watched the pair of them work together.
He adjusted the seat without looking at Poe.

Archie Kennedy | Hornblower
/slams down
or other hijinks i just like the space navy]
.....y /o\
It feels unfair, to feel so happy, and yet there's no doubt that a good part of him is. It's nice, after all, to be with someone he's chosen. It's nice, to be with someone who feels so much like a whirlwind and solid ground at once. It's not at all like he imagines being with Horatio would be (nothing could be) but-- It's good. It makes him happy.
To his credit, he does his best not to drown his Powered in the feelings. Does his best, especially when he's spending more-- private time with the new Lieutenant, to put up careful shields between himself and Horatio so that he doesn't get hit with anything unexpected.
But it won't stop Horatio from catching the new glow of contentment the Source walks about with, these days. Likely doesn't stop him from seeing (with the familiar eye that only Horatio and Alexander have) the slightly ruffled nature of his Lieutenant when Archie comes over for their usual game of chess.
/hollow laughter into the night (/get some archie tho)
Second Lieutenant Archie Kennedy is, after all, one of the people in the universe he most wants to see happy. It does them both worlds of good to have his Source calm and contented, happy at his core. They both do better when Archie has a clear head and an open, cheerful heart. The Admiralty gets more from both of them when there's something bright and fiercely pleased emanating from the Source, bleeding into the Powered and bolstering the final psionic action.
More than that, it's wonderful to see his friend doing well. Being captain had left him with precious few people he could truly call 'friend,' after all, and there was a nearly constant press in his heart to see that those he did cherish were happy.
It isn't fair that the development torments him. It isn't fair to Archie in the slightest that this firm, solid happiness should be a source of delicately maddening pain. This should be a good thing. This should be simply and uncomplicatedly a joy to notice in his lieutenant.
It isn't fair of him that he can barely manage a smile as he glances up from his work. "All right, Mr. Kennedy?"
/headpats for horatio (and B))) for archie)
Makes it, at any rate, a little easier to smile at Horatio even when the other man can't quite smile back.
"I am, sir. And yourself?"
my heart is in two directions at once this is amazing and terrible
He doesn't mind lying to others so entirely much. There's nothing quite like a captain's stolidness, after all, to keep morale whipped up in times of peril or uncertainty. Hiding his panic from the crew with utter lies about their certainty of survival was practically expected.
It's much more difficult lying to Archie.
Part of it, of course, is the fact he knows the other man can feel the guard he's set around his emotions. He knows that Archie can guess at exactly why he's holding himself back, exactly what he's trying to keep from bleeding out and poisoning the air between them. The much larger part of it, for better or worse, is simply a distaste for lying to the best friend he has in the universe.
"Although I expect we'll all be-- a little better after our next shore leave, wouldn't you think?"
i feel that my dude
It makes his smile a little more subdued (though, somehow and wonderfully, he's not been able to lose it entirely yet since he met Alexander) when he bobs his head in a nod.
"I think-- everyone benefits from a little-- room to breathe, yes."
why are we like this
They can make this work. They have to make this work.
"Most won't object to a bit of time on solid ground, either, I'd reckon."
because we are suffering?
