Lacus' parents needed her watched after, and Valter was their last feasible option. He'd even made a standing offer to fly her both ways if they ended up choosing him. Valter's home was small enough to still be cozy, but there was space enough for a family to be living in it. There was a bathroom and walk-in closet for the master bedroom. The guest bedroom was made and ready for her, down the hall upstairs from his. A loft overlooked the living room, where there was a fireplace as well as the couch and television. Pots and pans hung over the sink in the kitchen. There was a door to the back porch in the kitchen, too. Laundry and washing machine in the basement, which was finished but quite small. There was a locked door down there behind the stairs. She was welcome to whatever she liked.

A couple of hours after nightfall, Valter was home with dinner. In a comically large paper bag he had take-out food for them both. A few varieties of burgers, French fries, perfect onion rings, and a salad at the bottom.
