The meat had at least not turned. "My maid has been instructing me, but I think that she will always be better at it than I am. So far, she hasn't asked any questions about why I cannot cook."
She made a very poor country wife. "And no one as questioned you at the Wall about my disappearance?"
no subject
At her question, he shook his head. "The ravens came for a few weeks, and were answered that the wayward Queen had not been foolish enough to venture so far North. They've stopped. Every now and then, I hear the men bring back rumors from Mole's Town that you've been spotted here and there. I like the more colorful ones the best."

Margaery smirked, remembering a few of the tales. "I think I prefer the story of my life in Essos the best. Where I am a lady of the pleasure houses and am raising an army of loyal men to rule the islands across the sea. It's rather ambitious of me, don't you think?"
no subject
Jon laughed. "I certainly wouldn't put it past your abilities to carve a little empire out for yourself," he told Margaery, giving her a squeeze. He'd always made it clear just how much he admired her strength and wisdom, apart from the way he felt about her.
"Although I'm not as fond of the part of that story where you keep a harem of men at your beck and call to satisfy your urges." It had to be love, Jon thought, to be jealous of preposterous and imaginary rivals.

"I certainly wouldn't mind being somewhere warm, even if it was across the Narrow Sea." As much as she was glad to be near Jon, the North was too cold for her and she was not impressed with the snow. The reward, however, was worth the price.
She grinned at his jealousy, remembering how he had teased her about how he intended to visit the Reach and appreciate the fashions there. She had been jealous then, but not as sharply as she would be now, if Jon spoke of Mole's Town. It didn't stop her from teasing him. "I hear that the men of Lys are well skilled."

He chuckled at the mention of warmer climes. Jon might have been born a Northener and lived all his life here, not even his blood was cool enough to consider anywhere so close to the Wall to be truly fit for living. But it was the price paid to defend this part of the world from what lay beyond, and for Margaery, it was the price to remain close to him.
His eyes narrowed. "I think I prefer you surrounded by that sellsword army, the un-something. You know, the one made up of nothing but eunuchs."

She leaned her chin on her hand, grinning as she continued to tease him. "The Unsullied? Ah, but I will need loyal advisers. Seasoned men of the world."
no subject
He laughed as they continued to volley the idea between them. "Oh, yes. Very seasoned. Many, many decades of experience."
no subject
She had felt something similar in King's Landing. "Unless you have an objection?"
no subject
"There are always the examples of the virgin queens in the old stories, who saved themselves in order to preserve their power."
no subject
"Do your brothers not have theories where you go when you leave the Wall? I imagine they must say you are in Mole's Town."
no subject
He shook his head. "Most figure I've gone to Mole's Town, yes. Others that I keep a secret home among the Wildlings. The most amusing is the new one, though-- that I turn into a wolf to go hunting alongside Ghost in the wilderness."
no subject
She grinned, a gleam in her eyes. "I enjoy that story." Moving from the table to circle around him, her fingers toyed gently with his hair. "There is a great deal of wolf in you. A wildness that I love."
no subject
At her words, he returned the smile and gave a low, rumbling noise that served as his approximation of a growl. "And it loves you back." Jon reached up and kissed her hand. "Now sit back down and let's finish this fine meal before it goes cold. A little wine in front of the fire afterwards and then perhaps you can coax the wolf out to play."
no subject
At the end of their meal, she collected the dishes and plates to clean later. He had requested wine and she had found a passable vintage, though nothing could ever compare to Dornish. "Was supper to your liking?"
no subject
"Come, my love. We'll warm up with some wine, and then when supper has settled, we shall warm each other up some more in bed."
no subject
"I only wish that I could do more for your visits, offer you more than paltry meals and a cold room at night."
no subject
He curled his arm around Margaery, holding her even closer. "Now let's talk no more about leaving until it has to happen. Let us just enjoy what we have." Jon tilted his head and placed a kiss on her temple, breathing her in. The world could wait.
