insomnia;

the i n s o m n i a meme

It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?

• Post with your character (note the name and fandom in the subject).
• Other people reply to you by generating a number from 1 to 10.
• Have fun!

01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet.
02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops.
03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it.
04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them...
05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort.
06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help?
07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on.
08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them.
09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you.
10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario.

no worries! just glad to be able to thread with cor :)

[Maybe it feels like a hallucination that Cor is sitting complacently at a table, what with has to be a ration of cup noodle, because Prompto nearly rubs his eyes out of disbelief that providence would provide happenstance to see him here, of all places. Nevertheless, the familiar sound of that voice makes him snap to, and he tilts his head, slightly amused. It had felt like ages since the older male had begun re-purposing their journey- from what was supposed to be a simple road trip to bring Noctis to his betrothed, to the unpredictable form that it took as of late- raiding tombs, communing with Astrals, and... occasionally giving some people who ran out of luck some extra supplies to fix cars, of all things.

(He's definitely not going to give a status update about that last part to the marshal, seeing as they probably had more important things to do, but they all agreed, at least to the best of their ability, to come to the aid of anyone who needs it as a duty and love for Lucis.)

Pocketing his camera and swiping a piece of unruly hair away from his cheek that had been swayed with the gentle breeze of the overlook, he rounds his way to the table, waving a little as he makes his stride. Looking over, he sees the faint glow of light off the hood of the Regalia, which means that Cor already probably knew that they were there... and he lightly wonders if he would sneak out before the morning hit, avoiding the chance to greet them since time was a precious commodity for someone who had so many daemons to face- and from the looks of it, maybe he was being pensive enough to be staring at demons of his own.

Prompto had usually felt a slight bit anxious and awkward around the other, a vague callback to the day that Cor had given him his official Crownsguard uniform. Back then, and it's funny to think of this as back then since it really only had been a handful of weeks, he was so proud to accept it that he could barely sit straight.]

H-hey! [He looks back at the scenic ledge and then the table.] Way to be a creeper. You've been sitting here the entire time?

[Even now, when he looks beat, he still has it in him to crack a joke. He's not sure if he's welcome to the table or not, not sure of where the bounds of familiarity are, and his fingers dance around the top cornice of the chair before he gives up and pulls it back, offering himself to sit.]

And judging by your late night snacking, I'm guessing you're not ready for bed either, huh. Oh- is it cool if I sit? I didn't wanna interrupt something if you're like... deeply lost in thought.

I've been here the whole time. Longer than you have. [ There's no shame in pointing that out, the marshal taking zero offense at the word creeper. A joke is just a joke and sometimes they do lighten the mood even if they are pretty terrible. Just as Prompto suspects, Cor has seen the Regalia parked nearby. He's even run some checks to know where the boys are staying all to make sure that nothing is going to bother them during their stay. It's an old habit but Cor would rather take some time to do that than to realize he's missed something again and it's ended in disaster.

The marshal tries to bat those thoughts away, giving a nod as Prompto makes motions to sit.]

I would have said nothing if I minded an interruption. [ He could have just sat there and made no noise, knowing full well that Prompto may have wandered off in another direction and known no better. The gunner is also right on the assumption that Cor would leave before the sunrise. If the prince and his companions knew that the marshal was meddling they would change their behaviors due to it. Cor takes a moment to fish yet another prawn out from his cup noodle (where were they even coming from at this point? It was like they knew...), wondering if he should even answer Prompto's comment or deflect it with one of his own.]

I don't sleep much, I can normally be found somewhere at this time of night. [ It's not a weakness really.] What is it that has you out and about?

[There's a comment there that he doesn't make in regards to Cor being around longer than he has, but considering he's just invited himself in, it's probably... not the best of best times to be rude to his host and tag him for being two and a half solid decades older than him. Nope- that would be really poor form.

Prompto can't help but eye the particular motion of removing the seafood from his dish. This would be a travesty to Gladio, whose only remarks on making the perfect cup noodle involved meat, egg and shrimp- so... luckily the guardsman is fast asleep and away from this potential police scene that could have gone down.]

You could've just ordered it without that stuff in it, y'know.

[Offering a small smile, he crosses his legs by their ankles under the table. Prompto thinks, at least for the most part, that the fact he was picking things out of it meant that there was a mixup with the provisioning- at least, he considered Cor for being the type who was kind of... particular about the way he liked things. Could be wrong, but after all, he was ever the student of people's mannerisms. And besides. It always helped him figure out how to make others groan at him when he tried to lighten the mood.

(Or troll. Either way you look at it.)]

You're gonna get me worried about your health. Not sleeping, wandering the streets at night, eating canned tuna all the time. Sheesh.

[Fidgeting with his glove, he sucks in air through his teeth.]

I dunno. Just been a rough few days, s'all. Thought it'd be nice to come up here and chill for a bit.

[ Older and wiser is the phrase you're looking for, Prompto.

The seafood is a problem still. Cor is removing the shrimp with what seems to be a practiced ease, the kind that comes with repetition. Everyone has their own hangups and that includes immortals.]

I did order it without. The vendor got confused and before I realised it they had closed for the night. [ There's a small shrug of the shoulders, enough to convey that it's really no big deal when it comes to noodles, though quickly enough Cor gets fed up and just pushes the whole lot to one side as he opts to lean back and fold his arms instead.

The mention of tuna gets a small flicker of amusement in Cor's eyes as he thinks back to the last time. Funnily enough Prompto's words aren't the first time he's heard that sentiment; other hunters and even Monica have expressed as much. Since the fall of Insomnia, Cor has found himself sleeping less and less, eating only to keep himself upright more than anything. Prompto will be able to tell something isn't right just through the immortal's posture; folded arms, shoulders straight, he's subconsciously on the defensive.]

You wouldn't be the first. [ Cor's gaze drops to where Prompto is fidgeting with a glove. Just from that it doesn't seem like a rough few days and he peers back over at Prompto, using eye-contact to try and get the blond to confess. (It usually worked in the citadel).] A rough few days?

Dude. I'm not gonna be the last pleb who does it, either.

[From the looks of it, he does seem malnourished, which was something that Prompto did have cause to worry over. Then there's the look to his eyes that he hasn't gotten a solid wink of rest in forever, and it makes him feel uncomfortable to think of how hard he must be pushing himself. Everyone had things to fight for that they had lost, will lose in the days to come, but he can't even put himself in Cor's shoes enough to understand what years of loyalty felt like when there wasn't much of anything left to protect. Sure- repurposing, and helping the people of Lucis was a beautiful act in itself, but it was the same sort of sadness he had when he thought about how Noctis was going through the grief of losing his father.

He would never stop having a bleeding heart for everyone that he cared about, no matter how little he perceived he could actually do to help. As he lets out a brief sigh, he sees a pair of eyes fixated on him and it's rather unnerving, to say the least. He always felt anxious around people who were, ultimately, direct.]

Hoping that one day I fit into this uniform you gave me.

[Because, at the core of everything, he doesn't want to compound reasons to make Cor start to worry about him- not when he has more than enough on his plate... and kind of like the bits of seafood that rest next to a half eaten bowl of soup, he couldn't pick off the pieces enough. There are so many problems out there to fix, and so little of a task force to get them done.]

[ No, Prompto wouldn't be the last. In fact, Cor is certain that Monica at the very least is gearing up for another attempt of getting the marshal to rest for a day and there's the suspicion that she'll be recruiting hunters to help out with that. He's been to see one of them in Lestallum today and somehow, mysteriously, there were no hunts that needed doing despite Cor overhearing about flan troubles nearby.

Funny, that.

He keeps staring, unblinking until Prompto finally gives some semblance of an answer. It would do; Cor wonders if there's more to it but as a topic starter it works. ]

You'll never fit into your Crownsguard uniform, Prompto. [ Cor pauses, wondering if he should even be saying this or not. Then again it's not like Clarus can charge out of the woodwork and start berating the marshal for it.] No-one truly fits into their uniform, the concept of the Crownsguard constantly changes and anyone who says otherwise is a liar. You protect your King, but the threats that show up are always different.

[ Cor isn't even sure if that helps or if it even addresses the issue, realizing that he's talking more to himself than the blond right now. His uniform is drastically different from what it was mere months ago so to speak and the marshal realizes that he's gotten away from the subject somehow. Maybe he does need to sleep at some point.]

I keep telling you that you'll get there.
