THE DAEMON MEME

In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a daemon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Daemons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).


Basic Daemon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's daemons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the daemon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a daemon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's daemon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Daemons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but daemons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's daemon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

- Just design a daemon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject.
- Check out other people's daemons and let your daemons interact too.

Nisere isn't really a party type of person. But it's a party honoring his father, and he'd had a hand in the planning, so of course he was going to be there.

Not that it isn't exhausting anyways. He'd been up all night the night before streaming, then here at the venue all day coordinating and handling the staff and food and decorations and everything.

But he's not planning on staying all night - or at least planning on sneaking away at some point to take a nap - so he can do this. Eidea presses her face against his leg and he reaches down to pet her, even while holding the mass of his hair in his other hand into a knot on top of his head. "I'm almost done," he told her, then finished tying his hair up. He straightened his clothes - no suit, the second Eidea touched anything black it was instantly white with hair.

"You shouldn't have streamed last night," she said with a huff and laid down. Nisere was wearing a white sweater and slacks, and a grey turtleneck, and he looked utterly handsome. Also, somewhat feminine, but she knew Nisere didn't mind that so much.

"I know, but I wasn't planning on being up so long... I should have cut it short." Nisere shakes his head and adjusts everything one more time. "Come on, Dad should be here soon." He leaves the private room and heads out towards the main hall. It's all prepared and waiting for guests.

There's only a few people here so far. Notably, his father, and his father's bodyguard-slash-assistant. Nisere's never met the man, but he looks professional enough, his dog daemon standing at his side, looking alert and attentive. She's no match for Eidea in size, though.

Nisere heads across the hall, then breaks into a light jog. "Dad!" He yells just as he flings himself into his father's arms in a rush, not a care at all for the other man. Nisere knows he looks very little like his father. Richard is tall and broad and white, and Nisere is the very opposite, the only child of his late second wife. Nisere's older brothers are very much the spitting image of their father, but they're not here yet.

"How are you doing?" he asks, curling his arms happily around him. Eidea sniffs at Richard's leopard daemon carefully, tail wagging.

Nisere pulls away after a moment, then turns to the bodyguard, sticking out his hand. "Nisere. Dad told me he hired somebody, I'm glad to get to meet you."

[The fact that the bond between Credence and his daemon, a black mamba named Eve, was stretched meant that she could move away from him if she wanted to explore. That was something that almost made it for the pain that took to accomplish that stretched bond. The only problem was that he lost sight of her on occasion and then Credence had to track her down without bringing too much attention to himself.

It wasn't as if Eve wanted to get so distracted, or that she enjoyed spying on people and lurking on corners. But she could swear that the lady's chipmunk had been a different colour a few seconds ago!]

Tiao had been Chirrut's eyes for as long as anyone could remember, the long-legged, long-tailed desert cat often found just out of sight around a corner or on a rooftop nearby. She was also a bit of an instigator of fights herself, but that was to be expected.

[Credence's daemon makes people wary so she's often curled around his waist or clinging to his arm. She's a black mamba named Eve. Don't get fooled by her appearance, she's just as shy as him, if a little more curious.

When Credence's adoptive mother felt like punishing him, she would keep them apart. That, combined with his witch's heritage, helped to stretch their bond. They can travel away from each other to a far greater extent than normal people would without feeling pain or dying.]

There were really some things which intelligence training couldn't prepare you for, and Cassian happened to be collecting such things. Right now he was looking uncharacteristically frazzled as he walked up to Bodhi in the Yavin base's hangar, and bluntly informed him, "I have a fox that got itself stuck in the machinery of that shuttle over there, how good are you at disassembling the ships you fly?"

He let that sink in for a moment before he realized this was the kind of situation that required more information. "Mina thought she had caught an interesting smell," he added, well aware that it didn't truly make it better. But the sled fox shared his love for sniffing out secrets, and unfortunately, his penchant for finding trouble as well. Such setbacks were inevitable.
