[ She lets out a soft hiss when her ankle is touched, but nods to his question. ]

Unfortunately, yes. It would be easier if it was broken.

[ That's an easier fix. But the damage done from a sprain? Even after using the latest medical tech there will be some residual weakness for some weeks. It's just the nature of the injury and the complexities of the human body. ]

And this on top of the dead ends we've had tonight trying to find out Talon's next move.

[ She lets out a huff of annoyance. ]

I'll be right back.

[He'll leave her on the bed momentarily as he steps out into the hall, heading for the ice machine. Jack tries to make the trip as quick as possible, and soon enough he's returning with a bag full of it, dumping some in a towel to make her a compress.]

We can worry about Talon once you're back on your feet.

[Sure, the less time they spend on this mission the better, but he's not about to rush a recovery so they can get the intel they need. This isn't something he wants to do sloppily.]

[ She sets back her head on the pillow while he's gone, closing her eyes and again cursing her clumsiness as her ankle throbs. She doesn't like to admit to being delicate, but in the presence of a super soldier, how can she be anything but? It's frustrating to feel like a weak link, and she's determined to contribute to this mission despite her injury.

When he returns, she opens her eyes and releases a sigh. ]

We can at least go over the case file again while we wait. I can't stand sitting here being useless. I'll go crazy.

[He’s no doctor, but spend enough time on the battlefield as he has, and you learn a few things. Jack wraps the compress around her ankle, standing and leaving the bedside only to present her with a bottle of aspirin that he presumably procured when he ran for the ice. With his mask off, it’s easy to see the raise of his eyebrow at her suggestion they go over the case file.]

You sure you don’t want to rest?

[Of course she doesn’t—he knows her more than well enough, but Jack is at least going to try.]

[ She takes the bottle and uncaps it to shake out two aspirin. ]

Of course not! We have things to do. And I don't want to slow down our investigation anymore than I already am.

[ One might call her a workaholic, and they wouldn't be wrong. A silly twisted ankle isn't going to stop her. They're doing important work that might save lives, so of course she isn't going to put her own needs first. ]

Could you get me a glass of water, please?

[mylawn]

We're not in that much of a rush.

[But he expected her to insist, and Jack will relent, especially if letting her go over the case files means she doesn't try to exert herself too soon. He stands again, disappearing into the bathroom for the glass of water. When he returns to the bed, he has the holopads in hand, too, and passes her one.]

[ She focuses on downing the aspirin with water first before setting the glass on the nightstand and lifting up the pad. ]

Oh, please. Like you would not be rushing to do work were our places reversed.

[He’s just going to sit here and watch you, Angela. She’s right of course, but Jack is intensely stubborn, and he’s not going to cop to any of it.]

Well, they’re not reversed. Someone’s got to tell you to take a break.

Hmmph.

[ No, their places aren't reversed, because it would take a lot more than a set of stairs to take him down. Angela is trying her best to rally despite the pain, because she can't stand the fact that she might hold them back from their mission. Every Talon agent they stop means another life saved. Of course, she can see the irony in this. As a doctor, it was always her running after Jack, telling him to rest up, telling him to slow down and look after himself, but there always seemed to be another mission to do and no one heeds a doctor when they're that determined. ]

And I suppose the job is left to you. All those years I tried to get you to slow down and not work yourself too hard, and now you're turning it around on me.

[mylawn]

It's my revenge.

[Even if he likes to think he tried to be a good patient, back in that former life of his. He's self-aware about his stubbornness, however. His penchant for rushing headfirst into things without much regard for his own self-preservation. She's dealt with more than enough of that, and this is tame, in comparison.]

You had it coming, Doc.

[mercyful]

Are you saying it wasn't nice to have someone always worrying over you? Not even a little?

[ She had spent a great deal of time being concerned for him in the old days. It didn't matter to her that he was a super soldier; everyone needed someone to have their back. ]

[mylawn]

That's not what I'm saying.

[His voice is try, but the corner of his mouth quirks up in the slightest indication that they're teasing each other, now.]

I don't know how I woulda made it through half the things I did without you.

[mercyful]

Oo, flattery. Do go on.

[ She smiles a winning smile. ]

But only because I'm still waiting for the pills to kick in.

[ And it would be nice to hear these things before he clams up again and puts on his tired old soldier face. ]

I'm just stating an objective fact.

[Shrug!]

Not saying anything you don't already know.

But it's still nice to hear. Believe me, the number of times patients have insisted they aren't injured and to leave them alone far outweighs those who say say I've done a good deal for them.

[ She reaches out her hand towards his. ]

Though this time, I'm patient and you are the temporary doctor.

[ Quite a role reversal here. ]

Things will go back to normal soon enough. Then I can worry after you again.

I believe it.

[The last thing he ever wanted was for Angela to feel unappreciated, but he knows that she works an often thankless job. He likes to think he didn't take her for granted, but even a few months doing the solo vigilante gig had made him miss having a doctor like her. Sure, he can perform basic first aid on himself, but Angela is pretty much irreplaceable.]

I'm not that bad, am I?

[He's well aware that he is that bad.]

[ She chuckles and pats his arm before looking back at the datapad in her other hand. ]

Do you really want me to answer that?

[ People like him -- soldiers like him -- are dedicated to the mission and brush off anything that gets in the way of completing it, like their own health and safety. Jack is just one of many to give her trouble over the years. ]

It's a good thing I like a challenge, and have no problems talking back to you.

[Now that she's brought it up, Jack isn't going to pass up a chance to find out what she really thinks, though Angela has always been truthful with him in that department. What this really does is distract her from both the pain and her mission, and that seems more important than anything else right now.]

[mercyful]

[ Her attention shifts from the pad back to him, and she sets it down on the mattress while giving him a faint smile. ]

There were times when you were that bad, yes. In a way, I admired your tenacity, when I wasn't pulling my hair out being frustrated by it. You're a great leader and I would follow you to the ends of the earth, mostly because I would be trying to stop your bleeding as you ran away from me.

[ She grins at him teasingly at that last bit, but she does mean what she says. It's never easy being a doctor with patients who don't want treatment. He was a particularly stubborn patient too, since he had the super soldier excuse. But super soldiers can bleed too. ]

[mylawn]

[He raises an eyebrow like he doesn't believe her, even though he knows full well that yes, he was exactly like that. It had all made sense at the time, of course, and he's slightly less destructible than normal humans, so he'll stand by all his decisions to take hits.

It's all in the past, anyway. Jack laughs a little, an exasperated sort of sound, and he sits on the bed.]

You always managed.

[mercyful]

Oh, I did! What kind of doctor would I be if I didn't, hmm? Not a very good one, I'd imagine.

[ He and some of the others in Overwatch certainly kept her on her toes; kept her skills sharp. ]

I suppose that's why this frustrates me so much.

[ She gestures to her ankle. ]

I always manage, but not in this case. I have to wait until we can get back to base to properly heal myself. But I've learned my lesson for next time. I will definitely be bringing some biotic treatment packs with me on my next undercover mission.

[Jack knows this feeling more intimately than he'd like to admit--sidelined, useless. It's not exactly fun, and the expression on his face becomes a little more sympathetic. He reaches out and puts a hand over hers, trying his level best to make it as sincere as he can. He's not exactly well-practiced in these kinds of maneuvers anymore.]

It's just a sprained ankle. The mission can wait.

[Perhaps uncharacteristic of him to say, but he seems to mean it.]

[ She can tell he means it, and that means the world to her. He's been so gruff and stern since he resurfaced, trying to forget the man he was and count him as dead forever. But Angela knows he can't erase everything. It's in moments like these that she sees the old Jack again, and she cherishes it. Smiling faintly, she lifts her thumb enough to brush against his hand. ]

That's very good of you. And I do think these pills are starting to do their job. Perhaps we should wait to look over these files, and I should sleep a little.

Good to hear.

[Because, of course, the last thing he wants is for her to be in pain, especially when there's very little he can actually do to alleviate the situation. Ice and painkillers will only go so far.

Hearing her relent on the case files is a small victory, but it feels good nevertheless.]

Get some rest. I'll be here.
