SPACE OPERA AU

A space opera is defined as "a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, as well as chivalric romance, and often risk-taking." Star wars is probably the most well known example, but one could also look to the Gundam or Macross series, some parts of Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy, Battlestar Galactica, Jupiter Ascending, Legend of Galactic Heroes, or maybe even Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

This meme is for all your overly dramatic space adventure needs. Leave a comment with your character's name and canon and maybe a few AU ideas or prompt preferences, then look around and tag other people and blow up some spaceships.

HERE ARE SOME PROMPTS IF YOU'RE FEELING UNINSPIRED

1. Commanders
You have your fleet of horribly beweaponed starships. They have theirs. Who will win, and what can you learn about someone from how they maneuver their fleet?

2. Boarding operation
Okay, so...you lost. Now the enemy is here, burning a hole in the side of the ship so they can come on board and probably not do anything good. Prepare to make your last stand.

4. Xenophilia
"But how can I love you, when you are an Earthling and I am a Martian? It has never been done before!"

5. Space-balls
No, not the movie. The party. The upper crust of the galactic federation (or whatever) gathers today to have a bit of fancy fun. Beautiful music, tasty snacks, fabulous outfits, and outside the windows you can see alien world, spreading out to the horizon or hanging below the space station like a giant glittering marble. Are you used to this kind of thing, or did your invitation arrive by accident? Maybe you didn't get invited at all!

6. Enemy Mine
Your people and their people have been at war for who knows how long, but now circumstances are forcing you to work together. When the alternative is death at the hands of a mutual enemy or a hostile environment, maybe your foe isn't quite so unrelateable as you thought.

7. Repairs
The reactor's going critical. Or there are mines stuck to your hull. Or you need to get the engines working before you drift into an asteroid field. In the depths of space, there's no room for fucking up.

8. Space Royalty
"Ladies an gentlemen, all bow before the Queen of Jupiter, and her escort the Duchess of Orion."

9. First Contact
The first time your species has met their species face to face. Maybe you're diplomats, meeting under formal circumstances and representing your entire race. Maybe you're both out in the depths and both happened to see the same asteroid you wanted to build a mine on.

10. Fly boys (or girls)
Battleships slug it out in the background, but we all know the real excitement is taking place on a smaller scale. Pilot a space fighter, or a mecha of some kind, and having thrilling dogfights in space! Then live to tell the tale and go to a bar to brag about how awesome you are to attractive strangers!

11. Space Pirates
Avast me hearties! Shiver me timbers and draw up the solar sail. Fly the skull and crossbones! Grab your blasters and put on your space suits! I've got an Earthling freighter right in me sights that's just BEGGING for us to become closer acquainted!

[AU honestly doesn't need to change much. Just replace "post-apocalyptic fantasy" with "space opera" and change Torumekia to a space empire that controls a few star systems and you're more or less good to go.]

When she entered the room, just about every male (and indeed a number of the female) voice died away in awe. She had a textbook perfect figure, the kind of mathematically perfect face you see under "beauty" in the dictionary, a waterfall of black hair with gems woven into it and a dress that probably cost more than a small starship. It was just a pity she was already on someone's arm.

She was also across the room from Katsuragi and Kadam, a tall, skinny Indian woman in her fifties with an eyepatch and a military uniform. Kadam looked over at the radiant beauty who had just entered and muttered something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like "My god. If I was twenty years younger I'd be on that like yellow on cheese..." with undisguised admiration in her voice.

(Star Trek AUing it up: Captain Scott Summers is the latest in a long line of Starfleet officers, even if he and his brother were orphaned when Scott was nine. The incident left Scott brain damaged and almost completely blind, but thanks to twenty-fourth-century technology -- a brain implant and the kind of VISOR also worn by Geordi La Forge on the Enterprise D -- Scott hasn't been slowed down very much. If anything his disability makes him more determined to succeed in life. He's currently the captain of the USS Lockheed.

Sometimes the best plans came from the oddest of circumstances. Not that Jadzia would consider their morning sex to be odd, but they had come up with something all their own during that morning jaunt. It had taken a little bit of a time and some bribing from Quark, but Jadzia had programmed a replica of that first meeting together, right down to the last detail. He'd be along shortly, Jadzia knew, and brushing the wrinkles out of her uniform, she entered, taking the same seat that she had had all those months ago. Yet, unlike last time where there had been a mild interest in the Captain sitting close to her, this time she knew what she was getting.
