[ So here's where a week of planning, a day of fighting, and months of recovery get a man like Faraday: Somewhere in the mountains, seeking refuge in an abandoned cabin, freezing his goddamn fingers off.

Living through that hellish battle should've been more rewarding than this, Faraday thinks bitterly.

Emma Cullen's little mercenary army survived, despite every lick of sense that told Faraday such a thing should be impossible. Still, they didn't escape from Rose Creek unscathed. They rest and heal, and when they're well enough, they all set out together, reluctant to break apart a team forged in fire.

Currently, the seven of them have split up, hot on the trail of some man wanted in several states, sitting pretty with a $500 bounty on his head. (Faraday had grinned at Vasquez, asked him, "Old friend of yours?" and earned a kick in the ankle for his troubles.) Chisolm, bless his heart, must've drawn the short straw, considering he ends up with Faraday as his partner.

The weather had been steady for most of their trek into the mountains. As they climbed higher, the gales kicked up, and the snow fell more heavily, forcing them to seek shelter. It's only by chance they find the old cabin, weather-worn but mostly intact. Chisolm sets about starting the fire in the old hearth, while Faraday has the unenviable task of making their horses comfortable – or as comfortable as possible, given the weather.

Faraday kicks the door shut behind him as he reenters the cabin, stamping snow from his boots and chafing his hands together, coaxing life back into them. He scowls at Chisolm, snow still clinging to his shoulders and hair, his cheeks reddened from the cold. ]

Just so we're both aware, I refuse to step outta this room till the sun's back out.

It's freezin'.
