The "Adopted" Sibling or Child Meme


They say blood is thicker than water. Family is everything. But what about the family you choose, the ones that aren't necessarily bound to you by shared blood? Sometimes, they can be closer than anyone you're just related to through chance. You chose them, after all!

This person in particular is someone you're closer to than almost anyone; it's more than friendship, it's darn near familiar. No, more than darn near, it is familial. They may be younger than you, maybe even by a considerable margin, but they may not be. They could just seem that way, in their innocence or vulnerability. You want to protect them more than anything, keep them close, and spend time with them so their life can be improved by whatever you can do.

Officially or unofficially, you've adopted them as your own. Your family, with you as an older sibling or parent figure. This could make things better for them...or worse.

(He made it so. There's only one of them left, there was only one of them left very early on. He still ignores it, hears his twin in the wind and the storm, in the whisper of the leaves in a nightly forest, in the murmur of running water and the laughter of children.

Of this child. At first, he'd thought that by some strange twist of fate his twin had been returned to him, but... no. He had not.)

When he found the little girl a few years back, her hair the fire of his family and nobody left to care for her, he couldn't not take her with him, feed and protect her and... There is little else that he can offer, there's been little else that he could offer for a very long time. He'll have to drop her off with one of the few Elven communities left in Middle-earth sooner rather than later. But for now...

For now he tries to do his best and be a good foster parent to her. He's never experienced this before.]

[Neither the worst nor the best, but he's a hunter, one of the best there ever were on this continent. He knows how to handle furs and leathers and all other aftereffects of a hunt.]

(Ever since he found her, the little girl had grown attached to her new protector. When he found her, alone in the woods, family dead and with no one else in the world for her to turn to, she had naturally been drawn to the offer of protection and shelter, even if it came from a complete stranger. She had managed on her own for a while, but she was not a foolish child. She knew she could not last alone in the forest forever, not with the cold winds of winter becoming increasingly bitter by the day. And so, when he appeared, offering her food and a warm fire to sit beside, she had immediately accepted without question. From that day on, she followed him, learned from him, and did everything she could to make herself useful to him. Hoping that perhaps he would decide not to leave her behind somewhere.

So far, she had proved herself to be an eager student. A Wood-elf, she was naturally light on her feet, and had already learned some basic tracking and hunting skills before. Now, she was quick to learn from him, observing everything he did, and copying those skills as best she could.)

(When he presented her with the new tunic, her eyes lit up, as if he were presenting her with a fine gift of silks and jewels, rather than a simple tunic to replace the one she had worn out.)

(It was a silly question, she supposed. It was, after all, far to small for anyone else! Still, she looked surprised and gave him a bright and sweet smile.)
