The boat's been out in the water for a few days in a row now. Whoever's in it isn't fishing, and they're not swimming. Nisere doesn't think much of it, until one of his pod comes back, talking about the ship. He's a rather flighty thing, pink like sea coral, but he doesn't lie. Usually, anyways.

Still, he arches his back and shows off the spot on his back next to his dorsal fin - there's a little spot of dark, and Nisere can feel a bump under the hide when he presses with his finger.

Still, he's not hurt and has only a story to tell, so Nisere tells his pod to avoid the boat.

Of course, that doesn't mean that Nisere has to avoid the boat. It's still sitting in the water in the same place, even though the humans on board had taken and returned one of his pod, so Nisere approaches.

He looks thoroughly out of place against the shallow, light-colored sand. He's long and sleek and dark - nearly twice as long as any of his podmates, and he's sure if he stretches his arms above his head he would be as long as the boat is itself.... or maybe even longer.

Nisere is dark and trailing with fins - inky indigo hide covers his back and tail and the back of his neck - only his belly and face are light. If it were dark, luminescent spots would be lit up along his dorsal ridge, flashing 'I am a Prince' to any Queens and letting his own know where he was in the dark depths of the ocean.

His hair is twisted up into a knot on his head, held in place with a bright piece of silk - seafoam green and cobalt blue. He's both incredibly beautiful and incredibly dangerous - the process that took a male from a simple male to a Prince meant he was smarter, stronger, faster, and more stunning than a normal Mer male.

Nisere lets out a trilling note, runs webbed fingers up the length of cord holding the anchor to the sandy bottom, then heads to the side of the boat, sticking his head above water. He calls out another note - sings, in the way that can only be done above water - then rolls onto his back, flicking his tail to send a huge spray of water over the side of the boat.

Most humans aren't dangerous. They can be annoying, yes, but there are no nets he can see from the water, and no hooks in the water.

Andy stays close, ready to catch Techie if the recoil knocks the younger boy back again. He's trying to teach him how to shoot. The firearm's just an old school pistol, nothing fancy like the Judges or anyone with a little bit of credit to throw around has, but if the kid can master the basics with it, he ought to be able to handle something better. And mastering the basics is something the little guy needs to learn yesterday, because he's small and useful and that's always a combination bound for trouble.

A part of him is still wondering why he's helping this kid, this criminal (that he's a refugee from Ma-Ma's dismantled clan isn't exactly a big secret) who won't even give him a name. But the rest of him knows. Even if he's a cadet now, in training to become an auxiliary judge, there was a time when he was small and alone too.

"Don't tense up too much. You want to focus on the target, not the recoil." He points over Techie's shoulder to the can lined up some 20 yards away. "Don't worry about the recoil. I'll catch you if you need catching."

New York City in winter is utterly stupid, Newt decides. What an absolutely pointless concept. Not only because he accidentally tripped into a snowdrift almost three feet deep immediately upon arrival but because somewhere so indecently cold should at least have some interesting creatures living there to make up for it. At least Siberia had the decency of having qiqirn.

Contrary though it might seem and despite growing up in a rather rainy part of England, Newt isn't much of a fan of miserable weather. It's probably why he spends a little more time in Africa than perhaps is, as his publisher puts it, "entirely necessary". In short, he hates the cold. No matter how much he charms his clothes to maintain their warmth, the spell never seems to last long enough, as though his magic itself were affected by the climate, the cold leaking slowly back into him until his teeth start chattering in his head.

Of course, the only thing more stupid than the weather in New York are its streets. Despite apparating as near to the Goldsteins' apartment building as he could manage (which wasn't at all near enough) Newt still ends up walking a full circle of their block before he eventually happens upon their front door.

"Oh, thank Merlin," he sighs to himself when he spots it, setting his suitcase down by his feet as he blows warm air into his numbed hands. "Finally."
