[Nobody understands why Yuri is so excited about international competitions these days - and not only about the chance of winning, either. It's so often the same group of skaters you meet throughout the season, though, especially now that he's joined the senior competition at a really young age. He has his reasons for doing that; he has his reasons for wanting to win. But the silver lining to the gold that he's aiming for is Petra.

He doesn't understand himself what that weird feeling in his stomach is. It's like he caught some kind of bug, except it feels good, and while his concentration off the ice can suffer for a day or two before he knows he'll see her again, he's still doing as well as ever while skating. Maybe even just a little better, depending on the routine. So it can't be a bad thing, can it?

Still, it's hard to be sure it's a good thing when he runs over the moment he sees Petra, a soft but incredibly stupid smile on his lips, and the rest of his team just look at each other, flabbergasted.]

[ Petra had always liked competitions, not for the same reasons Levi did but for all the chances to meet new people and places, of course there were certain people she was moe excited and eager to see. Though this new season, well, it hadn't precisely kicked off to a good start, not performance wise...they were still as good as always, but more like behind scenes.

A small sigh escaped her lips when she heard Levi and Erwin ( their always faithful and demanding coach ) fighting again, she had to be thankful they were not being loud about it, but people probably noticed and well she wasn't sure she could blame Erwin since her partner, at twenty six, had dropped the "retiring" bomb on them.

The sudden call of her name had them stopping and she couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face when she saw who it was, Yuri was one of those people she was always glad to see...maybe a bit more than she should, she turned to glare at Levi when 'he called him 'an annoying brat' before turning once again to smile brightly at the younger skater. ]

Good, I guess... The usual.

[She might not know what "the usual" entailed at all - he was used to keeping his personal affairs to himself, not really knowing what to talk to her about - but it wasn't as if anything was wrong, so it was a good enough answer.

And one that would usually be followed by asking the same in return, but Yuri's thoughts were elsewhere. The urge to say something, to share something, to maybe brag a little was overwhelming. He had to make a connection, and he didn't really know how else to do it.]

I got a new short routine! It's really good, I'll definitely win with it.

( as if she needed more reason to tease him...but can't blame her, looks fun to tease him. )

[ There was a slight hum in acceptance of his answer and while social protocol usually demanded for the same to be asked of her, she didn't took much offense when he didn't...after all, social protocol also hinted that someone her age maybe shouldn't be as, well, peculiarly interested in someone as young as him.

But then again, it wasn't in a creepy way or anything, no of course not, it was strictly professional and mentor'ish way. Yet sometimes, some small times some lines got blurred when he sounded and looked so excited as he did in that moment...lord it was kind of unfair. ]

[Yuri had been quite happy to ignore Levi's very existence, thank you very much. The guy rubbed him the wrong way, and Yuri knew for sure that Levi didn't appreciate Petra nearly as much as he should, either as a skater or as a person, or even for something like how pretty she was... or how nice. Not that Yuri even knew her all that well, all things considered, but he still knew her. He was convinced he had a better understanding of her than the likes of Levi ever could.

Glaring violently at the guy, Yuri was kept from asking what was so funny only by Petra inviting him along - which was for the best, no doubt. Emphatically taking up position next to Petra, Yuri was more than happy to walk along. He could ignore Levi and Erwin's existence a little longer: they could just trail behind or whatever.]

Sure. It's not really a surprise... though Yakov wants the music kept secret until he talks to the press tomorrow, so I guess that much can still be a surprise for you.

[And he continued by detailing the jumps he was planning, pushing his own boundaries as always. He had to aim high if he wanted to win - and, as good as he knew he was, that was something he'd never forget.]

[ Having noticed the rather heated and angry glares between Yuri and Levi, she decided to let him and Erwin go ahead of them -she wasn't sure she could deal with Erwin's knowing stare, besides her trainer had more important things to deal with, like Levi and finally announcing to the press their theme for the season.

Still it didn't distracted her from hearing all the details about Yuri's upcoming program, and as expected it was going to be a difficult one but then, Yuri had always been the kind of skater to still work hard to go over what was expected. ]

It sounds like you're going to have quite an impressive debut on your senior level, you must be quite excited. I still remember how I felt when I was about to make my senior debut.

[ She had been so nervous, she was after all sixteen and making her debut with Levi as her partner. With a small smile she lightly touched his arm. ]

I will do my best to not miss it and be there to cheer you on.

[With the irritation brought on by the ~~other~~ men in Petra's life, Yuri, while still excited, wasn't as hopelessly lost in barely-understood feelings as before. He was just himself, if a little happier and less frustrated than usual.

Until she touched his arm, and his stomach started doing somersaults. It was hardly uncommon for skaters to watch each other - they were always in the same general area, if sometimes busy with their own warm-up and the like - but something about Petra wanting to be there to cheer him on made Yuri feels absolutely wonderful... if a little nauseous.]

Can I come watch you, too? [Stupid question. Stupid, stupid question - yet that barely registered, even now that he'd asked it. He needed this now: he desperately wanted her to be there, and he wanted to be there for her performance just as much. Maybe she couldn't really stop him from watching her, but... he wanted her to know, for some reason, that he would be there. He wanted her to want him there.] I really want to watch you perform!

[ It was the comment more than the question that startled her a bit, also lord almighty she was sure she was probably blushing a bit, it's just that he sounded so vehement and determined to see her (and clearly just her because Yuri clearly didn't care about Levi) and knowing that shouldn't have brought the kind of reactions it did. Sure, it was quite flattering, it was always nice when another talented skater took the time to watch and appreciate what you're doing on the ice, but in this case it was more than that.

Of course, Petra wasn't that blind as to not know that the younger skater was, as Erwin pointed out, 'crushing on her' or something close to it and usually that wouldn't be an issue, she had dealt with that before...the issue here was that, well, she wasn't that indifferent to it and she really shouldn't be feeling just a tad nervous (a weird kind of fluttering she hadn't felt, well, since those first years with Levi) at the prospect of the other skater being there, it was also a tad bittersweet in a sense as well.

Slowly she took her hand back and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. ] I will be really happy if you could be there as well, Yuri, after all these particular performances will also be quite special and knowing you will be there will make it even more so.

[At her response (or was it because of the break in contact?) Yuri got the odd sensation that he was floating away, and it was a surprise to find his legs were moving as usual, somehow still touching ground. She really wanted him to be there... He would do anything he could to make it happen. He couldn't risk being late for his own performance, but that was it: anything else could get stuffed.]

[It wasn't a fair comment at all, but then, being fair wasn't Yuri's goal. He was voicing an opinion that had nothing to do with the facts. Levi didn't deserve Petra. Not by a long shot.]

If I could do pairs, I'd do a much better job.

[But he couldn't - and for now, he wasn't really trying to. He didn't care about skating in pairs unless he could do so with Petra, and he had to focus on his solo career, not to mention that his body couldn't handle the lifts as it was. Maybe someday. Not now; not yet.

That didn't mean he couldn't still be annoyed that Levi could do what Yuri could not.]

[ By now, she was more than used to the rather 'harsh' comments aimed at her partner, she was after all the more charismatic and presentable of the two and Erwin had always sold them that way. Instead she decided to cling to the most flattering ( and thoughtful ) comment about her skating, it always made her glad that people enjoyed what she did, and the mild surprise at, was it a small hint, of him being interested in pair skating.

It have never looked to Petra as if he was interested ( much less was going to be allowed ) to change of disciplines, he looked more than comfortable with solo skating, in a sense she could understand she had started as a solo before changing, she was about to say something when she was beat to it. ]

Oh so much confidence from a boy that wouldn't even be able to lift a girl off the ice. [ Her partner stopped and turned to glare darkly at the younger skater, prompting her to inch closer to him, a warning he hoped Levi might get, but clearly didn't. ] I will tell you to catch up brat, to prove your worth, but seeing as I will be retiring, moot point.

[ Petra gaped a bit at him and Erwin just got that look of 'I will kill him', before Levi started to walk again promptly followed by a pissed off Erwin, leaving her nearly shoulder to shoulder with Yuri and seeing her skating career flash before her eyes, it was the first time he actually said it in public and that only made it even more real, and GOD she hadn't wanted people to know yet...she hadn't mentally prepared...oh this was probably going to be one of the last times she was going to see ~~Yuri~~ most of her acquaintances again. ]

Petra! Come!

[ She flinched a bit and turned to look at Yuri. ] I am sorry about him, you know jet lag, maybe we can go out later. [ She started to search in her bag, before getting a small notepad with a pen, scribbling down her number and giving to him, not really putting much thought on whether it was proper or not, she just wanted to have it. ] Call me okay, I will see you later.

Retiring?!

[That single, simple word did the impossible: it made all ~~butthurt~~ anger fade from Yuri's mind, replaced by a wide collection of complicated feelings. Concern for Petra; an intense sense of loss that didn't even make sense at present. He couldn't accept it: she had to keep skating, and Yuri had to keep seeing her, somehow. But Levi was right, and Yuri couldn't even deny it: Yuri couldn't replace him. He simply couldn't. In a few years, maybe - but by then it would probably be too late.]

[Accepting the piece of paper with his mouth still agape, Yuri couldn't find the right words to say. He couldn't sort out his own feelings, let alone offer any reassurance. This wasn't okay. It would never be okay.

In the end, he simply stood there, lamely watching her leave.

Training was a mess, after that. He couldn't keep his mind with his routine at all, so he did some other exercises to at least keep his body well-oiled - and got scolded for overdoing it at a time when he couldn't afford to train to exhaustion. Like it was his fault, any of it! How could he be expected to be less than upset?

Having showered at last, he was starving, but even food was too much to think about. He had to call Petra to talk about it all and he knew it, but it still took a lot out of him to actually do so. He didn't know what to say. He was afraid, somehow: afraid that whatever conversation they ended up having could only come out sounding like goodbye, already. Eventually, he decided to text her.]

If you're still awake, we can eat together. I'll be in the hotel lobby in 15.

[Smooth.]

[ Being stuck nearly the rest of the day with a pissed off Erwin and Levi wasn't never a good thing, they had a training scheduled, but due to Levi's sudden and public announcement Erwin decided it was better for them to remain in their rooms, which pissed her off a bit ( despite their claims that they didn't really needed it ) and she was just furious at Levi and he knew it. While they already knew Levi had decided to retire, they had agreed on when and how to say it, there had been a plan, a PR plan to make it less of a mess and smooth for everyone and Levi had to go and ruin it.

New plans had to be made and new contingencies had to be carefully planned, when Erwin had finally left them to go call Mike on how handle things, Petra had gone to her own room and refused to talk with her partner at the moment. For the first time, since that first year she had been training with him before their debut, she had cried and it had been just a mix of different emotions...anger, sadness, regret, some relief...she wasn't even sure now, but it's just that she had really thought she had more time, that he was going to at least allow her to come to terms with it.

She wasn't sure how long she laid on her bed when the chime of her phone startled her a bit. Granted it took her a bit to realize who was texting her and it brought a small little smile to her face. ]

still awake, and sure will see you there.

[ With a sigh she got off the bed and quickly tried to make herself as presentable as she could, it wasn't a date (nope) but she couldn't just appear looking, well, as if a truck had run her over. Grabbing just the necessary things, she left her room and hell, if Erwin or Levi needed her they could deal for the time being.

She needed to be away from the for a moment and spending time with Yuri (despite circumstances) was never a bad thing. She arrived to the (thankfully kind of deserted) lobby before he did and had no trouble waiting for him. ]

[Busy drying his hair, he didn't see her reply until a few minutes later, and even though it was the answer he'd been hoping for, it made him absurdly nervous. He'd convinced himself, somehow, that he didn't need a reply; that he'd just go to the lobby and see if she was there or not. With jet lags and such, it wouldn't be strange if she was already sleeping.

But she sent a reply, and butterflies in his stomach were making him nauseous. All his clothes were awesome, of course, but he spent a little more time than usual picking something out, and ended up just barely making the time he'd told her to meet him, finding her already there.]

... Did I keep you waiting?

[What a pointless and weak thing to say. But saying anything at all was hard when the conversation would have to hit that land mine of retirement sooner or later. He didn't want that to happen just yet... but he didn't want to drag it out, either.

With a sigh, he grabbed her lightly by the wrist - a bold move that surprised even himself a little - and started walking. It would be better if they were sitting somewhere. If he started talking about Levi's retirement before then, he might say something stupid, and they might never make it to dinner. He had to control himself.]

Hmm, no, you didn't.

[ And now she wasn't totally sure what to say, there was clearly the elephant in the room and she didn't felt like broaching that subject just yet, she had been fighting about it most of the day and she wasn't looking forward to pick it up just yet.

She was a bit surprised when he took a hold of her wrist, not due to the action, but mostly because she was rather aware of the contact and mutely followed after him, since it felt as if he already knew where he wanted them to go.

They had been walking for awhile and she had felt her phone vibrating like five times already, but ignored it for the time being, whatever was going on here with them was her priority and the other two men in her life could wait. ]

Yuri, where are we going?

There's a restaurant just down the street. It's supposed to be good.

[Calling it "restaurant" was being generous, but it served decent food and offered a place to sit, anyway. At least, that was what the reviews said. Yuri hadn't looked into it much: he had other priorities.

Like avoiding looking at Petra, apparently. It was frustrating, knowing he needed to talk about it yet being unable to talk about it. One thing at a time. He wanted to get them seated first.

So he walked her to the restaurant, got them a table - and the very moment they sat down, raised the topic after all. He'd long since run out of any tact he might have summoned, looking at her with a seriousness bordering on sternness.]

What was that about retirement?

[ And that was pretty vague, but she decided not to question it as the mood was quite odd between them already and was rather quiet while he lead her to wherever he had picked. Instead she took a deep breath and tried to piece together what she was going to tell him, she was under no illusion that he wasn't going to ask about the issue Levi had brought into light and she had to think of a rational way to explain it.

Not that she owed anyone an explanation, retirement was something that happened in the sport after all, and Levi was in the normal age range when most professional skaters considered and have done so, but she was only twenty-one and the situation was just complicated.

Petra blinked a bit startled at the question, she hadn't noticed when they reached the restaurant much less when they took a seat and now being face with the question, she had forgotten the argument she had prepared. She sighed a bit and tried not to pay more attention to his expression, it's not as if it was totally her fault. ]

It's just how it is, when last season ended he said this coming season was going to be his last. Erwin didn't quite believe it, I guess part of me didn't wanted to believe it, but I know Levi better in certain aspects and knew he was being serious. [ Another small sigh escaped her lips. ] Erwin just finally accepted it when Levi, was well doing the right preparations, he has failed to convince Levi and instead planned the right PR to make the official announcement.
