Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a conscientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be. The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapiens. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed. Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human. So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know? As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo! All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best. However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to. According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right. Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child. It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant. Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet. These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders. Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions. Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends. Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans. Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies. So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon. Rules Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth). REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate! Comment to others. Play out the scene.

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction. First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks? True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life. Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden. Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other. Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on? Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference. Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic. For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public. Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match? Servant: You're more servant than pet. All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house. Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything. Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing. Breaking In: Training is important with any pet. In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel! Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie! Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year. Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others. Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids. Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out! Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show? Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets. Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try! Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom. Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills... Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache. Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them! Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs. Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

On the other side of the coin, she is a cat with a sleek blue tail and matching ears, yet instead of being aloof, she goes against type and is kind of a giant goof and troublemaker. )

( As an owner, Yukina is sympathetic and patient, tending to take in strays and tough cases. While her eyes aren't set on any sort of rebellion, she has an open mind and ear towards pets who have had it with society's caste system; as such, she's likely to take in strays and protect Frees. However, she's just as likely have a True Bond who she trusts utterly and completely. It could do her well to have a guardian. For types, she tends to gravitate towards birds, canines, and felines.

Pet-wise, she'd be a either a straight up demon as in canon or a bird type with tiny, tiny wings. They're tiny and she keeps them neat, like everything else around her. She is quiet and doesn't take up much room, and is well suited for a servant, companion, or therapeutic pet because of her subdued nature and care for other living beings. )

( As an owner, he's a dedicated and loving one, even if he's a bleeding heart sympathizer for the Pet People's Rights movement. If he has his own choosing, he'll go for a dog type.

As a pet, he's of an old breeding stock well-known for their guard dog skills ("saving people, hunting things, the family business"). His ears and tail are a German Shepherd's, and he has two sharp canines. Either he's a rebellious pet who thinks that animal people should have the same rights as humans OR he's a dedicated guardian, 1000% loyal to his master.

He's sometimes aloof, often condescending, and a bit of a shittalker at times, although his cool head and intelligence can't be denied. Long time or observant pets might even note his softer (if awkward) moments, or lack of certainty in some areas.]

Highly intelligent, simultaneously bold but sensitive, they require constant attention, lots of space, and to be kept away from anything that's easy for them to destroy. [Strictly speaking, Kit wasn't a 'pet person'... but she and other Kitsunes tended to get lumped in with them anyways and it pissed her off. She'd been picked up as a 'stray' and dumped in a shelter for unwanted pets when her human illusion failed on her one of her rare trips into the city.

Of course now she was under 24 hour scrutiny and couldn't slip away to change back to her fox form to escape... Being stuck in a human form with only one leg sucked. At least in her fox form she could run on three legs.

Her ears were flat against her head and her multiple tails were twitching in irritation as she sat on a chair in her 'cage'. She had refused to speak to anyone so far and had been labeled as 'exotic but damaged', as they thought she was mute along with missing her right leg just above the knee.]

[And that’s how he’s found himself here: striding through a pound with his shoulders firmly up, not afraid to broadcast his feelings in this particular case. Oh, he’s heard all the advertisements, the shows about pet devotion, seen books up for sale that go on and on about the virtues of owning a pet… But so shoot him. It’s creepy to him, the way they look so alike to humans. Something about it rankles him. Oh, they’re sentient and talk and make great companions, but not so sentient that it’s a moral issue! He’s been practicing fake smiles and sugary tones since he was a child; Kei recognizes similar bullshit when it’s being fed to him.]

[Still. It’s not like he’s been one to do anything about it, just trying to stay to himself up until this point. Fat load of good that’s done for him, and he glances apathetically through the cages for the bare minimum of ‘giving a look’. He only slows to a stop as he comes upon a… fox? [Kit didn't look at him until he spoke, and even when she did, she seemed less than impressed with him. Still, she doesn't really react other than to let out a hiss like huff sounding noise. It's not really aggressive sounding, but by the look on her face before she turns away it's more of an annoyed 'so you're here to laugh at the cripple too' type of frustration.]

Oh, her. I'd recommend another for a first time owner. A disabled pet is not easy to care for, and this one in particular, is a mute with an attitude problem.

[While she wasn't mad at him for coming to look at her, as he could be her ticket out of this prison, she was beyond pissed at the shelter worker... and it shows. Kit bared her teeth at the worker and hissed with a look of pure hate on her face. She didn't think that every worker was totally bad here, even somewhat liking the one that would sneak her bits of fried chicken rather than feeding her 'shelter kibble'... but this one, she'd like a chance to put a few claw marks in his hide.]

We strongly recommend de-clawing if you do want this one. She's been clawing up the furniture here and making holes in the walls. Perhaps even a muzzle until you can train her to behave, she bites.

[And that should be a huge hint as to why she doesn't like this worker. She wanted out of this hell hole. Kit was already down a limb and they wanted to remove her claws too? Fuck no. Hadn't she lost enough already? Sure, she was pretending to be mute and 'dumb' when it came to reading, but the way people treated her when they figured she couldn't tell anyone what was going on... Nope. She was done with this shit. If it weren't for the fact she couldn't escape without shifting and screwing over her entire species, she would have bolted ages ago.]

( Most pets would dream of having an owner like Ariel; she's kind, fun-loving, and doting. Not to mention, as the baby daughter of a shipping tycoon, she's extremely wealthy and not overly attached to said money. No expenses are spared. The down side, of course, is that she often finds herself in trouble because of her curiousity, and she's known for wearing her heart on her sleeve.

As a pet, Ariel is either a -

a. Jack Russel terrier, energetic and affection but almost a constant source of potential danger and prone to get into everything.
b. Fish girl. Instead of ears, she has fanned gills. Her fingers and toes are webbed, and in some light, her skin seems to have shimmering scales in patches. She cannot be out of the water for more than thirty minutes, something she's morose about...or as morose as Ariel can be.

[Reaper honestly hadn't been expecting to end up with another owner so soon. His last one had called him an incorrigible rascal and had dumped him at a shelter after only a few weeks, complaining of his energy levels and neediness. He was well past the cute puppy stage. Not many wanted a dog in his prime who already had all his bad habits in place. Plus, black dog types were considered unlucky by some.

Then the shelter volunteers had been doing a showcase of some of the dogs. Ariel had walked by with a few of her sisters. Immediately, she had stopped to look at him, exclaiming how sad it was when a volunteer explained how black dogs were hard to adpot. Reaper had tried to make a good impression. It must have worked. He'd been extremely grateful when the girl had picked him over the younger, cuter dogs on display.

What he hadn't been expecting was to end up living with a girl who lived in a bona fide mansion. He just kept staring at his surroundings, wondering if this was just a wonderful dream he was having. His tail kept incessantly wagging and he struggled to keep from running from room to room.]

( Owner-Usagi is exactly how she is in canon with Luna, so warm but easily distracted. Not to mention the fact that she'll openly quarrel with her pets if they try to give her good advice. Without a doubt she's a bit of an airhead, yet she means only the best. With her True Match, nothing will stop her from taking care of the pet she loves - she's also very likely to be involved with a romance she's not supposed to be into.

Pet-Usagi is, what else, a bunny girl. She loves attention and demands all of her master's, giving just as much back. Jealousy is a likelihood, as well as falling for her master. When you get down to it, though, there's no pet more loyal...except when she's being lazy or hungry. )

as a pet he'll either be a bat who's only active at night, a guard dog (more specifically a german shepard), or a lazy cat who is surprisingly protective of his master. likes being pampered and having his owner play with his hair, loyal, probably teases without really realizing it. )

as a pet he's a white fox or cat with a very pronounced streak of curiosity. he will houdini himself anywhere you don't want him to be and will get pretty apathetic about his master/their commands if not given a reason to listen. when his trust is earned he is very loyal and caring, not leaving their side. ]

As a pet, he's got the black ears and tail of a Belgian Malinois. He's enthusiastic and full of energy to the point of already having burnt out a few owners. He'll probably require someone with a lot of attention to spare for him. In return, his owner will have a very loyal, loving companion.]
