THE RESPAWN MEME

For when death is not the end.

So you've died. Be it by accident, violence, your own hand or maybe you just ran out of time. There's no reason that has to be the end of your story. In fact- it isn't. An minute, an hour, a day after you die? You're right back in the game. Round two, coming at ya. Then round three.  Round four. Round fifty.

 

Here's how it is:
1) Post with your character and their name, canon, preferences in the subject line. 
2) Roll for an environment and respawn number, or pick as you please!
3) Write up a blurb to set the scene. Be as concise or as elaborate as you like or leave it open for others to tag in with their own scene!

And/Or

3) Roll for others and tag in.

 
Environment

1 - War Games. Maybe you're black ops. Maybe you're a soldier in the trenches. Maybe you're a random guy in the middle of the conflict just trying to get home.   Either way war is hell, and hell is here.  Civilian or solider, spy or general, you're stuck in the fight and hey, sometimes there are casualties. Today that's you. 

2 - Not so final fantasy. A world of magic and mystery. Dungeons to crawl, castles to crack into, treasures to purloin. You're a fighter, a thief, a barbarian, a guard.  Maybe you don't belong here at all. Maybe it was some cosmic mistake and now you're stuck in a quest without a sword to your name.  Get used to those revive spells. They'll be happening a lot.

3 - Spaaace! Welcome to the future, my friend. Or the present, just up very, very high. Or a long long time ago far far away.  Lots of things can go wrong in space. Lots of things go wrong in the future. Not every space station or colony is OSHA compliant.  Horror or Heroism, pitch black or brightly lit and neon, In space, no one can hear you scream. But everyone can hear you respawn.

4 - Cat and Mouse, East or West. Cartoon physics can be fun. You go flat when you fall, bounce off of walls without a broken bone.  But sometimes an anvil hits too hard or a hammer comes swinging and you just can't duck. Maybe you got dumped into a random fighting tournament.  An epic journey. The last pilot of this gigantic robot, the chosen one, the last hope of a dying world.  This might be a life you know and know well, you might be the guy that's only ever seen this on TV.  Better sort out what works, and what doesn't. Fast.

5 - Real life.  Everyone dies. It's part of how life works.  It's just how things go. But for some reason that's just not sticking. Be it an office accident, a traffic accident, a random shooting, a jump off a bridge- it didn't stick. You wake up in your bed and have to deal with the fact that not only did you not die? It's considered normal now. Good luck with that.

6 - Movie Madness. Post apocalyptic, midnight with the vampires, every horror movie you've ever seen. Slasher flick, alien invasion, zombies everywhere, you're dropped in a place with the odds stacked against you in the worst way and it's something straight out of the cinema.  The good news is you'll have plenty of time to think up witty one liners  before you die. Make sure you have plenty.

7 - Wild Card. Anywhere. Everywhere. Anytime, any place, make up your own. Go wild!


 Respawn number

1 -  Baby's First Respawn. It's your first time dying and coming back- and you don't know what's going on or why it's happening. But you're back and it's time to learn from whatever happened before to keep it from happening again. Or you could ignore it. Call it a bad dream. Yeah...

2- Round Three. Okay, so it's not a dream. You're very sure you died, and you're very sure you're alive again.  Is it time to freak out? Abuse this? Drink and pray it all goes away? Or do you keep on doing what you need to do?

3 - Round Ten.  You've been at this awhile now.  Keep coming back, keep making the same mistake, or a new mistake, and keep ending up dead.  Do you press on? Do you hole up somewhere and take a break? Or do you start to wonder if there will ever be an end?

4 - Round Fifty. It's old hat now.  The Respawn is less of a shock and more of a tool. Stuck? Die, start again later.  Too hurt to fix? Die. Start fresh and healthy. Lost? Die. Start at home base, your apartment, wherever you began the last time. It's old hat. And maybe you're getting tired of it now.

5 - Last Spawn. You figured it out. Solved the puzzle, won the fight, or escaped whatever it was that caused the endless loop of living and dying. You're free.  But can you trust it? Can you be sure? Can you keep living your normal life after taking the fact you'll come right back for granted for so long?

6 - Wild Card. Life number ??? Utterly random. Whatever you want it to be!

Not so Final Fantasy
[ How many times have you approached the evil sorcerer? No one knows. Death tends to do that to you. You lose the sense of time and space while you lay on the marble steps leading to the sorcerer's layer. Maybe you were revived with a vile tasting potion that left you sickly and pale, maybe with magic that still thrums through you like a shot of adrenaline.

Charles hasn't died. He's exhausted beyond measure, though, his body raw with spell fatigue. He's running out of energy, that much is clear. His healing spells have only half of the power they used to have.

Lets make the last rush at the enemy or something. Now or never? ]

On the sixth day that would end up in his violent death, he already knows. But what can he do about it?

[The body on the steps isn't a guard. Not this far inside the fortress. Not an enemy, probably, it's wearing the wrong uniform. Safest just to shoot, probably, but he hates wasting arrows. Well. If it's a trap, he'll deal with it.]

[If his steps are light enough to get to the steps undetected, his plan is simple: stick out one ragged boot, nudge the body laying there in the general area of the ribs, not gently. If it jumps up to attack him, try to stab it. If it does anything else, grunt at it in a vaguely curious way. He's walked up these steps before and never seen anyone laying here. This part is new.]

[ SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER or at least something along those lines. This is Peter's fifth landing on the base star. He knows already that his squad of other viper pilots are going to die a horrible screaming death all around him. And he will crash and burn to the hangar bay. It's a suicide mission, so this is not surprising at all. They got to get the shields down.

Perhaps you will join him on this crash landing with your fighter jet or you are his co-pilot. Maybe you're supposed to infiltrate the base star and bust their generators.

She made it, for the first time, and stares down at the lifeless body in front of her in almost disbelief.

How many times has she tried this now and was stopped somewhere on the way, discovered, the shields reinforced instead of lowered - all the good stuff that would lead to the inevitable death of the people on the other side who are supposed to shoot the heck out of the overground facilities of this thing. Four.

She didn't count, but it were four rather distinctive deaths.

She made it, she covertly neutralized the two men manning the shield controls. Now she just has to take them down. Peter did say that he'd seen those controls before and should be able to guide her through it, so... She turns her communicator unit on.]

I'm a the controls now. There's two green rows to the right, a red row starting with Gamma 14 and up, and... a few schematics of the buildings, I think.

War Games

[ Save the world, fight aliens, etc, etc. The first time on the ground is fucking terrifying but hey, he makes it! Second drop's easier. Third, fourth, fifth- not terrible. Then the first time he's shot he thinks it's a fluke but, yeah. That was a bullet and damn if the medics aren't good at their jobs, right? Right.

Getting hit when you know you'll pop back up again makes it easier to jump in the way and cover someone. Especially someone that didn't want to be here in the first place. Grenade, bullet, plasma, or just crumpling architecture- York shoulders whoever it is out of the way and takes the hit. He'll be up in like, an hour. Maybe. He'll be fine. ]

[When Jaune had vowed to see this through even if it meant giving his life, he meant it. He just hadn't expected it to mean more than once.

After discovering that he could die, he just didn't stay that way, he ended up becoming much more reckless. Initially, it was to protect his comrades and friends. He'd take a hit without thinking. He could still feel the pain, the terror each time, uncertain if this time would be the last.

The burning had been the worst. He still avoided fire like his life depended on it, pun intended. What Jaune feared more than anything, though, was in a split-second, he might do something reckless, forgetting that not everyone shared his...Semblance? Ability? He didn't know what to call it, but sometimes he could swear he saw autumn leaves and a splash of crimson before opening his eyes. He had already lost enough people. He was so tired of losing everything.

It's over now.

This time, he didn't open his eyes. Not because he couldn't, but because he just didn't feel like it. He didn't know what he wanted to do. He wouldn't call what happened a win, but if it was really over, then what now? He had already begun to feel a bleakness inside him, and he didn't think it was because there were no longer any enemies here left to fight.]
