BAD END MEME Sometimes you want a fix-it AU. You want everyone to live, to be happy, to find love, so on and so forth. You want the bad guy to lose early, for victory and triumph. Those are great things. Those are happy things. But sometimes terrible things happen to good people and you want to get catharsis through making some characters suffer. We understand. We really do. Sometimes no one wins. Sometimes the villain wins. Sometimes even if the heroes win everything is for naught. Sometimes, things just don't end happily. While things for us in real life will carry on and we will triumph victorious and golden no matter what is thrown at us, we need to get our aggression and hurt out in the meantime. Let's ruin some fictional characters' lives. Maybe it'll make you feel better. • Top level your character. Include any details you might think are relevant. Or don't. The state of both sides of the conflict isn't good. Albus had done his best but without being able to find any information or leads in time the Ministry had been able to work through their plan of spiriting away Muggle-born children to raise them in the Magical world, thereby cutting ties with the Non-Magical world entirely. Secrecy laws had been tightened, Obliviators were the new hot commodity, and they were left trying to do the push back. The Potters, the Weasleys, and these days the Malfoys too, all worked toward getting things at least back to normal.

But then people find out. Non-Magical people find out and slip through the cracks and ripples become murmurs become shouts. It's a war. All-out, and what everyone had been afraid of. The Ministry turns to Harry Potter to fix their problems yet again. Problems they've created themselves. The fighting won't stop if they don't work things out. There are to be peace talks. It's ridiculous.

Harry's supposed to go with a Ministry Official entourage and no one else, but Albus stands firm by his side. Or, well, sits at the round table across from Muggle delegates. They've all been checked for weapons before coming inside, anything dangerous (wands included) confiscated and set aside 'for safety purposes.'

Albus is twenty-seven years old as he sits next to Harry. It had been a little strange when he'd moved to a flat in Muggle London and people had looked at him differently for his skin color. But he knows that Wizards have their own prejudices, and those are what got them into this place to begin with. These Muggles are looking at them with disdain because of that and not what they look like. He's their voice, this time.

"We're here," Albus starts, "to first off genuinely apologize for the grievously awful things that have been done to so many families. The Wizards of my father's generation and my own have been working for years to reintegrate our societies peacefully, but there are some contingents of... Our older generations," his eyes skate aside to the Official next to him as he speaks, "that saw fit to do as they pleased and most of us are just as horrified as you are."

A breath. "We're taking steps to properly punish those that have done this, but it doesn't take back what's already been done."

They're not supposed to be here. Regulus isn't supposed to be here. He'd tried to stop it before it started but his... comrades had gone out on the hunt and picked up some likely suspects. People to be made examples of, undesirables, people someone or other don't like. It doesn't matter to them, and especially not to Bellatrix. She's dragged him along for this shit show and he wishes he could leave, could somehow absolve the guilt.

There are only a couple of people today. They're run through quickly until they get to the very last one. The very last one being Remus J. Lupin, held captive with a black eye and bleeding lip and Regulus' heart practically stops. Dumbledore has had him running information for so long but no one knows about it. Everyone thinks he's really turned to this life. Everyone. Regulus had protested once being forced to participate in these sorts of things. Maiming, killing, doing terrible deeds.

"I must remind you that you joined the Death Eaters of your own accord, Mister Black." Dumbledore had said it so mildly, easy as anything. "And now that you've come to me, it's imperative you maintain your cover. You're a Slytherin after all, perhaps it will help to remember that the ends justify the means. You're helping the war effort immensely, but sometimes there's little else to be done for the fact those means make it more difficult to sleep at night."

Now, Regulus is bitter. He hopes that the old man never sleeps again.

Bellatrix is practically crooning - she's gotten bored with the swift dispatches and it's clear she wants to take her time with this one. They have their masks on which is good because Regulus' expression is stricken behind it. Still, Bellatrix thinks nothing of using their names. She doesn't expect Remus to survive the night. "Reggie, didn't you go to school with this one? The mangy half-blood? Perhaps I should give you the honors, cousin."

Regulus doesn't know what to do.

It's been a hell of a night, to put it mildly. They're terrified, being chased by some escaped war criminal driven mad by years with the Dementors who thinks it's still 1998 and believes Albus is his father. They have no wands, no means to protect themselves beyond whatever crude methods they can find out in the woods. Their friends, Albus' brother, have died, Scorpius can't walk without considerable pain, and Al's shoulder isn't in much better shape. Scorpius is sure that Albus carrying him around on his back isn't helping that any, but they don't have much choice. Scorpius can't exactly run, and Albus refuses to just leave him behind.

He's certain he's going to get the both of them killed.

They're hiding out in the shed by the cabin, Scorpius leaning against the wall to keep himself up and trying to remember how to slow his breathing so it's less audible. If he'd just been less of a coward, maybe James wouldn't have-- He barely swallows back a keening, mournful sound.
