There's nothing in this world quite like a true, blue best friend that you can rely on. They've been with you through thick and thin, good and bad. You want to have fun? They're the first person you look for, because they always know how to bring the best out in you. You need a shoulder to cry on? Don't worry, they're already here. You need to bury a body? ...you should probably reconsider your priorities, but you know your best friend will be there with a shovel and a smile. You'd never ruin this friendship for ANYTHING in the world. Something's brewing that may do just that, though. One of you has feelings, has for a long time, and that spells trouble. Unless you keep that to yourself and remain platonic, of course. Repression in this case might be a good thing. Only it's too late. The cat's out of the bag, whether it's by confession or by accident. What to do, what to do? If feelings aren't returned, can you turn down a friend, or will you force something that isn't there just to make them happy? If feelings are returned, will you risk changing the perfect thing you have? Comment with your character, canon, preferences, and which side you may want to play. IE, the one with feelings, etc. Also, mention if you'd like things to be more fluffy or more tragic. Respond to others. Assumed CR and AU it up if need be.

[ A friendship that’s lasted a couple of years isn’t that old in the scheme of things, but Dutch feels like she’s known Steve forever. He’s the one she goes to when she wants to complain about a boyfriend or girlfriend and he’s probably learned a lot about the mechanics of computers just from listening to her yammer on and on about her job as a freelance hacker. In the end, she does a lot more talking than listening and he does a lot more giving than receiving, but somehow they both wind up relatively happy with the way things work out.

When Dutch shows up at Steve’s place with his favorite pizza in one arm and a pint of her favorite ice cream under the other, it spells out a perfectly normal, innocent evening. It’s nothing out of the ordinary for the two of them to eat a meal together and chat about their day. Of course he lets her in and she immediately pops the ice cream into his freezer. She takes a seat on his sofa and sets the pizza on the table in front of them, but instead of smiling and starting to retell the events of her day she looks a little nervous. ]

[ She sighs. It’s unlike her to be unable to find words. Dutch is such a verbose person and speaking comes as easily to her as writing code. Something is clearly going on in her head. As she struggles with her words, she fidgets, crossing her legs and turning the ring on her finger. ]

Can I be utterly frank with you and not have you make a big deal about it?

[ There’s a frown on her face and infinite emotion in her eyes as she looks up at Steve. It gives the impression that, whatever she means to say, it isn’t good. ]

[Years ago, Shinya had been selected for his capability and his ability to survive.

Tricia had been chosen for the fact that she was delicate, and her poor health would render her entirely dependent on her husband.

All things considered, Cyril Kamelot had been an excellent husband. Handsome, wealthy, and willing to shower her with dresses and a beautiful home and two children—adopted, but connected to him in some way she wasn't aware of back then—so long as she stayed just as he liked: a pretty, sickly wife, waiting at home among flowers and other picturesque settings. Dancing, poetry, etiquette, each one of them became her lifeblood, filling up days that would have otherwise been the very picture of boredom. Those days piled up, becoming years, and her fairytale-esque existence seemed to drift on in a lazy, unstoppable haze.

Not even the end of the world seemed to change it; the charming husband and children turning out to be monsters was something Tricia felt, keenly, that the Grimm brothers would have approved of. But even then, Tricia held her calm, gentle smile; she doted on Road and Wisely, sweetly welcomed Cyril home back from his various—thankfully unexplained—work absences, and passed her time in her large, lavishly gilded cage just the same as she ever had.

Even now, as she blinks down at her husband's cooling corpse, with the manor raided by the first real humans she's seen since her wedding, it's still something she feels would fit into a storybook.]
