the USERNAME meme

Journal names. They're something we all think about, and that we often try to make as fittingly torturous to our characters as possible. Isn't it nice that our characters never have to know they're wandering around with that horrible label attached to them?

...wouldn't it be fun if they did?

RULES

1 Your character is communicating with others through a journal community, just like how we're using them, and they are perfectly aware of that fact. Whether they think that's normal or not is totally up to you.

2 The also know that when they signed on to this community, they were automatically assigned a name that supposedly has something to do with their personality and/or history. They didn't have any say in what that name was going to be, they're just stuck with it.

3 Make a post with your character's reaction to seeing what their own username is. Do they think it fits? Do they hate it with a passion? Are they downright confused?

4 Comment to other people's posts with your character's reactions to everyone else's usernames. If they know the other character, they might have good reason to laugh at them or feel sorry for them. If they don't, this could lead to some pretty interesting first impressions, don't you think?

5 If you want to use a name that's different from your actual journal name, just mark that in your post. No need to create a whole new journal just to make your character's life worse for one meme. ;)

[Kate isn't exactly the type of person who "plays", so the fact that she's doing it now is a huge step. Good on you, Neal, you really do have a touch with the ladies.]

Okay, that was pretty good. I only know one other person who can sell a crazy story that well, and he's a writer. But I just don't think I have it in me.

[She lowers her voice a little, a playful smile on her face.]

Besides, I get all the satisfaction of trembling awe I need when I pull out my badge.

All right, so, I showed you mine. What does yours mean?

Maybe it's my superpower - I find people's lost wallets.

No way. I'm the super hero here, remember? You gotta come up with a different story.

I work for a white collar crime division.

[She stares at him for a moment.]

That actually sounds plausible. I'd almost believe it if I didn't already have an idea of what a good liar you are.

What I don't look like I could pass for a suit?

No offense, but you seem a little too on the free-spirited side to be a Fed.

"Free-spirited." I like it.

So I'm right?

Right about what? Me not being a fed? Sort of. I really do work for them, but I'm a consultant, not an agent.

That's an interesting division to consult in. Do they all dress as well as you?

No - what can I say? I'm really one of a kind.

How'd you end up with that job? And please don't say "I'm actually a fiction writer with too much money and time on my hands."

Can you get a job like this doing that? Because I think I might have gone about this the wrong way.

My partner's a writer. Though to be fair, the city doesn't actually pay him. He gets all the pay he needs by antagonizing me, anyway.

I figure you got into in in a more legitimate way?

Sounds like quite the arrangement.

As for me - well, it's kind of a long story.

Okay, well, I'm a con-man. A forger, actually. Or was, but now I'm a CI, consulting to help catch white collar criminals.

[She stares at him for a minutes.]

Not so much. Personally, I think the superhero angle is a lot better, but you know. Not actually possible. Maybe in my next life, right?

Oh, I don't know. It still might not be too late for this one.

What made you turn it around?

The coffee really isn't that great in prison. It's instant and everything.

But then I got this job consulting with the bureau. They have real coffee, and you know, the dress code is a little more my style.

[Kate cracks a smile. Castle made her into a coffee snob so she can feel his pain.]

I'll give you that. And it's a much more creative answer than "I saw the error of my ways."
