APOCALYPSE MEME The end of the world is here. Are you ready or are you going to kick the bucket? Maybe you've been prepared for the apocalypse for ages or you're blissfully unaware. You can play it straight or for comedy (think Shaun of the Dead), but please be aware that there's likely to be triggering content within! BONUS NOTE: If you spoil The Walking Dead without warnings I will personally come to your house and pour legos into your shoes.

TIMELINE 1. BEGINNING Things have only just begun. Can you get ahead of the problem or are things just going to go to shit? 2. MIDDLE Things HAVE gone to shit. You're right in the middle of things and there's no end in sight. You have to do your best just to get to tomorrow. 3. END Things are finally winding down (or amping up getting ready to wind down). You're in preparations for the final battle, you're killing off the last few zombies, you're living your life. 4. REBUILD/DESPAIR Things are OVER. Either you won or you lost, time to rebuild or go down in your bunker and cry. Hold onto your asses, folks. SCENARIOS 1. MONSTERS/KAIJU Think Godzilla or Pacific Rim. There are monsters, huge ones, and you gotta go through some shit to keep them from killing everything and busting up that last Dunkin Donuts you go to every Thursday with the cute girl working the counter. This is an outrage!! 2. ZOMBIES You know the drill. Whether fast or slow, virus or reanimated, airborne or fluid-borne, biting or eating: your favorite thing, zombies. Remember to aim for the head. 3. ALIENS Visitors from space! ... Except they're killing all of you! Does anyone you know have a cold? Send them to the front lines. 4. WAR Everything's gone to hell. It's going to become a nuclear winter out there if someone doesn't stop the tide of this war. History won't be written by the victors because there won't BE any. 5. "UTOPIA" Everyone is happy, right? Things are so much better now that we don't have any emotions, right? When we started culling populations to keep enough supplies for everyone, right? 6. ROBOTS YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELVES. YIKES. Skynet is a thing, everything is terrible, you're gonna get owned by a Reaper, whatever. Take 'em out, cowboy. 7. DISEASE You're not turning into rabid monsters, but people are dying off at alarming rates. What's causing it? Is there a cure? Is anyone immune? Figure it out, boyo. 8. MISC Anything left over!! Killer tomatoes? World taken over by talking dogs in exoskeletons? Whatever man, we're not the cops. Have fun. As always, these are just suggestions. Make up anything you want, as long as you're having fun!

[ In a lot of settlements, someone like Regulus would have just been killed off when he'd gotten bit. Instead, because he'd brought them a sample of the virus and because he had enough medical knowledge to help, they'd taken off his arm. Some people thought he'd be a burden - and some people might have been.

Regulus is small and quick and clever and knows where and when to look for the medications they so desperately need. He can't go on runs alone with only one arm, but there's no reason for any of them to go anywhere alone, anyway. A lot of times he's stuck with people that protect him grudgingly, but he doesn't hold it against them. Today though, Remus is with him. Remus, who is as good a shot as Regulus used to be before he got bit; Remus, who needs many of these medications the most. It gives a sense of urgency even though he's doing well right now.

They've managed to get into the pharmacy without much incident - a couple quiet kills on the way, close-up rather than using any guns because they didn't want to call attention to themselves. Now that they're inside with the door blocked off (they can get back out quickly enough, they're not stupid) and a cursory sweep done, Regulus slides over the counter so they don't have to jimmy the lock on the door - he opens it from the inside instead, helpfully. ]

I'll go through these for now if you want to grab any other supplies that are out there first.

[ Either way, he'll start digging through the shelves to see what's left. Someone's been here before but they didn't know what they were looking for: there are powdered antibiotics that just need to be reconstituted with water and he shoves them all into the bag slung around him. They're low-dose but better than using heavy-duty drugs on small health issues and running out of those when things were dire. He grabs other things too: pain medications, coagulants, anticoagulants, plenty of things for emergencies. Bandages too, rubbing alcohol, the works. A lot of the obvious things are nearly stripped bare, but there's still enough to bolster them for a while. Then he shifts, beginning to look for some specifics. As he looks, he speaks over his shoulder so Remus can hear him. ]

We need to get you off those steroids. They're helping you short-term, but they're just going to make you worse off in the long-term. If we can get our hands on an antimalarial we can wean you off of the other ones. [ He spots something else while he's looking, though - and lets out a soft barking laugh, obviously pleased. ] Look at that, it's our lucky day.

[The entire point of Jem's long, extended absence from home is that in the end, she was supposed to go back and things would be better. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but things would be slightly less shit than the state she'd left them in. The ideal scenario, at the end of the day, would have been having the circumstances to have a happy ever after if she tried hard enough. Things, of course, do not quite go that way.

For one, she spends more time in paradise city than she ever intended to. She meets people and forges connections she promised herself she wouldn't bother with. And then, at the end, the representatives give her the little beaded bracelet with the means to keep in touch with the people who have long since left and even those who aren't quite ready to. Columbus isn't the first person she gets to know who's life got shat on by the zombie apocalypse. But even after she's gone home and things really are marginally better, he's the one she thinks about in odd little moments of daydreaming and mild existential crises. So much so that she bags up some of the Neurotryptaline from her brother six month supply and buys back her colt from the pawn, just south valley. She digs out the little bracelet with all her connections attached to it and she mulls it over for days. In the end, she figures that she has the means to try and help somebody and so she's obligated to do it.

It's really not hard to prepare herself for the worst. She's lived through five years of shambling, groaning bodies coming at her with one thought driving them. But there's still a bit of a shock when she stumbles into Columbus' world and finds that there's quite literally nothing left.

There's a gas station and a truck: a touch to the bonnet tells her it's just been switched off. There's no lights anywhere, save a few street lights that must be running on the very last dregs of back up power. Jem keeps her backpack on her, her gun at the ready and she eyes 7/11 with wary, wide eyes. Her heart beats in her chest in a way it hasn't done for a very long time, adrenaline and anxiety fuelling her cautious steps inside and doubt lingering close to the forefront of her mind. Truthfully, she's really not sure she can handle another apocalypse. Bravado and heroics hadn't come easy the first time: she'd made herself callous and indifferent to cope with the things she'd had to see. A second one is a daunting task, especially with the circumstances and the undead being so apparently different.

Still, she's here. She edges in and sees, at first, the faint silhouette of a person loading up his bag with supplies and then she sees another, hunched over and edging curiously along with a disconcerting drip, drip, drip following behind him. His arm is missing, she realises, with her gut sinking. He makes a noise not unlike the guttural, hollowed out moan Kieren had made while fighting the Blue Oblivion and Jem points her gun with a knot in her chest and she fires, dead centre to the back of his head.

He goes down with a heavy thud which, to Jem's ears, seems louder than the echoing bang of her gun. The last time she killed a person it had been a foolish, stupid mistake made out of fear. Frozen in place momentarily, she feels the same, horrible emptiness she'd felt when staring down at Henry's corpse. Nauseated, she glances up to the figure beyond the slumped corpse and she squints, miserably, through the dark. ] Say something so I know you're alive, before I shoot you too.
