"I think that's enough for now. You'll just have to read the rest of it yourself, find out what happens to his uh..." He looks down at the book for reference, "Tempered shaft and her moist flower." He makes a face, unsure whether he appreciates Varric's purple prose, but it at least doesn't detract from the precious man before him.
"If you turn any more red you'll make the fire jealous, Inquisitor."
no subject
A moan slips out, exasperated and embarrassed. Really, if he'd realised it was that... that lewd, he would've suggested Krem just borrow it after he was finished. The elf shakes his head against his knees.
"I suppose it's my own fault," he says, and finally lifts his head; although he can't quite bring himself to make eye contact. "I don't suppose I'll ever live this down." The fact that he liked the first one enough to borrow the following two and--
"Please don't tell Bull."
no subject
Not the best judge when it comes to works of fiction. "And I won't. I'm not that mean. You tell Bull anything not strictly in confidence and it's through the chargers and Skyhold within the day." He knows their mercenary group was rabid for gossip and drank it in as easily as they threw back pints.
He set the book down between the both of them and instead turned his gaze to the fire, smiling at it and the warmth it gave. He was barely cold any more, even with the open ceiling. "It's still a wonder to me how easily that comes to you. If it were me I'd be sitting here for ten minutes with a flint and some tinder, hoping the draft doesn't blow out what little sparks I've got going."
no subject
"Oh, I've learned that," he says with a little chuckle. "Thankfully, not at my expense."
He looks to the fire too, and shakes his head. "It took me years to be able to do even that much," he says. "I was lucky that spirit magics came fairly easy to me, but I'm awful with anything else. It wasn't until the Mage-Templar war began that Keeper Istimaethoriel insist I push myself to learn more offensive magic."
no subject
The keeper's name gets him to laugh though, not at all at the name itself, but the length of it. "Sorry- Your keeper, their name sounds almost Tevene. It's long...you don't get that often outside of the country. It's a mouthful, like mine." He tries to explain so as not to sound disrespectful, but truly is curious. Lasulahn's name was long in itself as well, but not quite like the keeper's.
"What sort of people are in your clan anyways? I've never really heard you talk of them. If you don't mind me asking."
no subject
Not that his own full name was much shorter. The question gives him a thoughtful pause, and he considers as his gaze turns back towards the fireplace. His expression softens into something tender, and decidedly longing. "All sorts, I suppose. Our clan wasn't very large, but large enough. Our Keeper, she's very wise, and very patient, but firm when need be. She's always done well by our clan. She kept us safe through the war, without having to isolate ourselves completely."
He's quiet for a brief moment. "The hunters are the brash ones, for the most part. They stay at the camp when we trade with humans, most of them tend to be a bit...argumentative with them." He chuckles at the memory. "Our hahren-- the clan elder, I mean, he's a cranky, impatient man. I think I'm responsible for half the white hairs on his head. Our master craftsman is much more patient. And then there's our hearthmistress. I've never known a gentler woman."
Oh, how he missed them.
no subject
Race wasn't so much an issue in the Chargers, or homeland, and so it was easier he thought, for him to be more comfortable, most respectful, but at the same time, being Tevene, there wasn't much room for assumptions after the long history between their people.
He feels like he's being honored with the conversation about the small Dalish clan, nodding as he listens. Some words are foreign, some he wonders about the history of necessity that goes with a nomadic lifestyle in each mention, and he practically snorts when he mentions their elder. "You don't seem the type to have been a rambunctious child. Though I suppose perhaps you could have gotten to mischief. Did you leave behind many friends and family when you came here?" He himself had left Tevinter as a fugitive, and not so willingly and organized, but at times, even if he didn't agree with her, he missed his mother. There wasn't much talk of his father either, and at times he wondered how life was treating him. Of the two, he missed him more.
no subject
Lasulahn shakes his head slightly. "Not rambunctious, no, but I was constantly at his heels, begging him to tell me legends of our gods, or teach me more of the elvhen language." His expression becomes thoughtful, a little more sad. "My clan is my family," he says wistfully, but then adds: "My father died when I was young, and I have no brothers or sisters. My mother remains with the clan, and my two close friends. It has been... many months, now, since I have seen them."
He wraps his arms around his legs, tucking into a small ball almost, resting his chin on his knee. "What about you, Krem? You mentioned your father before, but what about your town? Friends?"
no subject
"You were more of a studious child then. Ah...I was always at my fathers heels when I could be, I know how that is. When you're a child, being near them is such a privilege, so you consume as much of their time as you can." He nods as he speaks though, feeling for his loss. He only comments when asked though, piecing his thoughts together.
"My father isn't dead, but he sold himself into slavery before I was able to join the army, so I understand that loss, if only a little. My mother wanted me to marry up good, and I suppose if I had, perhaps then he would be free, but...I don't think he would have wanted that life for me, even in the way that he's living now. He understood more than my mother did, even if he never said anything." His fingers play with one of the many leather straps of his armor as he talks, distracting himself from the subject matter. "I send money back still, but even if I wanted to see my mother, see any friends I had made in the army, it wouldn't be easy. My crime wasn't the most serious, but it still wouldn't be safe to travel back to Tevinter any time soon. And it's already been years..."
no subject
Bewilderment crosses the Inquisitor's face. "Sold-- himself into slavery? Wh-" But then he frowns, and realises that perhaps he broached a sensitive topic.
"Krem, if I've overstepped myself- I'm sorry." His expressions softens into something sort of doleful, but also admiring. "You've been through a lot to get where you are."
no subject
Still, at the other man's shock, he sits up, not wanting him to distress himself. "He- Yes. He's a part of the Servus Publicus now, owned by the state for the people. It's the choice of the poor in Tevinter rather than the slums you might see here. You're either on the edge of slavery or slaves. It's...much different. At the very least citizens have the choice. I feel for the ones sold to private owners. There are laws in place to keep them treated well, but...I can't speak much about it. A Tailor's son doesn't see the high life."
Still, he shakes his head, not too bothered. It was his life, and while he did miss his father, hated the decision he had to make so his family wouldn't starve, it wasn't something he couldn't talk about. "It is probably good for you to learn about it anyways, and you can only get the noble view from Dorian. He wouldn't know much of the lower class. You can ask me more if you'd like, I don't mind."
no subject
"Right. That might help me. Andruil knows nothing else would."
The Inquisitor considers Krem's words with a visible sort of discomfort. "It's not a choice if you're giving up your freedom, is it?" He frowns. He and Dorian had their discussion about slaves, and it was perhaps the one thing they'd genuinely argued about. "Yes, we've... spoken about it," he says carefully, but there's a touch of bitterness in his tone he can't quite hide. "I have a hard time seeing his view. He is in a position to own slaves, and I am one that has had to fight off those that would sell me into slavery." But then the Inquisitor smiles. "Whatever you'd like to tell me. I wouldn't know what to ask, really."
no subject
"It isn't a choice for yourself, but for the freedom of your family," He returns. "I suppose if you didn't have one, then it wouldn't be a choice, if you were so desperate, but I would assume most that are by themselves would have no ties and could easily pick up and find more work if they needed to." He shrugs, it's a fact of life that people down in the dirt couldn't change.
"The ability to create on just the cost of sheltering your workers creates much more profit...I couldn't see the magisterium giving it up in the long run, despite how much it demonizes our country for doing so." He isn't quite so sure his opinions have much basis, just what he's seen in life. He was no scholar.
"There is so much else that the world demonizes Tevinter for, what's one more thing."
no subject
Lasulahn shakes his head. "I cannot imagine that. Slavery for the elves is not a choice." Slavery for the elvhen meant midnight raids, fighting slavers with stronger weapons or more men or more mages, losing hunters every time they came.
"Our Clan kept to the borders of the Free Marches, but we always avoided the Imperium. It... was never really about what people said of the country, though, but our experience." Lasulahn smiles. "You and Dorian have shown me that not all the rumours are right, either way. I'm grateful for that."
no subject
As a Tevinter citizen, those things that came to mind weren't a reality for him, but it was something he was aware of. "Traders only get paid for what they catch, what they sell. It's greed that fuels that and I suppose if you have the stomach for trading in flesh, there isn't much left to find offensive." And yet, he felt like apologizing. There was so much that his country did wrong, so much that even Dorian could recognize the flaws, even if not all of them, from his high seat.
"Unfortunately the few you find does not change the workings of a nation. At the very least Dorian might have the ability to invoke change. I'm useless in the face of social change in Tevinter." But he doesn't seem all that bothered, recognizing that. It wasn't his place to imagine changing the world in that way.
no subject
Lasulahn gives a weary sigh. He'd spent too much time in the great hall lately, listening to Fereldens grumble and Orlesians uselessly posture between fretting about whether the Skyhold baths had the right sort of soap. "Forgive me. Our clans are not so different, when we meet for our arlathvhen. It is a blessing we only meet every ten years. I cannot know if we would come together as I feel we should, because we don't have that opportunity." That was sorrowful in its own right. Supposedly the elvhen nation was once peaceful and harmonious, and now they were splinters from the same branch that all thought they belonged to different trees of the same forest. They could never agree on many things, and it pains him.
But the elf smiles faintly then, and shakes his head. "It is good that you want things in your country to change - both of you. But even if you think you can't change Tevinter, you can change people's impressions of it. You're a good person, Krem. People notice that. If it can change someone's mind, 'maybe not all Tevinters are bad,' then perhaps that could be well enough?"
no subject
"If the Chantry wasn't up it's own ass about how important it was to saving the world, I'm sure we'd all be better for it in this war." An unpopular opinion to be sure, but the Chantry hadn't ever done much for him in life, and in Tevinter it wasn't such a driving force as it was for many of the southern nations. "It might hold the nations together as a common ground, but it shattering should have made them much stronger for it, not leaving them all bickering at it's wake." He understands the frustration, sees it and can do nothing. It's why he convinced Bull to join in the first place. It was what they could do in this time of unrest, rather than fight still for hire by the bickering masses of men in high places with far too much money.
"I know little to nothing about Arlathvhen-" He pronounces the word slow, as foreign as it is to him, but it's obvious he's trying hard not to get it wrong, "People as a whole, it seems as if agreeing for the good of the world is like giving up, it makes it all the harder the more men you get in one room, one meet." Still, he isn't so sure he and Dorian are the shining lights of Tevinter, both being essential Pariah's in their home country, a testiment if anything that the supposedly good men of Tevinter were cast out, but he tries not to think too heavily on that.
"I suppose to me, and possibly to Dorian that idea seems like...settling for less, but you're very right. Even if Change is slow, or starts outside the country, it's still happening. As ground into tradition as Tevinter is, some day it will need to move forward, and I suppose I can hope the rest of the world helps move with it."
no subject
Even if he hadn't had such an upbringing, when he travelled as he did, seeing the suffering in Thedas first hand, read the name of every soldier that died under his command, saw food shortages, and terrorised children, and people freezing to death because of rebels and bandits and rogue Templars... it was difficult to not quickly lose patience with the trivial whining of various nobles... or the self-important attitudes of Chantry sisters that had nerve to claim Leliana and Cassandra were "just two souls" for the Inquisition, but critically important for the next Divine to be decided, regardless of Corypheus still threatening them.
"Ah, there are some words that have no translation in the common tongue, I forget sometimes others don't know them. Arlathvhen is the meeting Dalish clans have once every ten years. It lasts for two days, and in that time, clans exchange artefacts we've found, and things we've learned. We also tell stories, to make sure we remember correctly, and do not lose what precious little history we still have."
Lasulahn smiles. "It perhaps does not seem like much, but it is." The idea of an allied Tevinter seemed far away, but perhaps not impossible.
no subject
The idea of the existence of spoken word as the only way to preserve your history would be terrifying to any Tevinter citizen. Even being part of the Soporati, lacking the education the nobles did, he knew much of the past in Tevinter, the past glories and the fascination with bloodlines and local history. "I-" He goes to say, but isn't sure whether he should announce his grievance aloud. "If it isn't rude for me to say, I'm sorry. We have so many records...I could probably spout the names of my family going back generations, even for someone in my position, they have it all noted in books, hundreds of years worth of names. It would be too little to say that your loss is a shame...a tragedy."
He glances down at his hands, knows that it isn't anything he can apologize for, wasn't his fault, and yet there is guilt. He enjoys Lasulahn's company, and yet felt wrong about it at times when they spoke of their own people. Like perhaps he didn't deserve it, that the Lavellan's and his clan deserved more. "I was the one who talked the chief into joining the inquisition...I thought it was the right thing to do. And yet here you are, head of us all and you never asked for it. It wasn't a decision you could make, to leave, or even to join. It was forced upon you." He glances up, looking at the other man, a little unsure of his words, but feeling them heavy on his chest. "I hope that what ever happens, it's worth what you're giving up, and that your people are stronger for it. They deserve that. As do you, inquisitor."
no subject
Lasulahn quietly considers Krem's words. The fault of the fall of the Dalish could be laid at the feet of many, not the least of all was the Imperium. "It is not your fault," is what he carefully, quietly settles on. "We have our books and our records, but they are precious and rare." He looks down sadly. "It is the nature of our existence now, and ever are we defined by it." He sighs quietly, shoulders slumping in a rare display.
"So it was you that convinced him to 'pick a side', was it?" he asks softly, with less humour than he intended. He still recalls their first conversation, months ago in Haven. "I am glad you did."
He smiles at Krem, but it is thin and strained. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Whether I would have asked for it or not is of little use now. Ir suledin nadas."
