Bright Spot

The world can sometimes seem like a cold, wicked place, and more than likely, it actually is a cruel place. For days, months, years on end, you never catch a break, everything falling to pieces as soon as you pick it up. Maybe, despite this, you still try your hardest. There has to be a light at the end of the tunnel, doesn't there? The fates don't play favorites, so surely your number is about to come up. Or maybe you've given up and decided to allow yourself to barely float along with only bouts of anger or bitterness to keep you above water. There is no light anywhere, is there? But there is. There's one bright spot in your life - a person who makes everything worthwhile. It doesn't really matter how they came to you. What does is that they stay. Whether you admit it or not, you seek comfort from them...and, perhaps, them from you, if you're in the same situation. So, whether you push them away, treat them right, or go so far as to worship them and put them on a pedestal, you don't want them to go now. You crave being with them, or at least being in their presence. Don't ruin this for yourself. After all, what would you do without your little ray of light? You'll do anything to keep them happy and loved. Anything. Respond to the meme with your character, canon, preferences, and, if you'd like, what position you're character will be in. Respond to others.

Draco has been trying. He has been trying and trying and so many people throw it back in his face and he can't even be angry because he deserves it. That's fine. He breathes and lives and does what he can. These days he opts to do it more quietly, quick and sly and cunning and more truly Slytherin than he's ever been. How it should be.

But there's Luna, too. Luna who sees the good in him when no one else does, who stands by his side in public (at social gatherings like she belongs there. It makes things easier. It makes people look at him differently.

Funny, how refusing help so long had been the detriment.

He doesn't know what to say to her, some days. Those times they just sit in silence and it's all right. Today has been one of those days so far, even if they're spending time together. She always seems to find things he can help with that he can handle, that will accept him.

They've only just finished one of those, now.

It was the first night in the nearly three months that he and Goodnight Robicheaux had been acquainted for that Billy had decided to go into a saloon, alone. It should have been fine, after all. He had his knives and he hadn't conned half of the village out of their money, yet (that was going to be tomorrow). He just wanted a simple double of whiskey before heading on up to their rooms over at the old inn and getting a good night's sleep before the match.

But being around Goody had almost made him forget what narrow minded folk they worked around, out here. And what it was like to be forced to back down to them.

He could have killed them all, of course. But he and Goodnight needed the money. And a glass of whiskey and his pride wasn't enough to throw away what could be as much as a hundred dollars on. No matter how much he wanted to.

'Your kind'. 'Chinaman'. 'Slant'. The mocking kept going even after he turned on his heel like a coward and walked out. He'd show them all in the morning. But for right now, he was pissed.

The door to their room slammed open as he kicked it with the heel of his boot. If the con was going to work, he couldn't even take out his aggression with his knives against some tree. It was all just pent up. Stewing. But here, in the privacy of their own room, he pulled one blade free and let it fly, watching it land straight inside a pillow on the bed.

Ever since he took revenge on his family and became a name and face known throughout New York and beyond, Frank Castle has turned into a ghost. There are so many rumors and stories circulating around the fate of the Punisher that it's impossible to know what is real or what isn't. The last time anyone saw him was when he was on top of that building after shots were fired and a bunch of dead ninjas were located soon after. The home of the Castle family was found in flames after that. And then... just nothing.

Some think he was killed. Some think he left the city, the state, or even the country. Frank finds it impossible to leave, though. Not when the only thing he knows is Hell's Kitchen, and one of the few people who ever believed in him is here.

A man with a full beard and a blanket draped over him sit against a building on a city sidewalk. He's not asking for handouts, but some people have already dropped some money in front of him. He was minding his own business, when some punks happen by and one of them thinks it funny to rush him and blindside him with a kick to the ribs. The blanketed man grunts and doubles over, much to the amusement and laughing of the punk.

[ Sometimes, Duo Maxwell was a bit like a stray dog. He lingered away, just out of reach for a suitable period of time, not wanting to get too close too soon or place too much faith in someone before they were ready. But with a good bit of encouragement and possibly some food - (with Duo, the more food the better) - he would come to be the greatest friend a man could have, even if it wasn't a particularly rewarding job to have.

Trowa and Heero had a lot alike in that they didn't speak much and weren't particularly social people, but.... Duo didn't mind. Having them around felt less like he had to entertain and act when all he wanted to do was sit and take the world in, from time to time. Yes, he tended to be a bit of a hyper guy from time to time, however.. finding time to just sit like this with Trowa, enjoying some sun on some remote field on who the hell knew where on Earth was.. peaceful.

The kind of peaceful he really thought he'd never have until he found himself, lounged like a lizard on a hot rock in July, with his hands behind his head, soaking up the heat and relaxation that came with enjoying a real sun. ]

[Battles tended to be one of two things nowadays; emotional slogs, or physical slogs. Most fell into the former category now that they were getting closer to confronting the Hoshido siblings, but there was no denying that the physical toll was quite steep. It's the main reason Flora tended to people once the battles were over--her sister could handle the fight much better than she could.

Even still, there wasn't any mistaking Corrin's reaction to the day's battle. Whatever happened on the outside was taxing. Flora had her duties to tend to and Corrin could probably use the time to be left alone, but...

Well. If the knock on Corrin's treehouse is any indication, those duties would face a slight delay.]

The bonfire is a large and roaring beast, and even from where Bertolt is sitting at the very edge of the circle of light, he can feel the heat spilling over him. The other trainees are outlined against the bright flames, laughing, singing, clapping. Jean has brought out the old fiddle that had been left at the barracks, abandoned there by some previous year's trainee, and cheery folk tunes underline the laughter. He's not the best Bertolt has ever heard play, but he is the best they have, and in any case, it seems like most of them are too drunk to notice it when Jean's fiddle screeches and hiccups over the harder notes.

Tonight they celebrate graduation. Tonight, for one night, they are invincible, the shining survivors of three years of harsh training. After tomorrow, many of them might never see each other again as they fan out, joining the ranks of the MPs, the Garrison, or even the Survey corps for those brave, suicidal few.

And for once, their instructors seem deaf and blind to the racket they are making and the smuggled in bottles of alcohol that are getting passed between the trainees. But then, perhaps this ritual is older than just their little group. Perhaps this is something that happens every graduation, a last hurrah for a ground of small little soldiers that might not even be alive anymore come next winter.

Might not even be alive anymore come the next evening if Bertolt carries out his orders correctly.

Part of him wishes Annie were here, but most of him knows that the walls between the two of them are as high and frost covered as the walls she has erected between herself and this group of soldiers they must soon kill. He doesn't know if Annie's absence is a sign of her inner strength or a sign of the cracks in her crumbling resolve, but he think she will be there tomorrow. They don't talk much, except for when they need to for the mission, but Bertolt knows she has something to come home to, a father that is waiting for her.
