Things have been getting bad lately. Regulus knows this, Sirius knows this, they all know this. Most of the time Regulus stays in his room when things go bad. Sirius insists on it even though they have so many differences now, it's--he sits in his bedroom silent and still and tries not to listen. Some nights, it's almost impossible. Tonight, it is impossible. The voices rising from downstairs keep getting louder and louder and louder and there's none of the tell-tale silence afterward and it gets so terrifying that Regulus ends up sneaking out of his room and tip-toeing down the stairs, practically holding his breath as he peers around the door frame of the sitting room that Sirius and their mother are arguing in. He's gotten very good at being still and silent over the years.

She sounds the worst he's ever heard her and that's the scariest part of all.

Neville doesn't mean for it to happen. The entire war, he hasn't killed anyone. He hasn't killed anyone no matter what, has only disarmed, disabled--it was only a matter of time.

"Detention" with the Carrows is torture on the best of days. It's worse when others are there with him. When other DA members are there getting punished he tries to draw their ire to himself, to take all the pain on so they don't have to suffer. He used to be soft but he can take it now, he reasons, and the more of them that are healthy the better. Best one of them be bad off but everyone else fine than all of them worse for wear as badly as the siblings would do to them.

Tonight, it's Neville and Luna and a third year. Tonight, it's only Amycus because Alecto is running a separate detention for other students. Ones she wants to punish without being interfered with. Neville and Luna will patch them up later. If they're not too far gone themselves. Amycus is in top form, tonight. Unfortunately being in top form means he's keeping himself from being dragged into Neville's goading. In fact, worse - he's making Neville watch the torture. His blood is boiling, he's desperate, cursing, trying to get free from his bindings. They're physical ropes rather than magic, to add insult to injury. He's working his wrists slowly, feeling the roughness dig into them, cut them, blood dripping down his fingers. Amycus is so preoccupied that he doesn't even notice.

The younger student is bound also but Luna isn't because she's already turned inward. Tonight her non-reaction is just making Amycus angry. It's when he reels back to slap her bare-handed, back to him, that Neville finally gets free and drags himself to his feet with rope in hand. Neville is seeing red and Amycus has no chance. He doesn't even notice until Neville jumps onto his back, throwing his whole weight forward and wrapping the rope around the front of Amycus' throat to yank back toward himself.

He wants him to stop, to pass out, wants to get them out of there and hide until things get slightly better. But Amycus is flinging his wand back to curse him and Neville jerks it from his hand before hopping back, hand shaking as he points it at him. This wasn't what he meant to do. Amycus is dazed from being choked out but lunges for him anyway and Neville reacts instinctively.

He slashes the stolen wand in a downward diagonal without even uttering a spell - it's just a rush of magic, pure hate and rage and--oh.

There's so much blood.

The Death Eater's eyes go wide and he stumbles back once before toppling forward - right onto Neville, who's shaken and startled and weakened enough that it shoves him back onto the stone floor. They're both gasping for breath: Amycus because he's dying and Neville because he's letting him.

He thinks the third year is still screaming.

Sam had always kind of assumed that becoming a vampire meant an end to her days...er...nights of waking up somewhere and not remembering how she got there. Evidently, that had been optimistic. Which was funny, because she was pretty much as sour a pessimist as a person could be.

The glass wasn't half empty. It was half empty and cracked.

And cracked was also kind of how her head felt, at the moment.

She sat up with a groan, pressing her head against her forehead. Damn it, she was wet. "Please let it be mine, please let it be mine, please let it be mine," she chanted softly to herself, pulling her hand away, to see it glisten like rubies. There was a sting left behind. Yes! Good. It was her blood.

Now...where the hell was she and why was she bloody?

As soon as they get to the Burrow weak and shaking Molly drags them inside and sits them down equal part furious and near tears. She doesn't cry in front of them though, not until Scorpius finally breaks through the disassociation haze and starts to sob, great heaving things that shake his entire body. Albus holds him and they're both plied with chocolate both solid and liquid, then hot tea, then soup, then she just sits and holds them curled against her sides and safe in her warm arms.

Once Scorpius has cried himself out she lets them stay with her a while longer before she urges them to bed to rest. Albus stays with Scorpius until he's settled into sleep and then some, coiling around him like he can protect him from the world. Protect him from all the things he failed to protect him from last time. But his anxiety can only manifest in quiet for so long - once he's sure that Scorpius is at least settled into some semblance of sleep for now that won't be interrupted, Albus slips out into the kitchen again.

He paces as quiet as possible, not wanting to wake anyone that's home that he hasn't seen. Not wanting to wake Molly if she's asleep. He does this for well over an hour, back and forth and back and forth and checking on Scorpius every twenty minutes and--finally, finally, he sits. He sits at the kitchen table and keeps his head in his hands and breathes, listening to it shake with each inhale and exhale.

His fault. His stupidity.

Eventually, he drops his face into his arms and sobs, unable to keep from holding it in any more.

[ if Buck could choose only one word to describe the op, it would be sloppy. it'd been a simple enough at first, secure hostage, eliminate all enemies, and get home in time to watch the Nordiques play. the first part had been easy enough; they'd found the ambassador curled up under a secretaries desk, whimpering through his gag as he jumped with every gunshot that went off. it was the second part where they well... 'fucked up'.

intel told them there were at most twenty terrorists holed up in the embassy, but what they hadn't mentioned was that they had friends in the area, at least an entire platoons worth. nothing they couldn't recover from, but crisse was the action neverending. close quarters combat had never been his forte, and it was only in the nick of time he'd managed to unsheathe his knife and cut down the extremist that charged him from a corner, cursing up a storm as he hit a vein.

the team was adaptable, and he knew they'd been in far worse situations before. still, it was unnerving being in a situation where they were nearly blind, after comms had been jammed by some asshole with the slightest bit of technical knowledge. he managed to keep a calm face, brow slightly furrowed, with the only sign of stress the thinning of his lips.

he didn't revel in killing, but he certainly didn't shy away from it. unfortunately today, it seemed like they'd be tagging and bagging just a few more bodies than they'd planned for. ]

[ casual topic, as if the situation were nothing out of the ordinary. they were holed up behind an overturned desk, the ambassador whimpering and curled at Buck's feet, using him as just one more shield between him and any rogue bullet spray. it'd gone quiet in the last few minutes, most likely as the opponents were regrouping or finding a better route of entry. he gave it 2 more minutes max before they came back for another round. ]

It's been far too long since he's had a drink. The small rats and rabbits and vermin weren't doing it for him anymore. He had been trying hard to ignore. As much as his throat burns, he can't. He just can't. Though his head pounds from the sounds of the pulses beating around them. He always heard them like deafening beats of a war drum when he's about at the end of his rope. When he's so hungry and so desperate that he considers falling to his true nature and feasting.

Goodnight clutches the table with his fingers. He can barely think straight any more. His eyes track a few figures. Murders the lot of them. He'd been hunting them since St Louis, a shadow in the darkness, a ghost in the fog, picking off the stragglers and leaving drained corpses behind. Each time feeling soul sick and heavy because wasn't he just the same? Wasn't he just as bad? Or worse?

He could argue that he's just hunting to eat. To survive, but he knows the truth. He kills like they do. He takes their dirty blood into him and gets more filthy each time he drinks from them. Soon, he'll be worse that the vermin he hunts if he isn't already. But he knows rats or whatever critter he passes next won't help him. It'll just make things worse. He has to pick a human.

Goody keeps watching the men in the bar. He thinks he knows which he'll take tonight. The big one. The big one looks perfect. He's about to stand and start his hunt when the door opens and another pulse is added to the cacophony, a strong pure steady pulse. He sits back down to watch the newest addition to the bar.
