[A start, and then she's drooping once more. She'd clean forgot, amidst all the excitement earlier.]
I can't, the folks are expecting me for dinner... [Which Kanan was agreeable to, between her parents running the shop in the tourist seasons and her spending more and more time at school, the opportunity didn't come by so often. At this point, though, it only adds to her reluctance to leave.]
[ There's a tiny pang of disappointment in Mari's chest at that, but but it's stifled easily enough. Family's important! And she knows Kanan hasn't been getting as much time with hers as of late. ]
Ah, that's good! Tell your parents ciao from me, okay? [ A beat. ] And I can back you up on the yakuza incident, of course!
Oh! Does he? [ Beaming-- ] He's such a cute little old man!
[ Kanan's home was always so nice -- Mari's never really ceased to be struck by it. Her family's been warm and welcoming from the day she'd met them, even though she was all kinds of nervous and fidgety, and couldn't really introduce herself well. There's the sort of air to it that feels like... well, just like Kanan's home would, really. Mari likes it. ]
It really has been a while since I dropped by, huh? I'll have to fix that sometime!
[ Mari lets out a giggle -- a little bit embarrassed herself, but delighted, too. ] You're awful smooth today, Kanan. I can't say no to that!
[ She twirls the end of her ponytail around her forefinger, contemplative: ] Hmm, now that I think about it, should I be formally introduced to your parents again? [ Gasp--! ] Do I ask your father for your hand?!
[ Mari stares back, her gaze only interrupted by a series of rapid, successive blinks. Kanan's shock seems to have shocked her equally in turn; she considers a moment, chews on her cheek, and finally says: ]
[So what if she sorta imagined the scene a little. Just...as a natural progression.
Mari's basically considered part of the family already, anyway. She rolls her eyes. To tell her that would let Mari have a lot more satisfaction than she feels like giving right now.]
[ Goodness, that's a real scary glower Kanan's got going there. Unfortunately it only propels Mari straight into a giggle fit, her whole frame quaking against her. ]
Geez! You were making such a serious face, I didn't know what to do! Don't tell me you really thought I meant it?!
Absolutely! [ She grins, guilty as charged. Though-- her features soften there, and she lifts a hand, lightly brushing the backs of her curled fingers to Kanan's cheek. It's a little uncharacteristic when she says: ]
[There's no bite to the words, though. Her head bows slightly, chasing after the fleeting touch.]
I know you didn't mean anything bad. [Mari has an overabundance of talent at getting under people's skins, is all.] It just...vexes me, too, when I get mad at you.
Mm. [ Turning her hand to cup Kanan's cheek, Mari nods. Then she cocks her head a bit to the side, smiling. ] If I'd meant what I said, would you dislike it?

I'll still come over tonight, when we finish up.

She gives Mari a tighter squeeze, trying to convey if just a fraction of the multitude of emotion running through her right now.]
They haven't seen you in ages, you know. Grandpa always asks after you, too.
[Though Mari's family might not be with her currently, Kanan's cares about her like she does.]

(But it's true. He is cute.)]
Of course. They'll love to have you.
[And, softer in embarrassment:] So would I.

Several seconds pass as she stares, slack-jawed, dumbfounded. The words refuse to come.]
Uh.
[Let's try that again.]
Seriously?

[If Kanan rolls her eyes any harder, she'll soon be able to see the inside of her skull.]
Why did you get so dramatic for the sake of a joke. [And not even a very funny one...]
no subject
Was I that dramatic? [ Mari doesn't really monitor these things... ] I just think it's cute when you get flustered and scold me!
[ At least she's straightforward...?! ]
no subject
Times like these, she has to question how her immunity to Mari hasn't improved much, if at all, over the years.]
It defeats the purpose of having to scold you in the first place...
[What a strange turn to take.
Being thought of as cute, whatever it was prompted by, is an unfamiliar situation to her.]
no subject
[ She laughs, shoulders hitching. ] Well, I think it's fine! It's fun that way!

[Dropping the topic there, she decides. Couldn't remain cross if she wanted, and wasn't particularly cross to begin with.]

I'm sorry for teasing.

["Like" and "dislike" are absolutes which don't apply, in this hypothetical situation.
A shrug.] Dad will probably tell you to try again when we're out of school, so.
