[ nearly the worst part about the way faraday exists with her now, ghost that he is, is that emma can't talk to him until they're alone together. when he follows her around town, she can't acknowledge his exitence (or lack thereof) in the event that she earns herself some intense staring and probably some questions about her sanity. considering she'd much prefer to avoid that, she finds it exceedingly difficult to keep her thoughts to herself after a particular stunt in town.

she's seen faraday amuse himself with relatively harmless pranks before — knocking off someone's hat, moving a chair, purposefully dropping an object just to make noise, even startling an animal just to get a reaction — but this had been a different level of interference, more to a joke than leaving one of the townspeople confused, maybe annoyed, because it was never this.

with this, when he'd spooked a horse with a rider? oh, it hadn't been pretty. the man had gone flying from the horse's back as it whinnied and bucked, so terribly alarmed by the gambler's ghostly presence that it had reacted on pure panicked instinct. its rider hit his head on the way down, and for a moment, the streets had been perfectly still as the horse took off in the opposite direction, before the man on the ground finally began to stir with a groan.

he was quickly offered help, of course, and taken off to the doctor, but emma was left mortified that faraday had thought he'd get a good laugh out of frightening an animal and flatout seeing to injuring a man.

emma closes the door to the house, turning to look at faraday with her arms crossed over her chest, expectancy in her gaze — like she's waiting for him to admit it was a mistake. ]

That's far from the sort of interference you ought to be doin' here.

It hurt. It hurt a lot, like ripping out her heart, because she and Draco never fought. Ever. Not like this. Sure, there were small tiffs here and there, but this--this was something far more visceral. Far more important. She breathed out slow and grounding, trying to fight back tears. She wasn't going to cry, not now. It wasn't fair.

She didn't deserve this. Neither of them did.

Draco deserved someone that wasn't broken. Someone that could provide him with what she couldn't. Or, well, she could but now he didn't want to let her. That was what hurt the most, she thought.

"I don't... I know the risks. I'm not stupid. I want this, Draco. I don't feel right. It's not fair to ask me to give that up just because of a possibility!"

(Only problem was, it wasn't so much a possibility as a certainty. Or--almost certainty. They had a small chance. She wanted it to be enough.)
