Okay. All right. So. Whether you like this person, love them, hate them, tolerate them - someone else has disrespected them in a way you can't abide by. Friends, family, lover, enemy, it doesn't matter. You're rarin' mad and ready to tussle with somebody in their honor. Maybe they can't do it themselves. Maybe they like watching you do it. Maybe they don't care and you're making a scene. What's the deal?
WHO ARE YOU PROTECTING?
1. FRIEND You're friends. Of course you want to protect them. 2. FOE You hate each other. But sure as hell you're not going to let someone ELSE talk shit on them. 3. LOVER Someone betrayed your lover's (or lovers', we don't judge here) honor! TIME TO FIGHT. 4. FAMILY Protecting your family is natural, isn't it? 5. STRANGER You don't know them, but someone is being awful to them. Fix it. 6. OTHER Who else? I dunno, we're not the cops.
REVENGE METHOD
1. ARGUMENT Use your words to deliver a righteous smackdown. 2. FIGHT Or like, use your fists to deliver a righteous smackdown. 3. MURDER Woah dude, maybe calm down a little. 4. PETTY Little tricks, pranks, whatever. Make their life hell. But quietly.
As always, these are just suggestions. Make up anything you want, as long as you're having fun!
"If he'd said something bad, it would've been better than what he did say."
Matt can still hear the smile in Danny's voice anyway. And maybe it was an over reaction, but it's always the little things that set people off.
"Good. It'd look bad if I had to defend myself for breaking a guy's face because he talked shit about my boyfriend. Don't those people out there have work to do?"
Danny just shakes his head. He doesn't let it show, but it hurts his feelings a little that there are still so many people in his company that don't like him. He can't blame them, most of them don't know him... or just make assumptions that spread like rumors. No one likes the man on top, no matter how humble said man tries to be.
"This is probably the most excitement they've had all week." He walks to his door anyway, pulling it open.
"Unless you wanna be the next one in the principal's office, scram." It's good natured, but it works well enough to disperse his staff.
He returns to Matt's side, fingers sinking into his hair. "Your temper's usually better than this-- what else is bugging you?"
"To be fair, I would've hit him anyway." Matt wouldn't have laid him out, but ...
He sighs, tipping his head into the touch. "It's nothing, it's ..." He doesn't want to admit that he does things without telling his team. He knows they know, they all have their own things to do. Matt just can't let go and ask for help when he needs it. "I've been trying to bring down a new crime ring. Every time I think I have them, I'm right back where I started. I don't know what I'm doing."
"I would hope not, I'd end up with an entire staff living in fear of my boyfriend coming up here and beating them up if they talk shit on me." He lets Matt's hair tousle between his fingers, bending down to press a kiss against his crown.
He should be upset that Matt's out doing this sort of thing alone, but it's no different for him. Even if Danny and Matt are together, the Devil and the Iron Fist often spend their nights pursuing different criminals. They covered more ground that way.
There's a frustrated exhale and Matt leans over to put his coffee cup on the desk. Sometimes, of the four of them, he feels like the odd man out. They're all lone wolves in their own way, but they all get along in their own way, and Matt often feels he's on the edge of it. Danny just managed to worm his way in a little better, but at the end of the day, Matt doesn't believe he brings much to the table. It's unfounded, he knows it, but that doesn't mean he wants to give them anyway excuses to think it for themselves.
"Maybe you're just approaching it from the wrong angle. Or maybe they have someone out there keeping an eye out for you-- it wouldn't be the first time guys like these picked up someone with skills like ours." Danny's fingers wander down to the back of his neck, thumb rubbing at some of the tension there.
"They have to be expecting you always, right? Anyone causing trouble in the Kitchen ends up meeting the Devil."
Danny's responses are entirely reasonable. They're so reasonable that they make Matt grumble, because it means he has no justification to be grumpy. Which makes him grumpier.
"Expecting me and knowing when I'll be there are different things." He's just going to stop trailing them and start punching them. Eventually someone will spill the information. "Do you want to beat each other up when you're done here?"
Matt at least attempts a smile to show he's joking. He won't really ever beat Danny up, but he knows he doesn't have to hold punches when they spar, and sometimes that's therapeutic.
Danny's fingers still for a moment, but he doesn't remove his hand from the back of Matt's neck. He can still feel the tension there, the thread of anger and frustration that runs through him.
"I thought I might buy you dinner and take you home to ravish in submission. But if you want to fight, we can do that too." Anything to help him blow off steam.
"It's alarming how every time we decide to commit accidental assault, we take each other out for dinner."
But it has Matt smiling, tipping his head back so Danny can see. None of that sounds as good as punching each other, but, well. Matt decides he owes it to Danny. All things considered. He owes Danny a lot of things. So he reaches to touch Danny's hip, pulling him close and pressing his nose into Danny's torso.
"Mm. I like your idea better. We can try that new place out finally."
"Don't think this is a reward, you still shouldn't go around 'defending my honor' like that." His fingers pass through Matt's hair are gentle, scratching soothingly at his scalp before cradling his head where it rests against his stomach.
"Though it is kind of hot." He lowers his voice to a conspiratory level.
There's a puff of breath as Matt laughs. He moves his head a little to the side and noses into Danny's skin between his shirt buttons. He inhales and sits back so he can stand up, kissing at Danny's chin.
"I should get going. So you can get back to work. I can call to make sure we get a table for dinner."
He moves to give Matt room to rise, fingers still buried in his hair. Danny grins at the kiss against his chin, guiding Matt's face up to press a proper kiss against his lips.
"I'll call you a car." Another kiss. "Please behave on your way out."
Matt just looks amused. He gives Danny a kiss of his own, feeling at least moderately more relaxed. "I'm sure your secretary will help me out. She likes me. By the end of the day no one will believe that a blind guy sucker punched your employee."
"She does like you, and she still thinks I'm going to sweep you off your feet to go elope some day." He rests a hand at the small of his back, tipping his head to rest his lips against Matt's forehead instead.
"She clearly knows a good thing when she sees it."
Danny's hip gets a pat and Matt reluctantly dislodges himself, because they'll never get anywhere like this. Okay, one more kiss on the cheek, then Matt is taking up his cane and heading for the door.
"I think it's why you love me. But that's good to know. Maybe I'll send her flowers."
Matt raises his eyebrows, but he's grinning as he leaves, turning to give Danny's secretary a little chat. He hopes Danny sees it when she walks around her desk to give Matt her arm, more than happy to walk him down to the waiting car.
