bad dreams are ordeals, sometimes seemingly endless. when you wake up, your heart pounds, your head hurts, and you end up drenched in sweat. even if you know none of it was real, it takes a while to orient yourself. it is pretty nice to have someone there to wake you up or to soothe you out of it and remind you that... it's only a dream. ••• the usual rules apply. post with your character and preferences and then tag around, have your characters comfort others.

It had been almost two months since Rose Creek. Two months since they both stood on top of that church, side-by-side. Billy could still remember it when he closed his eyes. He could still see Goody on his horse, returning to the battle and smiling over at him as they reloaded their guns. He could still hear the sound of the Gatling gun in the background, muted over the distance. Could still feel the burn and fire of the bullets hitting him, leaving him for dead.

Two months. And it still felt like yesterday. Which might have been part of the problem.

Billy had gotten off easier than Goodnight where it came to injuries. After all, he hadn't fallen from a roof. Which was helpful because, after healing up, Billy kept vigil over his friend, waiting for some sign he was going to pull through, refusing to be moved even when he started to burn with a fever from infection. Had he been worse off, he probably would have died from his foolishness. But he hadn't. And neither had Goodnight, which should have made everything better.

But it didn't.

Two months. And for the last two weeks of those two months, Billy had gotten maybe a few handfuls of hours of sleep.

He wasn't stupid. He knew what this was and why it was happening. How many times had he helped Goodnight through the very same thing? But it was different, being on the other side of it, now. Having your own mind rebel and show you things that weren't real but, God, did they feel real.

Goodnight, shot and bleeding to death on the ground. Billy watching him die in his bed, the doctors unable to help. The both of them separated over the battlefield, knowing the other would be dying alone. The nightmares changed, every night, but they were always the same.

And tonight was no different.

Billy had finally fell asleep three hours before, after being so exhausted he'd almost fallen off his horse, twice, before they found a town with an inn. But three hours was about his limit, it seems. And, like clockwork, his silent, quiet slumber changes.

"No..." His face contorts with pain as his body fights against the visions in his mind. Visions that feel so real. Fueled by the things he's already seen. Bullets flying. Blood pouring. His head turning, knowing that Goodnight is gone and will be gone forever. Sweat beads against Billy's forehead as he moans in his sleep. Knuckles white as he grips the blankets covering him.

Not again. Please, not again.

"Goody," he moans louder, the nightmare playing out before him. The dream real and vibrant and so clear it has to be true, this time. But it can't be. It just can't be. Where Goodnight goes, Billy goes. He can't be left alone, now.

The moans get louder. Pained as he fights the dream he can't escape from. The one that waits for him every night now. "No. No, please," he begs the spectres in his head. Not again. Not again. Not tonight.

"Goody!"

[ Sometimes it's difficult to discern the line between waking and dreaming.

You can try and count to ten, try to read the lines between the texts in books, and of course, the age-old adage of pinching yourself awake, but when you're within a dream, the line becomes blurred. Dream becomes reality. Lydia Martin should know all about that, shouldn't she? When she wakes up to the sound of the strident ringing of a phone, is she actually awake?

Or is she still dreaming? Because the voice on the other end is one that's haunted her dreams before, perfectly solicitous in its greeting. ]

[ Angela had always slept lightly— it came with life in a hospital. Long shifts, catching naps where at all possible, for however long possible. The moment someone so much as whispered "Ange" she was awake and (mostly) alert. So when Frank's arm over her waist tenses and his fingers begin to twitch, grumbling into the back of her head, she's up.

The room is still dark and her clock reads 3:18AM. Whatever plagues him, it's clear he's still asleep, words unintelligible and body tense where she's pressed back into him. His muscles jump and she's careful as she turns in his arms, trying not to disturb him when even in his dreams he's on guard.

So she'll settle into slipping an arm beneath his head, not stifling him with a hug but still easing his head against her neck, murmuring soft, soothing words. "It's all right", "You're safe", "you're dreaming". ]
