It happens to everyone - sometimes, you have nights where you just can't fall asleep, no matter what you do. It could be for a number of reasons, or no reason at all. And this is what's happened now: you've been laying in bed for what feels like hours, just tossing and turning, and nothing seems to help. So what's left to do? Get out of bed and go wake someone else up, of course. If you're not getting any sleep, then why should they?
i n s t r u c t i o n s • Post with your character (note the name and fandom in the subject). • Other people reply to you by generating a number from 1 to 10. • Have fun!
o p t i o n s 01 • FEAR. Maybe you're hearing strange, indeterminable noises; maybe there's a severe storm happening outside; maybe you watched a scary movie before bed? Whatever the reason, you're terrified and it's keeping you awake. You just want to wake someone else up so they can protect you from the monster in your closet. 02 • HUNGER. Your stomach is growling and it just won't stop. Or perhaps your throat is so dry you could cough up a tumbleweed? Well, you've gone to the kitchen to remedy this and hey, that was a pan that just dropped on the floor. It was loud enough to wake the dead! Oops. 03 • PAIN. Your body is completely worn out, be it from exercise, battle, sickness, or what have you. Either way you're in enough pain to keep you from sleeping, so maybe someone else has a home remedy or something, or can at least help you take your mind off of it. 04 • SOLITUDE. For some reason, your bed just feels so empty at the moment. You're feeling terribly lonely and really just want someone to keep you company for a while. Maybe it'd be easier to fall asleep if you're with them... 05 • DISCOMFORT. Your room is an oven. Either that or a freezer. Or maybe this bed is just really uncomfortable? Who knows why you can't get to sleep, it feels like it could be anything. Why even bother trying? Maybe someone else can preoccupy you until you feel tired enough to ignore your discomfort. 06 • PENSIVE. Something's on your mind, and no matter how hard you try to focus elsewhere, it's just not going to work. Your body may be tired, but your mind is incredibly busy and it's virtually impossible to get to sleep. Surely, talking it out with someone else will help? 07 • SADNESS. Something terrible has happened that day, perhaps; or you could just be severely depressed. Either way you're trying your hardest not to cry yourself to sleep, and it's not working at all. Better find a way to get it out of your system somehow; you need a shoulder to cry on. 08 • ANGER. You are just... fuming. Who knows why - that annoying dog is barking again, or maybe the people next door are getting busy and keeping you awake. Whatever the reason for your ire is, you'd better put an end to it so you can get some damn rest already! Go wake up a friend so you can complain to them. 09 • RESTLESS. You're far too energetic to sleep right now. Maybe you're just trying to do so out of necessity - you have to be up early tomorrow! But you just don't think you'll be able to fall asleep for a while now, so why waste the time trying to sleep when you could be doing something else? Namely bothering someone else - you're totally jealous because they're getting more sleep than you. 10 • WILDCARD. Choose one of the options above, or make up your own scenario. |

[She knows that's not what he means, though. Asami takes a deep, shuddering breath, but she can't manage to compose herself properly. Too much has happened. She can't be strong anymore.
And after all that has happened, she's more comfortable with Bolin than the others, anyway. Funny, how that works. She knows him the least.]
I guess I was just stupid enough to think he would come to his senses.
[Not try to kill her. Asami can't even bring herself to specify "my father." She's sure Bolin knows. He was there. And he isn't as clueless as his brother seems to paint him lately.]
no subject
You're definitely not stupid. I think that you're the smartest one on the team! [He sets his haul on the ground so that he can sling an arm around her shoulders in comfort.] And you and I both know that we're good-looking enough to spare a few hours of beauty rest, but you've gotta sleep sometime.
no subject
Bolin wouldn't leave her alone when she needed a friend.
Once she's started, though, it's difficult to stop. Too much has built up over these past few months. Fresh tears leak from her eyes as she leans lightly against her friend.]
I'm sorry, Bolin. I just can't handle it anymore.
[She can only be strong for so long before she broke.]
I've tried to sleep... But every time I close his eyes, I can see his face.
no subject
He wishes he had some advice to offer her, but even experience doesn't help him here. Pure exhaustion from endless hours practicing for the tournament had forced him to get some rest. Now that the storm has calmed, everyone is left with little to distract them.]
Hey, hey. There's no need to apologize. It'll be alright. [He settles for pulling her into a hug and letting her cry against his shoulder.] Want me to make you a cup of hot tea? Or maybe help you count pigsheep?
[He'll figure out a way to help. Somehow. He offers her a smile, hoping to get one in return. ]
no subject
I think tea sounds like a good idea.
[She's still leaning against him. She just needs somebody to hold onto.]
no subject
[He keeps his arm around her shoulder as he leads her into his favorite part of the dorms - the kitchen. Once there, he pulls out a chair for her, then quickly gets to work. All of his time spent rifling through the cabinets pays off, as he finds the kettle and starts heating it in no time at all.]
Too bad I'm not a firebender, huh? Instant hot water would be pre-tty nice right now. [While the water boils, he pulls another chair up for himself.] So... do you want to talk about it, or should I just be quiet and keep making the tea?
[He has to ask. Too many times he's been shushed for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and this time Mako isn't here to set him straight.]
no subject
She puts aside her self pity for a moment to address Bolin.]
No, Bolin, you don't have to just be quiet. [There is almost a bit of mocking in her tone. They are on good terms now, yes, but Asami is slightly annoyed by how Mako has been treating his brother lately. And how Bolin just seems to be accepting it. She sighs, glancing away for a moment and collecting herself.]
There isn't really much to say. It's nothing you don't already know. I guess the reality's starting to sink in, now that everything's over.
[She speaks quietly, her tone still slightly wavering.]
no subject
Reality can be pretty nasty sometimes, but I know you'll get through this. Not everything has to end badly.
[The kettle whistles, but he doesn't immediately get up.]
And don't think that you have to go through it alone, because we're all here for you. Me and Mako and Korra and Tenzin and his family... All of us. Alright?
[He waits for confirmation. The tea can wait, too.]
no subject
Her sorrows seem silly when put next to what her friends had endured. This is the real world, now. It's just the way life is.]
I know. I was so secure in the knowledge of how everything was going to be, and... well, it wasn't like this.
[Now she has the weight of her father's dying company on her shoulders. She has to take care of herself, now. And even though she always insists that she can, it's still a daunting task.]
That means a lot, Bolin. It really does.
[She gives him another weak, red-eyed smile.]
no subject
[With that, he goes to take the kettle off of the heat and readies the tea. Hopefully she likes her tea sweet, because that's what he's serving. Four cubes of sugar in every cup, because a little bit of sweetness makes everything seem a little better.]
I don't think any of us were expecting things to turn out this way but... unless time-bending is a thing, we can't change any of it.
[He and Mako have kept that philosophy for as long as he can remember. And it's a good one, or at least he thinks so. Tons of bad stuff had happened to him, but it didn't do him any good to think about it all the time. He much preferred thinking about what could be better in the future - maybe we'll have enough money for dumplings tonight, or maybe we'll get all the way to the championships!
He's not so naive to think that Asami would worry about little things like that - he'd gotten to live in the lap of luxury with her, after all - but he also doesn't hold her lifestyle against her. Losing a mansion is still losing a home, and that alone is hard enough. She doesn't need a lesson in what it's like to have nothing. She needs to learn that after she's lost it all, there's still hope to gain something back. And if street kids like him and Mako can turn their situation around, he's sure that someone as smart and talented as Asami will eventually figure things out.]
So we have to keep going. And if that means that I have to make you tea every night until things get better, then I'll do it.
no subject
Maybe we should put in a call to the spirits and see if they'll make it a thing. [She sighs.] I could use a little time bending right now. [Asami looks back up at Bolin.]
How about a bit earlier in the night, next time? Then I won't have to pretend to not know about your nightly pantry raid? [She raises an eyebrow, smirking slightly as she takes the mug from Bolin with a quiet word of thanks. Asami is tactful enough not to make a surprised face when it's like drinking candy. What else could she have expected from Bolin, anyway?]
no subject
What? Pantry raid? I don't know what you're talking about. Ha, ha...
[Seeing that his denial is getting him nowhere, he relents. He's never been good at lying like this, even if it is over something as small as midnight snacks.]
They aren't nightly. [They definitely are.] But even if they were, I'd gladly exchange them for tea time! You pick the time, and I'll make the tea.
no subject
[She's smiling fondly, though, thoughts of her father and the shaky future pushed from her mind for now.]
I'd love to drink liquid sugar with you any time, Bolin.
[Even if it's only for right now, Asami feels more at ease than she has in a very long time.]
no subject
You've got it! This kitchen will become Café Bolin whenever you need it.
[It's a relief to see Asami smiling again. Now that she's happy, he goes into full-on goofing off mode.]
Maybe next time I'll wear my fancy clothes and I'll look like a real waiter.
no subject
sugartea drinking with a friend is all she wants right now. Of course, she realizes Bolin is joking.]Maybe hold a bit of the sugar next time, too. [Asami gives a slight shudder as she downs the rest of her mug. There's a sizable pile of it at the bottom.]
no subject
[For a while, he thought that he had finally found someone else who liked his tea. Mako, Korra, Tenzin... all of the others had pretty much spit his tea out on the spot and banned him from tea duty.
Though he appreciates her tolerance of his sugary concoction, he can't help but laugh.]
You should've told me. I would've made you another cup!
no subject
[And Asami can't help but laugh with him. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she realizes that they should probably be a touch quieter. The last thing they needed was to wake up Tenzin. Though, the thought of the disgruntled airbender storming in here actually made her laugh harder at the moment.]
We're going to wake up the whole house... [It's stated as more of an amusing observation than a warning.]
no subject
[Stuff like this is why Bolin is not very involved in making plans for Team Avatar. He has the best intentions, but not a lot of foresight.
He does know that waking everyone up probably isn't a good idea, though. Getting a lecture from Mako about being rowdy at awful hours of the night is definitely not on his to-do list, so he tries to quiet himself down.]
If they get woken up, they'll just have to join us for tea.
no subject
But then we'll all be too wired to get to sleep. [She laughs a bit more, imagining the the both of them and the air kids slumped around the breakfast table in an overtired stupor.]
I think someone might catch on, eventually. We'll all be shuffling around, bleary eyed and coming down from sugar highs.
no subject
We'll all go to sleep when the sugar high is over! And then once everyone has a good nap, nobody will remember that we were up way too late and sneaking into the kitchen.
[He finishes with an eager smile.]
See, it'll all work out perfectly.
no subject
Maybe that will work with the air kids, but do you really think Tenzin would be so forgiving? [Those big ears of his pick up everything...]
no subject
[His assurance that they're not going to get in trouble is interrupted by the sound of a door opening and closing somewhere down the hall.]
Okay, maybe not.
[He scrambles to collect their cups and set them in the sink. It's time for flight, because that is always what he's done at signs of trouble.]
no subject
Come on! [She grabs Bolin's arm for a moment and leads the way into the hall. She wouldn't put it past the earthbender to stub a toe or accidentally slam a door in a moment like this. Asami doesn't dare to even take a glance down the adjacent hallway where Tenzin and the kids slept. She half tip-toes, half runs toward the door they came in.]
no subject
Hey, I didn't know you were good at getaways!
[He whispers - still rather loudly - as he lets himself get dragged along.]
no subject
Asami skitters out the door and back out onto the porch, closing the door silently behind her.]
