But it wasn't the battle that did it, nope...it was Rei slipping and falling off a picnic table after they'd taken out the enemy. High heels and slotted picnic tables don't mix, she should have known that, but she just had to go for a higher vantage point and now...

Now, she's both in a ton of pain and incredibly embarrassed as she leans on Jupiter's shoulder.]

[Have a very pregnant defense attorney sharing your cab, Captain. A very pregnant defense attorney who's actually in labor and needs to get to the hospital right away because she's not sure how much longer the baby will wait! And her husband's working late on a case, he's not sure when he'll be able to get there, and, well...

Mia's not very happy right now.]

Why won't this traffic move?! [she hisses as another contraction grips her, one arm wrapped tightly around her belly] Ugh...

[Well this is...not what he expected today. At all. He'd eyed her more than a little critically when she first got in, half expecting her to wuss out and opt for another one the minute she saw her prospective co-passenger, but she didn't, and here she is. Still.

He's sprawled out about as much as he can in the enclosed space when she starts getting testy, and he's starting to scrounge through his pockets for something to entertain him until he gets to where he's going when she starts squirming and making more protesting noises. He looks at her face, then at the round bulge of her belly, then out ahead of them towards the road, and then back at her.]

Well what's your problem?

[She doesn't really have a choice in the matter! Her car's in the shop, she needs to get to the hospital, she'd have hitched a ride on a garbage truck if she had to. As Mia rides out the contraction, she hears her co-passenger's question and slowly glares at him. Is he serious?]

You wouldn't know it by looking at me, but I'm in labor right now! Thanks for asking! [aaand another contraction, this one's...three minutes, maybe less after that last one.]

[He pulls a disgusted face and squirms in his seat, trying to make a little extra space between them, like she might give birth right then and there all over him.]

So what're you doin' here? You shoulda called a bloody ambulance!

[A beat, then, with a mildly panicked expression:]

You're not gonna...right now, right?

I panicked, okay?! [Come on, she thought she'd have more time. Everyone says the first baby takes the longest, she thought she'd be able to wait for Diego so they could go to the hospital together. Clearly, that wasn't the way to go!]

I just might! You'd better pray my water doesn't-

[Tonight is just not her night. She doesn't even finish the sentence before her water does indeed break.]

[And that has him pressing even further against his side of the cab, like he can slide right through the window if he only pushes hard enough. He doesn't know the first thing about babies. Any part of them. They're breakable and they scream and smell and cry and they're a mess of sticky wetness and he just...doesn't want anything to do with it. Let alone delivering one. Violence and death and explosions and broken bones and blood? That he's cool with. Robbing banks? He fucking excels. Making gadgets? He doesn't suck completely. This? Hell no.]

Fucking Christ, woman. Can you...not? That is not what I need to be doin' today.

[Ugh.

Because he doesn't know what else to do, he suddenly surges forward to shout at the cab driver to go faster. Threatening violence if he doesn't, even, complete with reaching through the window to grab him by the jacket, shaking if necessary; he doesn't care, he just needs to not be involved in this.]

And this is what I needed?! [her skirt is soaked, the contractions are coming faster and stronger, she's not sure how much longer the baby will stay put; all she knows is that once the water's broken it's over.

And unless the cab driver has a secret degree in obstetrics, if things get any worse... No, this dangerous-looking man is not touching me, or my kid!

She silently curses Diego for having to work late. Couldn't he have just let one of the newbie lawyers they're training handle this? Then again, neither of them expected her to go into labor tonight. They had another week, the doctor had said.

What a liar.

A particularly painful contraction makes her grip her belly and let out a frustrated scream.]

[He jerks when she screams, a reflexive reaction that twists him awkwardly in the space and has him cursing loudly when there's a sharp pull in his muscles to go with it. He whacks his head on the way out too, which pulls another curse out of him and he scowls as he rocks back into the seat. He has no control over the situation now, he can see that, what small measure of it he had to start with is draining away grain by grain, and he points a finger at her accusingly, like there's anything she can really do to mitigate or fix things.]

Don't you dare, I swear to God. You...stay.

[He's not sure where to point, so he waves his finger at the whole of her to cover all the bases.]

No screaming, no crying, no...Alien impressions. Jimbo is driving as fast as he can because if he doesn't he's getting somethin' very sharp somewhere it shouldn't be, so we are going to get to the hospital and you're going to do all your...baby stuff there. Okay?

I hope for all of our sake you're right! [the words are sharp, almost growling as she presses her legs together, panting deeply...the urge to push is building slowly but it's building and she prays she can resist it until they get to the hospital. Which isn't that far away at this point, but babies have a mind of their own...]

[Jupiter felt a pang of sympathy for Mars' plight. Of course, they had all been in similar situations in the past. Trips and slip ups came with the job. That didn't make it look any less painful though.

Her hand slides down to grip Rei's and she gives it a little supportive squeeze.]

That's a bonus yes, I think we should worry more about getting you home than about who saw what.

[She takes a small look around the area.]

I think I'll have to carry you.
