Some characters can't just rush into things, especially things like love or sex. These characters need a partner who will take things slow, explore each other fully before taking the leap. They need someone they can trust.

[ Four months.

Four months they've been looking — checking every crime syndicate in Russia, connecting with potential leads in Germany, kicking down doors of mob bosses in France — and every single lead, every promising trail, has dissolved away to nothing. It's not that he expected this to be easy — far from it — but it just seemed like there should have been something. There should have been a footprint, a residue, a trace of him in the world, but still they've come up empty every single time, and the strain of it is starting to show.

He hasn't spoken of it at all, of course. Every time he's got some determined little soundbite about how something will come up, complete with new plans of attack. There's never even a hint of him giving up, because in his mind it just isn't an option: he'll do this for the rest of his life, if he has to. But despite his determination, every day sees his shoulders a little bit lower and his face a little more drawn. At night he barely sleeps, stepping out of their ratty motels to continue the search as Sam gets the rest he himself waves off as something he'll catch up on later. As weeks stretch to months to talks less and less, spending more time to himself while paying lip service to an optimistic belief that a concrete lead will present itself any day now. Every day he rots inside a little bit more, and every day he wraps the wounds in a fresh bandage of determination that allows his feet to keep moving.

Bucky needs him. That's enough to keep going for one more day.

They're in Vienna today, and Steve is speaking with a man outside a cafe. His German is still pretty good, enough to navigate through Austrian German in a way that makes himself understood; nevertheless, their informant has no news. With a slow exhale through his nose he returns to Sam, settling down at their table on the sidewalk. ]

No hits on the files we asked him to flag. He said he might have something new tomorrow.

[ The man had sounded doubtful about that, but he's willing to fudge the truth for things to briefly feel less hopeless. ]

You should get headed back to the hotel; we've got an early day tomorrow, if we're gonna check whatever leads he might pull up and still catch our flight.

[ It's as close to an outright dismissal as Steve gets: the day's been yet another bust, and honestly, he just wants to be alone. ]

Luna had been at the manor for about a month at this point and was loving every second of it. She had been quickly accepted into the group after she and Kevin gave a quick and dirty version of how they met and him coming to find her in Scotland. They even had an actual date via the movies and ice cream (and nobody asked about her scars, the one time someone did ask they fell for the kitchen accident ruse). But now Luna was ready to take a leap into couplehood but the manor was still rearing its ugly head and she knew Kevin's past was just as dark as her own. But she did take one tiny leap, not using a spell to hide the large scar on her neck when it was only them. "You know something, there is this part of me not wanting to go back to the Wizarding World just yet." her way of saying she could extend her time stateside by at least a few more weeks.
