Didn't sound like-- had Keelan's heart racing faster than the initial fear of their escape being a gamble. It was acknowledgement of this being a rouse. Were they already doomed? Would they be caught? Could they really make their escape?
A million more questions surged through his mind, even as Fae sprang to life and started overtaking both guards. It rooted him, unable to tear his golden eyes away from the action in front of him. For more than one reason.
Watching Fae was almost mesmerizing. He moved so fluidly and easily that he wanted to take his comment back earlier about having done a horrible job at keeping himself from being captured. Right now, it was obvious how much it must have taken to subdue him. Even though he'd gotten the drop on the two guards, he was handling them in a way that made it look effortless. He imagined that there must have been more, a circle of men tasked with taking a single person down, and to Keelan that was admirable. It was also inspiring, his fear sliding back into the depths where it came. Around someone like Fae, he knew he would be safe and was being shown as much. The problem laid with Keelan being the weak link, but with such an inspirational display before him and a willingness to never come back, he would do everything in his own power to hold himself up and not rely so heavily on the beautiful, savage man currently fighting to free them both.
He hadn't known his hands were balled into fists of his own until Fae was done, grabbing both their bundle and tugging him into motion. It didn't take much to get him to move along, his feet heavy and hesitant for only the first couple of steps. Then, once they were over the threshold of his door it was easier.
"This way!" He called, taking the lead. Keelan had only been out of his room a small number of times, but he remembered the path like it was marked on the inside of his eyelids. It was hard not to remember a path out, when you dreamed about one day finally walking to freedom. It was also hard not to remember the path, since any time he'd seen it, it lead him to some of his most rough nights in Zeke's service, catering to whole parties of perverse men who wanted a piece of him.
A shiver of recollection ran through him as he shifted to run down hallways and stairs, guiding them to the only exit he knew. Only to find that it was locked, Keelan throwing his weight against it with a frustrated cry when the door wouldn't budge.
"This is the only way I know!" He growled, jerking the handle with a rough tug, as if brute force alone would make the door move.
I do! I also like the tag, but it's nicer to know you're okay haha. Stupid matthew
