Jim has no idea if Chris got his message a month ago-- the subspace channels have been wonky at best this far out, and yeah, he resent it when they arrived at Yorktown, finally within relay range of civilization, but since then he's been. You know. Out. Getting his ship destroyed. Losing people. Saving people. Shit like that. It crossed his mind once, briefly, while running through the Enterprise's dark, twisted hallways fleeing phaser fire and its own fiery implosion, that if he lived, Pike was going to kick his ass. Very little besides the crisis before him entered his mind after that, though.

So he's almost startled when he walks out of his last debriefing and discovers that one of his missed messages is from the man himself, telling him to roll his ass over to his quarters as soon as he's free. Jim blinks for a moment and then feels a rush of affection-relief at the thought of his mentor having come all the way out here (even if it is to kick his ass), but then it's immediately steamrolled by Aw fuck he got that maudlin 'maybe I should just quit' subspace message after all. FFffuucking hell.

But he's lived through worse, so he does as instructed, pinging a door in the admiralty housing when he arrives and standing outside in formal dark blues, running a hand through his hair, holding his hat in the other.

He should have died. Instead, Wash wakes up in a military base with a bunch of blue and red idiots standing over him, and a hell of a headache. That headache being Church attempting to fit all his bits back together. It was... confusing to say the least but probably made about as much sense as anything else in his life.

Caboose has just left after subjecting Wash to another enthusiastic ramble about how now he'll have two best friends. Wash's headache is about a million times worse by now. He can feel Church pulsing in the back of his head.

[ this one seems to be like the jojo he knows, and dio feels enough in him to be possessive, but the appearance and gait aren't in line with what he remembers of the jojo he's preoccupied himself with that he's a bit thrown off with the comparisons.

there's a sour look on his face (when isn't there one - but this one is more angry than the usual - ) as he glares at him, and when dio speaks, he's more than irritated, though he does his best to present himself as calmly as he can - the victorian lord/tyrant of the joestar manor as he had been in jonathan's youth, that anger and arrogance never leaving him.

(he is miles away from the way he will be able to lure someone into a sense of calm just with his words, and standing in joseph's shadow is a position he's not really interested in occupying for long, and yet here they were. dio, for once, is painfully aware that somehow, this jojo has some kind of knowledge he doesn't know, and that is unacceptable.) ]

After Saunders pulls the trigger, Topher is left standing there, absolutely dumbfounded and unable to process what has happened. His mind was still reeling from having kissed this beautiful, perfect (slightly crazy) girl not even five minutes ago and now he felt her warm blood splatter across his face.

He's never been the type to excel in these types of situations. He's never been good at dealing with trauma. This definitely falls in that category. But if he's brave enough, he can save her. There is no other option. He dragged her into this mess. He stupidly brought her here because it wasn't just about Caroline's wedge. If she died today, it would be his fault and Topher would never, ever forgive himself for that.

Immediately, his fingers go to her neck, gently checking for a pulse. It's faint, but it's there. He can see where the bullet entered and exited her skull. The left side of her brain. The damage might take away so much that makes her her but if she lives, if she survives, he can fix that. There's got to be a Bennett back-up locked away in the depths of D.C. He can rewire around the damage. He had managed to rewire Paul with less real estate than he'd be working with on Bennett. She just has to have the strength to live.

"Bennett," he calls her name, his voice shaking and pleading. One of his hands falls to her knee so he can jostle her slightly without moving her head too much, "Bennett, can you hear me? Please tell me you can hear me, please."

If she can speak, if she's still conscious (even barely so), then she's still got some language processing power in that hemisphere. Which is so, so crucial.
