rain rain go away;

the rain meme
Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.
Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.
Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

intensity
1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.
2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.
3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.
4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!
5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!
prompts
1. A DARK, STORMY NIGHT ☂ You know all those stories that start off with a stormy night before something goes wrong: a murder, an attack by ninjas, a crime. It is one of the best known clichés in the world, and you’re stuck in the middle of it.
2. HUMIDITY ☂ It’s that time of the year again when the humidity rises and the rain has two options: make it worse or make it go away. Good luck getting the latter.
3. GRAY RAIN OF DEPRESSION ☂ We all know this one. Stuck in the middle of no where, or right after an argument, or something that leads to angst, the rain decides to express someone’s feelings in a physical form, serious or over the top.
4. QUIET MORNING ☂ Nothing to do, nowhere to be… sometimes the rain is a welcomed addition to a quiet day. Gives you an excuse to stay in, curl up in a warm blanket and a book, maybe a loved one or a cup of hot chocolate. With sprinkles.
5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!
6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.
7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.
8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?
9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!
10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.
11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!
12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.
13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.
14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.
15. WILD CARD ☂ Was there something I missed? Did you want to roll again or choose your own adventure? Go for it!

He wonders, wistfully, if the bunny will last longer in her life or if he will. It's a longing thought, realizing that they've already been here longer than he'd thought they'd be able to and that Voltron is always on call.]
I have to share a coop with a ninja and a time hopper? [He frowns and gives it some thought but then nods. All right. But what kind of dinosaur? Because, as a bunny, I might be allergic.
no subject
Yeah you do! Genji and Tracer are nice, though. They play games with me sometimes.
[ Genji especially, having been a bit of a gamer himself in his youth. Hana steers her avatar back to her farm, and enters the coop in question. Sure enough, there are a few chickens, some ducks, a dinosaur, and now three bunnies including the one named Shiro. ]
I don't know what kind of dinosaur it is? That one's Lúcio because he made me promise he'd be a dinosaur. He's really nice so, you guys are definitely gonna get along. No allergies allowed!
if memebers of her team aren't listening at the door I will be very surprised lol
Yeah. [His eyebrows come down and his eyes narrow for a moment before:] I have no idea what kind of dinosaur that's supposed to be.
[Mentally he marks down the names. Genji, Tracer, Lúcio. Friends of hers and people that are obviously precious to her. He recognizes them as Overwatch because he's studied up on the group but now their names are more important to him. Those three names at least. He watches the bunnies bop lightly in place while he thinks about it.]
No allergies then. But I want my rabbit to get special head pats or treats or whatever it is. He'll get lonely if you leave him alone in the hutch too long.
she'll shoo them away if they are
Shiro, please. I love all of my cute animals equally. No one's gonna get lonely 'cause I'm the best farmer around!
[ Well, the best virtual farmer, anyway. But having given her animals names of people she cares about does sort of motivate her to make sure they're always doing well in the game. And as far as real life goes... No one would really be able to tell by the way she carries herself and her attitude, but she's quite protective of her teammates. It's why she tries to put herself on the front line during missions. ]
'is that a man's voice'why is that a man's voice'is he nice'he'd better be nice'when can we meet him
He probably shouldn't keep finding her so adorable. But her enthusiasm for the game - and her determination about being the best virtual farmer - is.]
Best farmer, huh? Okay. Show me your farm. And tell me what you had to do to set it up, all right? You never know. I might want to try farming too. Might as well learn from the best.
get rekt, shiro
No way! How are you gonna have time to do all this while you're out in space?
[ And speaking of-- ]
I didn't know you were going to be around still. Did you sneak away again?
no subject
[The rest of her question though...
the smile disappears and for a moment he glances at the window. It's impossible to see the stars through the violent storm outside - but that doesn't mean they're not there. And he's never been so aware of just what hid around those stars. He looks back at the screen and his mech hand closes for a moment, a slow, subconscious gesture.]
Soon enough. When I do go - I won't be back any time soon. [So much. Still so much to do. They're stealing this time, him and his team. But as far as he's concerned his team has earned it and he's defended their right to it. He looks back at her and offers a tired smile.] So yeah, sneaking way whenever I can right now.
no subject
Shouldn't you be sneaking away to visit your relatives, then? [ Then, with an attempt to be teasing: ] Or your significant other?
no subject
My family's sleeping right now. I just came from there. [Just a hop across the puddle, so to speak even though it was a great deal more complicated than that. But Shiro's time with the space program, and his recognition since, have given him a few strings to pull. His eyes find hers and don't look away. The same smile crooks his lips again, aware of the limitations.]
Hana... when would I ever have the time for a significant other? That's a little too long to expect anyone to wait.
no subject
[ her head snaps around to look back at him, an almost wild curiosity in her eyes as she gasps. ] There's someone out there? In space?
[ She is most definitely just toying with him, now. But still, part of her is morbidly curious. What if Shiro's dating an alien. ]
no subject
and then his eyebrows almost jump into his hairline as she spins back around and he sees that look in her eyes. Whatever he was expecting -
that question wasn't it. For a minute his mind blanks.
And then he laughs.
It's a tip his head back, close his eyes, full chest laugh, one that's nothing but pleasure. It's not at the notion of finding anyone in space. It turns out the galaxy is full of other beings. But its - so very far away from anything he's had the least amount of time to think about or concentrate on while he's been there - ]
No. [He shakes his head, laughter still in his voice and around his eyes.] No, definitely not. I've been a little too busy trying not to get shot at.
[Though... to be fair...]
That's really more Lance's style.
no subject
Okay, okay, I guess that makes sense! I bet you have like, a fan club out there though.
[ As do the rest of the Voltron team she's heard about. ]
no subject
Her... drawing him out of who he was for everyone else into who he was when he wasn't being there for everyone else.]
Maybe. Yeah, probably. [His grin was wide and relaxed and utterly caught in the moment and her as he relaxed against the beanbag and shook his head a little. Exhaled something that held the echo of laughter still.] There are plenty of people - beings - that are happy with what we did. Are doing.
[It's you. The Champion...
His next exhale was softer but, in this moment, right here, it didn't hurt. Fan club... He tipped his head back to look at her.]
Nobody asks for our autographs or takes our pictures or sends us home baked goods in the mail like you probably get though.
no subject
[ she says it with a practiced ease of someone who probably says that on a regular basis, and an easy, confident smile. Still, it's due in part to what Shiro's said that she's smiling, that familiar and relatable feeling that--beyond just having fans, people out there need them and appreciate their help. Hana may treat her work a lot like it's a game to win, but at the end of the day it's that feeling that gets her through. She imagines Shiro must feel that, too, except he's defending much more than she is. In light of that... ]
Hey, what if I asked for your autograph? Could I have one?
no subject
And she probably gets underestimated too because she's still young. He gets that.
So he grins back at her reminder and hums a content sound, not disagreeing in the least. She's certainly secured a special place in his world.
Then he snorted and laughed again, something closer to a chuckle this time. A shoulder rolled.]
It seems like too little but - sure? If you wanted it. You should ask for something better though.
no subject
What could be better than an autograph? [ Equal parts curious and teasing. Because sure, she could ask for, like, his shirt or something and she's sure people would go nuts over it, but-- ] One sec. B-R-B.
[ yes, she really says bee-ar-bee. She stands up from her bean bag, padding her way over to her desk where she grabs something that looks like a journal off from the top of it as well as a pen (pink, of course) before she comes back and sits down once more. Then she opens to a spread in the journal that's already filled with several autographs and little notes, mostly from other Overwatch members. So many of them are pretty much celebrities, after all, even after the organization fell into disgrace. Tracer is there, Lúcio is there, Junkrat's ridiculously messy name is there, and ones from Reinhardt, and Mei and Genji and pretty much everyone. It's highly likely that some of these people were coerced or pestered into signing. But hey, at least Shiro isn't. She points to an open spot on the pages. ]
Look, there's a spot just for you!
no subject
She keeps distinguished company. He remembers idolizing some of those names as heroes when he was a teen and his thumb brushes idly across one. And looks at the spot she's pointed to. A little awkwardly, and it has nothing to do with the color, he takes the pen and balances the book on his thigh.]
Am I supposed to write something along with my signature?
no subject
Up to you! See that one? [ she points to Symmetra's, which is simply a neat signing of the woman's name. ] That's from Symmetra. She didn't write a note, but that's okay.
You know what? I'll go get snacks and you can decide what you wanna do while I'm gone!
[ And before she can give Shiro a chance to protest or ask any more questions, she's up again and shuffling over to her door, glancing back at him over her shoulder with another smile before she pulls the door open and steps out.
She's gone a little longer than when she had retrieved a towel for him, but after the five or so minutes that she is, there's another muffled conversation happening somewhere outside her door, something that sounds a lot like Hana explaining once more that a friend is over only with more animation and admitting he had gone the sneaky in but that it was "no big deal because he's cool" and her walking away mid-conversation again to walk back into her room. She's holding a tray with two cups of tea and a bag of biscuits and a big smile on her face. ]
Didja figure it out?
no subject
Times like these he really wishes some of his grandfather's poetry had leaked down to him.
Night and morning poems between a man and a woman used to be a thing in his culture...
He's still finishing by the time he hears the muffled conversation outside the door and his lips crook up apologetically. He - likes causing her problems. At least if they're like this.
He's probably not going to get out of here easily the same way he came in.
His face is nothing but curious about what she's got for food though once she's coming back in her door and her book is neatly set on the console with the pen tucked in it. He stands up to help with the tray.]
A little.
[It's just his signature, crisp and slopeing with four neatly printed words nestled underneath.]
Shirogane Takashi
for those rainy nights
no subject
I like it. Thanks for the autograph!
[ Then, she gestures back to where they had been sitting before with every intent to resume the game and continue showing Shiro how awesome of a virtual farmer she is, only this time they've got tea and biscuits and it's going to be awesomer.
That's what she thinks, at least, until a flash of lightning almost seems to strike right outside of Hana's window just as she's taken her seat, making her shoulders tense up, and then the room goes dark. ]
No way--
[ And that's all she manages to get out before the thunder makes its expected arrival, loud and rumbling and so strong it almost seems to shake the building--at which point, Hana just yelps and curls up, covering her ears with her hands. ]
no subject
Her smile says that he did all right.
Which has him relaxing the little bit he'd tensed and following her waved direction, sitting back down next to the beanbag, setting the tray in front of his folded legs.
Tea sounds... just about perfect on a night like tonight. It will help take the chill off him. But even more... tea with his grandfather on rainy nights, and afternoons for that matter, had been a tradition and it still filled a warm place in his soul. He was just about to pick up a cup to offer to her once she was settled when the lightning blazed -
and the power went out.
Had she saved her game before she left?
The thunder rolls next though and it fills up his chest like a great barreling wave, lifting him and resonating. He loves the thunder in his chest, love the way it pounds nagadou daiko drums through his blood and tells him he's alive.
- except Hana literally yelps and curls into herself and his eyes go wide. It's not that dark, that he's going to miss something like that, and he's got a knee under himself immediately, automatic readiness to move on a threat.
Except - its just thunder.
She's scared of thunder.
Gentle, slow, he slips his arms around her, tucking over her a little, chin over the top of her head. It's much more physical than they've been before and its probably too personal but -
it's a protective move and a protecting one, sheltering her, not from a storm that can't hurt her but from a world outside and whatever it brought with it. Gentle but firm he tucks her into his chest and hums, low, low in his throat so it vibrates though him and into her as well.]
Not ready for that, huh?
no subject
She wasn't expecting it, to say the least, but... she can't be mad about it. Somehow, it makes her feel safe. His grip is both gentle and strong, comforting. She can feel his voice, not just hear it, and it's soothing. She doesn't know if it's because it's Shiro that she feels that way, if anyone else could have held her at that moment and she'd feel better, but she won't complain.
She will, however, feel a little lame. At length, she shakes her head at his question. ]
Nope. I was just surprised... Um. You can let go now.
[ She's not entirely sure, either, if that's what she really wants, but this--it's awkward, right? She's supposed to be this fearless person but what she was totally uncool, just now. ]
no subject
but because he understand what sudden, incapacitating terror feels like.
He's been there too.
So he simply wraps her close in his arms and lets her have whatever she needs, lets her take as much time as she needs. Fear doesn't make sense. But that doesn't make it any less real.
When she shakes her head and says he can let go however, he does. He's already pushed into her personal space with his instinctive move and the last thing he wants to do is make her feel uncomfortable. His arms relax and let go and his hand strokes her hair, just once, before that retreats as well. He doesn't shift away from her though, still a solid presence in the darkness while the storm shakes the window, one hand on the chair behind her so she's still in the shelter of his body even if they're not touching anymore.
He realizes he wants to offer her his hand, to hold. But that's being physical once again and besides - its his mech hand. His voice stays calm and relaxed, a half-note lower than usual. There's no judgement in it.]
Not a fan of storms, huh?
no subject
Still, Shiro's own presence in that moment was--well, unexpected, but not unappreciated. In fact, something pulls at her when he lets go, as if telling her that it's okay to let her guard down. She sees that he doesn't completely move away, staying close to her and almost acting like a wall between her and the storm outside, and--it's nice. They barely know each other, but there's something about Shiro's demeanor that makes her feel like he understands exactly what she's going through even without her uttering a word. And it makes sense. He was the pilot of a mission that went terribly wrong and was missing in action for a year.
Hana lets her hands fall from the sides of her face. Where Shiro's arms had wrapped around her, she now substitutes with her own arms, shrinking a little bit more into herself. ]
They're not my favorite. [ And that's probably as close as she'll get to admitting that storms freak her out. ] It's just... so loud, you know? And then the power goes out like this. Huge pain in the butt.
[ She casts him a sidelong glance. ] I still can't believe you were walking around in all of that. Wasn't it... scary?
no subject
He doesn't think less of her for her fear. In fact, he finds her fierceness and brashness that much more endearing, because this fear now means she's fought for those. Means she knows vulnerability and she doesn't let it stop her, or even slow her down. Not for long. But - everyone has to splinter sometimes.
The way she hugs herself and shrinks makes him ache to wrap his arms around her again. Because - no one should be their own protector when they don't have to be. And no one should have to sit alone when their personal storm comes. He's had to do it often enough himself. He's sure she has too. And his hand reaches for her without thinking, even if all it does it cup her far arm gently. Not an embrace, but more than simply sitting without touching her at all.
He thinks - he thinks she's trusting him with a great deal, to admit to him what she is. And he thinks she's admitting more to him than she's willing to put into words. Is it all loud noises? Or something special about the thunder? And is the lack of power additional fear or just the human fear of darkness and lack of connection to the rest of the world? He's sat in his own darkness, cut off from everything else listening to his fear outside the door. It doesn't matter if they were different kinds. The feeling is the same. His head dips, bangs over his forehead for a moment.
How vulnerable? She's given him a glimpse past her guards -
how vulnerable are they going to be to each other?
He takes the step even if his body doesn't move. Offering his own without asking her to trade. Simply giving it to her because she's vulnerable and fighting and brave in the dark.]
You know I was missing for over a year. I know the official report but you probably believe it about as much as I do. There are lots of stories going around about what happened, I know.
[He pauses. Sorts through his thoughts while the thunder rolls at his back and thrums in his chest. Listens to the pelting rain. Remembers - ]
I was kept in an alien prison. It was - bad. I lost track of how long. I lost a lot of memories. Everything bled together in that place and nothing ever changed. [He pulls an inhale in and lifts his face to look at hers, watching the pale curve of it in the unreliable light.]
There's no rain in space, Hana. Day in and day out, no wind, no grass, no life. The first time it rained after I got out - I almost lost my mind. I'd never felt each drop of rain so distinctly before. It overwhelms but - that overwhelming drives back all those memories of dark and silence and stale air. It cleans all of it away and fills me up with something sharp and clear and real and it reminds me that I'm not there anymore. I'm here. [Tender, his thumb rubbed against her arm as his eyes lifted for hers.]
I'm here.
