It was years ago when the Hale Family originally vowed to protect King Stilinski and his family. However, the vow of celibacy Derek took of his own free will to reassure the King that Derek would never be distracted from his job, unlike his older sister Laura, was seeming difficult to uphold. It wasn't just the hunting master's sister that bothered him during his beginning years as a guard to the king but the prince himself was becoming an issue.

It wasn't anything he couldn't handle though... at least he thought. He nearly spent every waking moment with the young prince and his friends, keeping the prince safe from outside forces. Well... making sure the prince would be safe from himself too. The prince had a tendency of being clumsy. And he and his friends liked to make dumb decisions.

It wasn't just the physical attraction that Derek was fighting off but it was the emotional attachment he was trying to keep at bay. The prince was smart, funny, snarky, kind... and unbelievably handsome. Today he was watching the young prince complete his schooling for the day in the prince's private chambers.

Stiles was nearly done with his work when he started to feel it, he was getting antsy and once it started he had trouble stopping it. His leg started bouncing as he read the same sentence for the third time, watching Derek out of the corner of his eye. Derek Hale...his loyal watchdog. He never much enjoyed having a constant watcher...they tended to be bossy and yell at him a lot. Derek though, it helped the man was closer in age but he felt different that the others. Less like a keeper and more like a safety net. Anytime he stumbled, anytime he suddenly found the world closing in on him and suddenly it was difficult to breathe, the other man was there. He never seemed to judge Stiles and didn't resent him for being royalty like he felt a few of the servants did. Also....the man was ridiculously handsome.

Stiles grinned, shoving is book away suddenly. "I think I could use a break..."

Derek gave the Prince a little nod, smiling softly. "Only a short one. You know your father wants you to keep on your studies," he reminds the young prince, looking over from his station at the by the open balcony.

The protector wasn't one to judge the prince. He knew the young heir to the throne needed breaks from time to time. And he wasn't going to stop him from taking them, unlike his actual teacher. He knew the boy liked to have his fun. And Derek would allow fun. Fun within reason though.

"My father wants me to do a lot of things I have no intention of doing," he pointed out, happily pushing himself away from his desk and slamming his book shut. It was so much easier when Derek let him do as he liked, it meant he had to whine a lot less and nobody liked a whiner.

Studies instantly forgotten he slowly moved to stand beside Derek, mimicking his serious stance before looking over the balcony. "Anything interesting?"

Derek looked the Prince over, smiling softly at him. "Besides a new trade ship coming in from the Southern country, no," Derek informed the Prince, giving him another glance before looking back out over the city and harbor. He should probably stop thinking about the prince and how good he looked at the moment, the honey colored trim to his clothes making his eyes shine bright.

"So in other words no, nothing interesting," he sighed dramatically, walking over and leaning against the other man as if he were a pillar. "I'm bored, Derek...can't we find something fun to do?"

Close... too close... But he didn't matter. He could ignore it. And so he did, standing a little taller since the little Prince leaned against him. "Fun? To you, fun means sneaking into something and getting in trouble," he says, sparing a glance at Stiles for a moment.

"Not on purpose," he quickly pointed out, "just get bored is all. I mean don't you?" he took a step back so he could look the other man in the eye. "Come on, big guy. You gotta get bored standing around all day making sure I don't trip holding a pair of scissors. Don't you ever want to go do something for yourself?"

Those big, bright doe eyes were going to be the death of him. He let out a deep sigh. "Occasionally I do. But my job is to make sure you're safe. That's what I do."

And it was for himself in some selfish way. He was making sure the Prince was safe. Making sure he could stay by him. He loved the Prince, and he loved to be near him.

Stiles cocked his head, seeing something in the taller man's eyes, some sort of longing, assumed it was for the life he was missing while being Stiles' guard. "You're allowed to...I mean you're not my slave Derek. If there was ever anything you wanted to do I'd make sure it happened. We're friends...right?" he asked, giving a small smile. "That's what friends do."

He briefly looked down for a moment, smiling softly. "Yes, my Prince. We're friends. But I'm fine. I promise you I am. I want to be here to protect you and that's where I'm going to stay. If that's alright with you," he said with a smile. It was hard, and he hated being close without being able to touch but he couldn't push for it. He swore he wouldn't become too infatuated with the Prince.

He sighed dramatically and shrugged, "I guess, if that's how you want to spend your life Derek...but don't blame me when you get bored of this life. When I become King...if I become king, I'll make sure you get to do anything you want," he promised with a smile.

It took delicacy to finesse. It took pushing and prodding and more than a few panicked phone calls at the last moment. It took nervously changing through almost every shirt he owned, frantically texting every few seconds, downing mints like his last meal.

And, amazingly, it had been going pretty well in spite of that.

They're starting light. They're starting with things that feel normal. They go to a restaurant they've been to before. They wander absently in the park as if it's any other evening, as if they might well break away abruptly to live their own lives or head down to join the rest of their friends. They watch a dumb movie they've watched a hundred times before in Merdraut's little apartment.

But maybe they flirt a little at dinner. Maybe their fingers brush together absently in the park. And certainly they sit together as casually as they know how on Merdraut's bed to watch the movie.

Maybe he's letting one hand spider casually over to hold Galahad's.

They're starting light. It's a good thing, with Merdraut so hesitant and Galahad so tentative. It's nice to do things normally.

It's even nicer to flirt, just a little. To let their fingers bump together carefully in the park.

And, when they're sitting together on Merdraut's bed, it's especially nice to let his own hand settle carefully in the other young man's grip.

He'll do his best to keep on as though nothing's changed, but he does shoot a smile his way eventually. He can't help it.

It isn't as if the movie is so gripping. It isn't as if they can pretend, holding hands delicately like this, that they aren't in theory doing something more than hanging out with a friend.

They've done all the things he usually doesn't do. They've skipped, thus far, all the things he usually does do.

Still, oddly not unpleasant.

That's the big part of trying 'dating,' after all. True, it's probably better for both of them that things are slow for the moment, but that hasn't stopped him from deciding that this is really more about Galahad's inexperience than his own nerves.

It helps the nerves to pretend, after all.
