It's one thing to be in a relationship with someone; it's another beast entirely to be on the exact same page, the same wavelength as them, almost like you're the same person - two halves to a whole. As far as the two of you go, you're both. Maybe being in a romantic relationship may be anathema, but you don't care. This is just another way for you to be completely in sync.

Force & Calm: Every yin needs a yang. Power is nice, but you can't just turn yours off, you have to have someone - a very specific someone - defuse you.
Healer & Fighter: Violence has the nasty habit of often causing injury. It's beneficial to have your own personal medic around.
Brain & Brawn: Point them in the right direction and they'll destroy everything in your path.
Powers Intertwined: Your ability requires the ability of the other person to work correctly.
Weapon: If someone has to use you, it might as well be them.
Shared Trauma: No one understands what you've been through except them, because your past is the same.
Telepathically Connected: You're of the same mind, quite literally.
Team Mates: Some people just work better together, and out of your big team, you two work seamlessly as a subunit.
Part of Each Other: There's a part of them that lives in you, whatever that may be. It's hard to stay away when that lost piece is constantly calling out.
Tragedy: When your other half is in danger of being taken away, what will you do?
[They'd reached their destination. The cottage. The sea. The outskirts of a small town. They had run, and traveled, and seen the world, and everything was beautiful and important and perfect again. And there were dogs!
Another couple with a dog passes them as they walk on the beach holding hands.]
Oleta. [It still feels so wonderful to say that name again, to say it to her.] Do you think we should get a dog?
[ It's still easy to get overwhelmed. Remembering is overwhelming but not in a bad way. The kind of overwhelming that's warm in her chest and lets her forget the things that hurt her rather than the things that heal her.
She smiles, and that sometimes feels foreign too. This time though, it feels natural. Oleta sounds like music to her ears. ]
Hester. [ She'll say it, over and over, until they're old and gray and gone. She squeezes her hand, head tipping toward her conspiratorially. ] No, I don't.
[Even more wonderful than saying Oleta's name is hearing her own name on the other woman's lips. Warm. Not shouting it out in frustration and terror, but softly. Just to say it. To have it be heard.
She lofts her eyebrows in the beat, but the follow-up makes her smile wide.] Of course, what an excellent idea!
[ She's been eased, now. Somewhat. She's still too fiery for this world, too dangerous in a way no one understands but Hester. But when it's them against everything, she still feels like she can breathe.
Hester's smile makes her own spread wider. ] I was hoping you'd agree. [ Knew she'd agree. Things are as they should be, after all. ] What kind of dogs though, is the real question.
[Hester has started to believe that sometimes- just sometimes- violence is necessary. That it can be a tool for change. They can't make those changes with only the two of them, but they can learn to create their own space in this world. Their own freedom.
And that's what they have done.
She entwines her fingers more firmly with Oleta's.] Cute and friendly ones. [Pleasant ones.]
[ These days, Oleta is quieted. Gentled, perhaps. Not healed but better. Her fierceness comes from her dedication to Hester now, and if Hester is safe (which she is) then Oleta is happy (which she is).
She pauses though, squeezing Hester's hand tightly and turning toward her, pressing their foreheads together. ]
Like you, Hester. Cute and friendly. [ Pleasant. Adored. ]
[They've both gotten away with something. Something that had seemed impossible, and yet-- and yet here they were.
Somehow, even after all the things she'd done, Oleta thought Hester was good and special and lovely. That made her feel warm.]
Certainly. There's a shelter nearby we can look at.
[They were still careful about leaving paper trails, still paid for everything they could in cash, but they had fake IDs now, certainly well-made enough to convince an animal shelter employee.]
