The HOLY GRAIL WAR Meme

Seven Masters, magi of the present day. Seven Servants, heroes of days past.One Holy Grail, granting whomever claims it a wish. Only one team of Master and Servant may claim it.
Who will it be?
For those unfamiliar with Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Zero, you can find a better explanation of the Holy Grail War here. (Note: The Holy Grail War in Fate/EXTRA functions in a dramatically different way, and one not followed for purposes of this meme.)

Instructions
1. Comment with your character. In the subject line, put that character's name, canon, and which role (Master, Servant, or either) you would like them to fulfill. Add other preferences if you would like. (NOTE: If your character can fill the role of Servant, I suggest you state which class(es) -- Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, or Berserker -- they fall into.)
2. Reply to others' comments. Pick your character's role (and the other character's if they list "Either" as their preference), then use the RNG to pick a scenario that fits the two characters' roles.
3. Enjoy! Though there might be triggers, depending on how the prompts are interpreted.

TWO MASTERS

1. Battle. Who says that Servants get to have all the fun? After all, most Masters try to kill each other, too. Whatever the circumstances, the two of you are locked in a fight. Neither of you are willing to use your Command Spells just yet, so no Servants here. Just two magi duking it out.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action aginst it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. Protection. Uh-oh! One of you has lost your Servant! Unfortunately, there's no way you'd get to the church safely on your own, so the other one will help you get there! Or maybe you don't trust the priest presiding over the Holy Grail War and are giving shelter to them yourself? Given their track record, no one would blame you.

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. You, Too? Surprise! You may have been friends before, but you've just discovered that you're both Masters! How will you handle this revelation?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

MASTER AND SERVANT

1. Are You My Master? The summoning is complete. Whether intentional or not, catalyst or not, a magus has summoned a Servant. What kind of meeting was it? Was everything totally under control, or did a hitch occur? Or maybe it happened in the middle of a life-or-death situation!

2. Identity. Either the Servant has flat out told the Master their identity, or they unleashed their Noble Phantasm. Either way, the cat is out of the bag. How will the Master react, now that they know their Servant's name and legend? Will anything change between the two?

3. Battle Aftermath. A battle has just ended. Who participated? Are either of you hurt? Did the Master have to use a Command Spell? Any number of things could have happened here.

4. Discord. Uh-oh. It looks like the Master and the Servant don't get along. Here come the arguments! Don't do something stupid, like waste a Command Spell over a triviality...

5. Love. And then, there's the opposite. Sometimes Masters and Servants fall in love with each other. How will this affect things?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

TWO SERVANTS

1. Battle. This is what usually happens when two Servants meet -- they duke it out. This probably says enough as it is.

2. Alliance. There's a bigger threat out there. Either one Servant is exceptionally powerful, or the situation has changed and the participants need to take action aginst it. One way or another, you're teamed up with one of your rivals for the Holy Grail. How long will this last before you try to stab each other in the back? Or, will something more develop?

3. The Grail Dialogues. Maybe you're not interested in fighting just yet. Maybe you just want to sit down and talk with the other Servant. Find out what they want, what makes them tick. Get some wine while you're at it -- nothing like good wine to go with good talk!

4. Death. One or both of you lay dying...again. It might have been by the other's hand, or by someone else's entirely. How will you spend your last moments in this War in the presence of one of your rivals?

5. Identity. Congratulations, you've just learned each other's identities! Will this change the situation, or will you press onward?

6. Wild Card. Roll again, pick one of the previous options, or make one up!

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

[ As a Master, she's the kind of magus who demands absolute perfection and complete control in everything she does; grumpy as can be, and meticulous to a fault, but a force to be reckoned with, by all counts.

As a Lancer, she's absolutely ruthless and takes no prisoners, throws herself completely into battle regardless of consequences, and treats the War as a matter of pride; her fighting style is cruel, efficient, and no-frills, but she's prone to making impulse decisions. She's a wild one. ]

[As a servant she's exactly what you'd expect from (most) archers. Flighty, egotistical, dangerous. She doesn't necessarily have to obey her master thanks to independent action either. That being said she's actually a fairly laid back person otherwise, mostly interested in indulging in all these new modern conveniences than taking the war seriously, so if you accommodate that you've got a servant geared to kill every divine and supernatural type servant. And that's like 90% of them, so.

As a master she's super ambitious despite being really weird. Expects a lot from her servants but is also friendly and will treat them to nice things during downtime. Probably plans to completely throw the way things work in magi society right on its head...but that's easier said than done.]

[Seriously, though, the Einzberns need to be less creative, because this is yet another AU in which they decided to get creative yet again and summon a non-standard Servant because apparently the vanilla seven options isn't enough for them.

So, as Savior proceeded to chainsaw through Caster's defenses-]

Geez! Did you see that?

[They're two parts of the popcorn.gif brigade, any pretense of attacking basically obliterated by Savior's seven wings and the battle unfurling before them (well, several miles away, really, but it doesn't matter at this point), one which probably has something like One Winged Angel playing in the background as the soundtrack. At this point everyone's various forms of nnnnnnnnngh let's just see how this goes for a bit they're totally into each other why interrupt their heated battle slash possible foreplay. Rider could've sworn that he saw Lancer nope off to that grove over there.] Ha ha, one hit and both of us are done for!

Good grief...magi certainly are troublesome, aren't they?

[She's absolutely using the other servants to take stock of this situation, to be honest. She isn't too bothered; so long as they kept fighting, she had time to think of a plan.

And whatever winged monstrosity this is that's been summoned, she can agree with Astolfo on one thing - there's no sense in trying to fight it. Even with her entire skillset being geared towards fighting something like this...

Well, not yet anyway.]

Hey, Pink Rider. You want to put a stop to this? You want to be the hero?

...

[...]

Sure? [...] Yeah. [SEEMS LEGIT.] Yeah. It might be awkward getting between Savior and Caster- [They have that much UST going. It's like you could slice off pieces of the UST and save it for later. USTcake.] -but it'll be fine. Haha, I might get shot down if I fly between them- boom! [Regrettably, his Master had yet to use a Command Seal to get Astolfo to think through things - his magic resistance meant that his Master would have to use at least two for it to have any effect and was quietly contemplating the merits of maybe trying to shank Saber's Master later and steal whoever that is - and so he's just operating under pure SEEMS LEGIT.]

But somebody probably should before they do anything they regret. Maybe? [His Master'll probably stop it. Maybe. Alternatively, his Master might just be like, "Fuck it. Rider, let's just...just get it over with. Die."]

What? No, no, not now you buffoon. I'm planning long term, you hear me? Long term.

[Wherever they are...on a building probably. Everyone always observes stuff like this on top of buildings, so it's probably a building. Either way she's been seated on the edge of the roof to watch, but she stands up to address the situation. She needs him to not fly out there and die.

...right now.

And when she's up, she grabs his cape and yanks him closer.]

That servant out there is aberrant; simply put, they're cheating. So if they're going to cheat, we're going to cheat.

That also means we're changing our goal here. We aren't fighting to win, we're just fighting to make sure they lose...that'll be our win. Are you following me so far?

[As his Master goes for his third shot of vodka somewhere very far away from where they are-]

Ooooh. [Got it.] Yeah, sure sure! I got it, I got it. I'm following you. [NO HESITATION SEEMS LEGIT.] Ehehe, but I'll leave the plans up to you, okay? It's probably a bad idea to leave it up to me to decide.

Umu! It's only natural; I was scheming something brilliant all along after all. I only need you to be obedient and do what you're told.

[EXPLOSIONS GOING ON IN THE BACKGROUND but she just puts her arm around his shoulder and pulls him closer, like into a two person team huddle.]

Now here's what we're going to do. We're going to kill all of the other servants, save us two. If Saviour kills that caster out there, all the better.

If enough of us die, surely the holy grail will manifest. Eight servants means we can complete it even if we ignore our end boss level opponent out there.

Then with the power of the grail, it'll be a cinch to end this. Brilliant, right? Isn't it? You can praise my genius all you like, you know.

[This is probably playing as the imaginary background music to the fight scene happening over there...but that's over there. And you know what's not over there? The people with survival instincts, that's who.

And when someone who's weaponized a lack of sanity is going fuck no, that's when you know it's bad.]

That's a great plan! It's too bad the other guys have to die for it, but I guess that's what happens when you get summoned into something like this, huh? [This is said less like "Oh no! War is terrible!" and more like "Man, pity we can't go get milkshakes and settle this over Mario Kart, huh?"] But the people who summon something like that probably wouldn't want to talk things over so I guess it happens. Besides-

[Meanwhile, a shipping container got launched and thudded over there, but as that was a ways away (few miles) and the only thing it nearly hit was Lancer (who nobody cares about anyway) he ignored it besides going...]

Phew. Glad that wasn't us.

[ As a Master, she's learning the ropes - she's gotten into this war by accident and is fumbling her way through. She wishes to work together with her Servant and cares about them deeply as a Master, too. Of course, Illya herself doesn't need the grail and once she finds out the truth would want to destroy it.

And as a Caster - her Noble Phantasm consists of Ruby and her Class Cards. She's an "exception" to the normal Servant as the Class Cards can transform her into any Class temporarily, too. Illya is definitely the type to protect her Master and put them over any others if their ideals match; if they clash, expect her to most likely go against them so you might need a Command Seal for that. ]

( Hello! I definitely would be interested in that, yes - of course, Illya would be extremely upset about her own Servant being dead and being wary about forming a contract, but yes, sure, I definitely don't mind. )

[It hadn't necessarily been her fault for her master's death; he'd urged her on to pursue the enemy servant without considering the possibility of an alliance going on behind the scenes. As she'd left her Master's side, it was an easy task for the Assassin class servant of the war to take him down discreetly, and the absence of his presence was something Atilla had felt immediately. It was only fortunate that she'd managed to escape once she quickly went from the one doing the pursuing to the one being pursued, but it still left her in a masterless state, deprived of mana and a stable connection to the world. Atilla wanders the city streets as it begins to rain, light enough for now but telling of a heavier rain to come.

It's hard for her to say if it's fortunate or not when she happens upon Illya. She recognised the girl of course, who'd once been an enemy master prior to Atilla cutting down her servant, and now in her weakened state she's face to face with her once more.

Is it a blessing? Depending on how things go, it just might be.]

You...[She stops approaching, leaving some distance between the two. Truth be told with the way she moves, practically dragging herself along, she looks as if she couldn't pursue Illya if she did try to run.] ...I recognise you. You are the girl from before.

[ A Master, for sure. She's one that's reluctant to enter the fray and is also most likely to give her position to Shinji, her older brother and have them use her Command Seals. She definitely sits back and doesn't fight at all.

Feel free to ask for Dark Sakura as a Master as well. ]

[Now, it's fairly obvious to her a certain shitheel of a Matou isn't her real master. He acts like it, but short of using command seals he has absolutely no way of ordering her around. And Nobunaga isn't really the type to take orders from most people anyway. No, she hadn't thought to question this setup before, but she's finding it really difficult to put up with Shinji anymore. It's a miracle she hasn't shot him to death, honestly.

No, before taking that route (and she's heavily considering it) she ends up just barging into Sakura's room without knocking, looking fairly put off.]

Oi. You and I need to have a talk about this arrangement of ours, true master.

[ A rather determined Master whose ideals consist of wanting to protect the people she cares about and not wanting to kill anyone. She will definitely use her Command Seals to achieve that ideal.

As a Servant - I'll be pulling from Grand Order and she'll be Shielder. She's a very defensive Servant that focuses on protecting and not attacking in the slightest bit. The offense will be left to her Master.

Also as a heads up, if you choose to opt for an identity prompt, be warned that there will be spoilers! ]

[ As a Master she's the absolute worst. She has no interest in the grail, or really following any of Fate's story, she's just here for the girls. Which means that male servants will get the short end of the stick, and should probably expect to go without mana transfers.. or any attention at all. Female servants will get lots of bullying and prodding to get every My Room line, as well as frequent offers to transfer mana or do lewd things. If your Noble Phantasm takes too long to cast though you can bet she'll never let you use it.

As a Servant she's probably way too good. A Caster is likely, given the massive amounts of mana she contains to be able to have so many servants under her. Will likely play up the Master/servant play way too much. Her Noble Phantasm is 30-Quartz Summon where she attacks with whatever comes of her gacha roll. Let's be real, it's probably just a 4* CE and useless. ]

[A servant Assassin who's undyingly loyal to his Master and doesn't question their decisions in the slightest, no matter whether he agrees with them or not. He's here to get the job done, nothing more, nothing less.]

[ As a Master, she will be human and be a skilled but prissy magus that milks her Servant for all they're worth. Tons of mana. Despite being a little shit, she will take good care of them. She will prefer coercion and subterfuge to strategies involving brute strength or honor.

As a Servant, she will be a Lancer. She will act lazy and disrespectful but will be extremely protective of her Master. She doesn't care about fighting honorably and only cares about winning. She will spend all her downtime being a lazy mooch. ]

[Literal horseman of the apocalypse, Rider class. He's a fairly stoic, grim person...but he has a dry sense of humour and is fairly devoted to fulfilling his duty. He'll be loyal to his Master, even advising them if necessary.

That being said, he's likely a figure akin to a counter guardian so if your plans are a massive threat to the world or something, he won't hesitate to cut down his master. Basically play it very carefully around him if you're up to no good.]

[A noble Master seeking the Grail to keep it out of evil hands, or a Caster or Assassin who desires it to undo the mistakes she made in life, Fate/ Saber-style.]

[Truth be told, the appearance of Zelda's summoned servant is just about the furthest thing from heroic a heroic spirit could be. With pale skin, tattered robes across his armour and the grim looking mask obscuring his face, one would think this man to be some great evil rather than a hero, if they were to judge by looks alone.

However, following his summoning, he simply watches.]

Speak. Are you the one who has summoned me? Are you my Master?

[The voice is rather rough and coarse, but not inhuman by any means, at least.]

[Shadows themselves are not to be feared. That's what her mentor taught her - there can be safety in shadows, and as much as she might have selfishly preferred a hero of light to serve her in this war, a hero of shadows would be one less expected from the heiress of the House of Hyrule, that once claimed holy blood in centuries past.

And... as accomplished as she might be as a magi, Zelda is still quite young to be waging war. A Servant more befitting of her mentor and advisor's style may be for the best.

So Rider appears, and it's difficult to not seem intimidated, but not impossible. Zelda keeps her back straight, chin held high despite the tightness of her jaw, and lifts a hand to display the Command Seals burning into her skin as the light from the summoning fades.]

I am. My name is Zelda, and I have summoned you, Rider, so I may seek the Holy Grail. Will you aide me in this?

[It's less a question and more a formality, but still, even if she's putting on a brave face, she really would like to have an amicable relationship with her Servant for the duration of the war if possible.]

[Of course; she knows her servant and he knows his master after all. They're connected by something far deeper than simple seals carved upon her hand.

But with that little formality out of the way, Death steps out of the summoning circle and approaches to get a closer look at his Master. His eyes scrutinise her, something he makes no attempt to hide, but it isn't long before he chuckles to break the silence - just as hoarse, but thankfully without a hint of derision.]

Everyone seeks the holy grail. I would ask what it is you desire to do with it.

( Whether a Servant or Master, she will be bubbly and flirtatious. She prioritizes her partner's happiness and well being more than winning the war. As a Master, she won't have much investment in winning the war, but as a Saber she will put everything into her Master's honor and victory. As a Servant, she will have a skill that will increase her stats if her Master is female. )

[As a Master, she seems cold but actually cares deeply for her Servant, quietly fussing over them after battles and making sure they're comfortable. She has a number of ghost familiars as well, who assist her and her Servant in battles.

As a Servant, Lapis will be a Caster whose magic is centered around summoning spirits to aid her in battle. She will be completely loyal to her Master, as well as very protective.]

( rider class. give her money and she's the most loyal servant — for a few minutes, at least. )

Though the problem is, Vietnam doesn't even know how to be a master! She may have had some information, but other than her boundless amount of immortal vitality, she's not entire sure what else she needs to offer. It can't be that difficult, right?

And so she stands before him, looking utterly perplexed, but so proud that she's trying not to be.]

( A flippant, lazy, and crude Servant who complains about almost any order given. Doesn't like his lack of freedom as a Servant. Despite his weapon and fighting style suggesting he would be a Saber, he is actually a Caster.

As a Master, he has zero interest in the Holy Grail and his intention is to put an end to the war altogether. Despite being a lazy jackass, he is a genius of a magus and is hiding is real identity. )

[ Servant class Saber, and member of the knights of the round. Don't go against the king unless you want some trash talking. ]

[Servant! A raging and foul-mouthed creature who for some reason looks like a high-school cyborg. Enjoys long walks on the beach and smashing people to death with a giant axe. Also has a-totally-not-stand called Asterius. Probably works better with people who love ruining things as much as her, but I think it'd be funny for her to have the exact opposite for a Master.]

[The weakest Servant. Can only deal chip damage. Can't keep dodging forever.]

[A Master working for a shadowy organization that seeks the Grail for its own purposes. Mariah was selected to be their contestant due to her skill as a Magus. Excels at using her magic to stun her enemies and lure them into a trap. Prefers to stay out of actual combat if she can.

Also she makes really weird faces when she gets angry.]

[Either a Servant (Saber) or Master! If Servant, expect him to have E rank luck. If Master, it's totally on accident and he'll have no idea what the hell he's doing. Regardless of which one he winds up as, expect him to be a grumpy asshole.]

( as a master, shiemi is a extremely kind and considerate master who works to win the war to better mankind. she has a demon familiar, and her only defensive is said familiar. she only has very weak healing magic in her arsenal so she’ll need protecting.

as a servant shiemi is a naïve caster who is relatively unsure of her place and why she is considered a “hero” in general. her attacks are primarily defense spells made of using plants. surprisingly—her noble phantasm is quite deadly. )

Yo, Master.

[She's got herself a tall, blonde haired man with a very noticeable Irish accent. He steps forward from the summoning circle, bowing his head.]

You called for me, didn't you? Servant Lancer, at your service.

( you’ll find yourself seemingly in a secluded area in her backyard, the smell of flowers present as they were both not so far off from her grandmother’s now expansive garden. shiemi smiles pleasantly with arms folded behind her back. )

Yes. Please, just call me Shiemi!

( she bows her head politely. )

Ah, yes, good! A Lancer, just what I summoned for! Lancer… what are your goals for the war?

My goals...? You must mean my wish, then. Well...in truth, it's a fairly personal affair. I hope you don't mind me keeping quiet about it for now. I'll tell you in due time.

[He feels like admitting he wants to change the unfortunate luck he tends to have with women right away...might sound a bit strange without context.]

Ah, but don't worry. It's not that I've anything to hide. On my honour as a knight, I'll serve you loyally. That I promise.

Oh. . . I understand, don’t worry. The War has it’s way of revealing important secrets when the moment calls for it!

( . . .or so she has heard. shiemi claps once happily, revealing on the back of her hand her command spells. )

I believe you would never wanna hurt me. ( she turns on her heel excitedly, waving for him to follow her. ) Come on! The War doesn’t officially start until tomorrow. Let’s relax and talk a little.

[He follows along after her, trying to get a look at the flowers as they pass through.]

Then, Shiemi...the air here is wonderful. Do you tend to this garden yourself?

I do, actually!

( she stops in her tracks, gazing at him over her shoulder. )

It was actually my grandmother’s but. . . I’m taking care of it now! Pretty, huh?

[Servant, Lancer Class obviously. She can be many classes, but this Arturia is summoned as Lancer with her own AU background courtesy of FGO. Her personality is slightly different from her Saber version, mostly because she never had any regrets and is a pseudo-Divine Spirit, sort of like Romulus.]

[As a Master, she's probably dead average. She doesn't actually have a wish of her own, but if her Servant decides they want to do and/or wish for bad things, she'll be very unhelpful. Beyond that, she seriously doesn't care.

As a Servant, she's an Assassin specializing in stealth and physical weakness exploitation (e.g. aiming for a damaged point in an armor or aiming between the metal plates of same, etc.) Not very strong due to her act of heroism not being known by more than ten people, but she did put down a serial killer...]
