"People ask, How did you get in there? What they really want to know is if they are likely to end up in there as well. I can't answer the real question. All I can tell them is, It's easy."

Well, you've really done it now. You're in a mental institution. Maybe it's a modern facility with a therapy garden, compassionate staff members, and a warm environment meant to help nurse people back to health, or maybe it's a glorified dungeon where the government shoves people they don't want to deal with and patients are abused by staff. Regardless of what it is, you're there, and it doesn't look like they're planning on letting you out any time soon.

Maybe you're actually not supposed to be there and you're trying to arrange for your release. Maybe you actually are meant to be there and you're struggling with your illness. Maybe you're not a patient at all and you're just there to visit or earn your paycheck. It's up to you.

Rules:

1. Post with your character's name, canon, and your preferences on the subject bar, and set up the situation.
2. Tag other people. Are you a visitor? A staff member? A fellow patient? A hallucination? It's your choice.
3. Have fun!

"Well I'm right. They were there. I know they were." She said, crossing her arms. Him talking about it was only making her more hostile about it.

Rory walked over to her bed and sat down beside her. "Of course they were. It's why there have always been star cults. But they aren't here." Rory pulled a book out of his pocket to show her. But the message wasn't the book, it was the doodles in the inside cover. To most eyes he'd have covered it with a random pattern of dots. But they were the constellations in almost the right places. It had taken him weeks to piece together. And the blue binding of the book felt right somehow.

Her eyes went wide when she looked at the book. Her fingers traced over the dots, and she could see them in her head-- all lit up in the sky. Amy looked back to him, trying to figure him out. "Is this a joke, Rory? If they see you with this-- if they see me with this, I don't want to go back on the pills again." Of course her reaction turns from shock to anger, because it simply can't be true.

"Oh Amy." Rory shook his head in a familiar mix of exasperation and affection. He knew she was far, far smarter than he was. But sometimes... "They wouldn't understand that if they saw it. And you're not in here because you believe in stars." He frowned slightly. "You're in here because you bit five shrinks, you sometimes get violent when someone suggests there aren't stars, and spend at least three hours a night looking for them."

"That's because I know they're there. Somewhere. Maybe not here, but they're there." She crosses her arms. He's only managing to upset her.

"You won't find them if you stay in here." Rory's voice was soft. "And they won't let you out until you stop staring at the night sky. They don't care if you believe in stars, but they do care if you appear to be able to look after yourself." Rory paused for a second. "And I miss you."

"I can look after myself just fine." Although she wasn't planning on stopping her stare at the sky. She was still pretty convinced on it. The fact so many were insistent on this. Maybe she should have given in, but it's not like she talked about the memories she did have.

Her eyes flick back to him. "Then visit me more." Simple answer. Duh.

"I want you home, Amy. Not spending every night in this bed." Rory looked as if he was about to continue then turned scarlet as one of the memories of things that hadn't happened crossed his mind. "I..."

Firmly he changed the subject back. "Convince them you can take care of yourself. They don't actually care if you believe in stars or not, just that you don't bite shrinks. And I've a present for when you get out. A telescope." Which had obviously taken some getting - telescopes had never really taken off in a world without stars to look at.
