[ the first few months living in new york were something out of a dream. she acquiesced to living with the avengers, fearing herself, fearing what she could do if left alone. there were already some news about her, a survivor of the battle of sokovia, an enhanced that helped save the rest of the city with powers behind what mankind could comprehend at the time. they were fascinated; all she asked for was time to grieve. they were so kind, these avengers, these icons and heroes with their supernatural powers dedicated in helping humanity, to open up their home and their world to her. and she had no one and nothing else.

slowly, she healed, opened up. they were acquaintances first, then friends, then comrades. they are a long way from being her family, but she thinks pietro would not mind, if it happens eventually. she spent her days training and fighting, and if not that, she embraced their company, listened to their stories as they listened to hers.

and then, it happened.

it'd been subtle, an accidental touch that snowballed, but they all say that it happens like that, the first time you touch your soulmate. you will feel as though your entire world has shifted, throwing you off-balance, before you feel like yourself again but — whole. as if it simply was making some space in your life for the other person you didn't know you were waiting for all this time.

it was over something as stupidly simple as breakfast. they both woke up early, earlier than most of the other occupants (those who managed to sleep, anyway, which is to say, barely anyone — and those who are still asleep probably sleep like the dead, anyway). wanda cooked, sam set the table. they'd already sat down, started talking. a normal conversation between two people that know each other, and work together. they both reached for the bread — sparks flew. the kind that you just know means your whole life is about to change. vivid red blasted from her fingers a moment later, upending the table, knocking sam off his chair, throwing her backwards and to the wall.

it was, suffice to say, not a very auspicious beginning. ]

[ Initially, Willow had found her soulmate dreams scary. Well, actually, at first she hadn't thought that's what they were at all, because they were filled with scary things so often she thought they were nightmares. Not that the average girl has nightmares of fire and fuzzy-shaped, indistinct monsters all that often, but it had gone like smoke with enough time awake and she'd never puzzled over it too much.

Then it had hit her like a lightning bolt sometime around freshman year what they really were. She'd spilled it all to Xander, overwrought at wondering just what their life was like, but by then there were enough dreams of traveling and tedious school functions as well to balance it out that it was easy to imagine those were the real ones after all. But Willow had never been totally comfortable with the idea that she had a soulmate. Who would want her? Dreams of her must be boring as heck. Just lots of fussing mom and then parents barely remembering she existed except for her grades and dumb nerdy friendships with Xander and Jesse.

Until Buffy showed up, of course, and Jesse died, and things were never the same again. She'd feel badly about giving her soulmate a lot of dreams of running for her life, or hitting demons with fire extinguishers, or staring fixedly at a pencil on a comforter, as she sat on her bed and tried to learn telekinesis, but, well. She had to do something. And by then it was already really obvious to Willow that those bad dreams hadn't been nightmares after all, because ghosts and demons and vampires were all real.

Maybe they were soulmates after all, if they both knew that.

But Willow still isn't thinking she'll meet them any time soon. Honestly, what she's thinking is that there is a serious hunk sitting at her usual study table in the library, and Giles hasn't shooed him out so that means he must be respectful of the library, so he's not just a hunk but one with manners. Gosh. Willow doesn't imagine he'll want to talk to her, but as she goes by, she, in her nervousness, fumbles and has a book slide off the top of the overly large stack she's carrying. It thumps loudly on the ground right next to him.

She flushes and tries to scrabble to get all her books on the table (in his space!) so she can recover the one on the floor as soon as possible. Sumerian Myths and Legends translated from the original by J. E. White was not all that subtle, or flattering. ]
