It was bound to happen sometime. If Eliot was to be honest with himself, he never expected a happily ever after. Living to 40 would be pushing it, 50 wasn't meant to happen. He always expected it to be a blaze of glory outgunned twenty to one, or maybe something he never saw coming, like a bullet in the back of his head or a bomb that would wipe his whole existence.

All things considering, taking a bullet for Hardison wasn't a bad way to go. He took the gunner down afterwards, but he knew, from experience more than anything, that he was going down as well. It had nicked something and his lungs were filling with blood, making his breathing labored and bringing a distinctive copper taste at the back of his throat. It was only a question of whether he'll bleed out or drown first. "Dammit... Hardi-son..."

With Hardison on one side and Parker on the other seeing him off, it really wasn't a bad way at all. At least they were safe and he wasn't alone. More than he deserved already.

Tessa had watched it all play out, and if not for Eliot's quick response, they might all have died that day. If she'd been human, she might have had tears in her eyes as she watched him say goodbye. He knew his time was coming, and despite his seemingly frustrated words, she could sense his acceptance-his relief at knowing that his sacrifice was not in vain. And as she stepped out of the shadows to meet him, in that place between life and death, she knew that her assignment had changed.

"Eliot Spencer?" she asked, offering her hand to him when the moment came. "Do you know who I am?"
