[ When the older people in Overwatch suggested that they all go on a "team-building retreat," Hana did not anticipate said retreat being a road trip. The organization has a powerful aerial base, after all, why couldn't they just take that to wherever they're going.

And then she learned that not only was it a road trip, it was also a camping trip, and she nearly died. Like, nearly actually died, and she felt her soul leaving her body. (No, she didn't, that's an exaggeration, but the Overwatch veterans certainly got a Reaction out of her.)

So off they went, however many of them, split in to different cars, all packed with camping supplies and luggage and essentials. Which, to Hana, obviously means a charging port to plug into the car that lets her charge her phone, her portable gaming console(s) and the portable charging block(s) that will let her charge her gadgets while out in the Awful Wilderness. And essential nourishment like soda and chips and candy. Somehow, she's ended up riding shotgun in the car that McCree is driving (though don't ask her to take a shift, because this girl does not know how to drive), but for the most part she's either sleeping, eating, or playing a game, which makes her a poor road trip buddy, but seriously why couldn't they just take the airship. It's been quiet save for whatever music McCree has decided to play and the sounds of Hana's multiple devices chiming, but now she breaks it to reveal a very important piece of news: ]

I have to pee.

[ All in all, Jesse didn’t mind traveling with Hana, and he took her snacking and gaming and constant shuffling of devices charging in the car in stride. It seemed to grate on some of the others, and more often than not, it was just the two of them and their luggage in the old SUV. (Though a couple of times, Genji and his omnic friend joined them, the very picture of calm in the backseat as Hana made noises of frustration at her handheld game… thingy.) Currently it was just the two of them, and when Hana piped up to not ask for a snack or whatever was currently plugged into the dashboard, McCree cast a glance her way. ]

I asked ya if ya had to go back at the gas station. There ain’t nothin’ else around here for miles.

But I didn't have to go then.

[ And now she does. Still, she slumps in her seat with her arms folded, the very picture of perfect posture, and puts her feet up on the dashboard. Being generally the worst. ]

How is there so much nothing here?

You want me t’pull over? ‘Cause I’ll pull over. Plenty of rocks around for privacy.

[ This is sure a conversation he never thought he’d have with Hana, but he’ll roll with just about anything, so he’s not too bothered.

As for her question, he shrugs. ] ‘Cause it’s the desert?

[ McCree definitely struck Hana as the type who will roll with just about anything, given how much literal rolling the man does around the field during missions. She slumps further still in her seat, which probably shouldn't be humanly possible, but here they are. And then, in a voice so quiet you'd almost think she was a little embarrassed, she says, ]

Can you? Pretty please?

[ To his credit, the quiet arching of an eyebrow is the only acknowledgement he gives her tone, and just as quietly pulls off the road. There’s a decent-sized outcropping of rocks a couple yards away, and with a quiet, “go on, then” he shoos her out of the car.

He exits as well, leaning against the door and keeping his back turned to her as he lights a cigar. Not being able to smoke in their vehicle has been the only bad thing about this trip, in his opinion. ]

[ Hana's opening the door even before the car's come to a complete stop, feet already on the ground by the time that it is and scurrying off to the rocks--but not before sticking her tongue out at McCree as she's leaving.

If anyone ever asks if something like this happened along the road, Hana would totally blame it on the desert being a desert and not the fact that she didn't go to the bathroom when she could have. When her business is finished, she makes herself proper again, and is tying her hair up into a bun at the top of her head as she reaches the car. ]

Hey, you used to live in a place like this, didn't you?

[ He only turns to look once he hears her voice, exhaling a plume of smoke before he answers ]

Pretty similar, yeah. I reckon you're a city girl.

[ Hana peers at the top of the car, thinking about resting her arms on it, but she sees how hot the metal must be from the waves of heat emanating off of it. Instead, she settles on stretching her arms up. ]

Yep yep! I've never seen a desert like this until now. It's weird.

[ Then, she lets her arms fall to her sides before giving a shrug. ]

Anyway, thanks for pulling over, McCree!

[ For the most part, Hana is quite thankful for the relative fame she's achieved; she's worked hard, regardless of what other people try to say. In spite of her attitude, she really does just want to help and give people hope, and sometimes when the going gets rough, encouragement from her fans is what gets her through. For all that, she's grateful.

But sometimes, it's a little much, and that certainly hasn't gotten any better since joining Overwatch and making more of a name for herself. Sometimes Hana just wants to leave her house on her bike to get some freaking donuts or to go to the market for some delicious (probably deep-fried) street food without being accosted by passersby. And sometimes, and this time is one such time, Hana wants to go to things like the Lotus Lantern Festival to enjoy the sights and make cute lanterns and eat temple food just like everyone else.

Still, she ventures out on the night of the festival only very vaguely being lowkey and incognito: her casual wear still comes in nearly the same color scheme as her MEKA gear, there's probably a bunny symbol somewhere on her wardrobe, and the pink marks on her face are still fairly visible. This does result in a few turned heads as Hana wanders about, but at least she's easy to lose in the crowd.

At least until she gets distracted by the smell of food and bumps into someone's back. ]

Oof!

[Shiro's a pretty solid presence and he's been jostled several times already thanks to the crowds but that impact felt like a bit more than a careless brush and he twists at the waist, arm going out, hand immediate to catch and balance whoever it was.]

Careful.

[There's no real danger - but no one needs to end up on their backside because they bounced off him either. Especially not someone with about as much weight on them as a kid. Which is what he's expecting to see when his eyes catch up with his reflexes. Except - its not. The markings on her cheeks are familiar but they don't register as why right away and he offers a small smile.]

Sorry about that. Distracted?

Hey, watch where--

[ "you're going," is what the end of Hana's sentence would have been, but she's stopped short, words lost when she realizes she's talking to someone's back and that someone, once she looks up as he's turning to face her, is actually rather statuesque. So actually, she's the one who should've been watching where she's going. At length, she manages to answer his question with a bit of a chuckle, more at herself than anything. ]

Yup! Guess I was! Woops. [ And then a beat before she blurts out, ] Jeez, you're tall.

[She's either on the start of berating him or someone that jostled her into him but she never finishes and he lets it slip past either way. His hand does stay at her back, just a few seconds longer, making sure she's steady on her feet before it slips away. No harm done to either of them and he smiles at her chuckle. One shoulder, starting the shrug that would pass the bump off as no big deal gets about half-way through the motion -

and then stops. And its his turn to chuckle. Conscious he shifts, just a little. Just enough to use his bulk to block a little space for her against the moving crowd. His eyes crinkle a little at their edges as his smile goes a bit bigger.]

You sure you're not just a little short?

[ The nerve! This person not only accidentally got in Hana's way while she wasn't paying attention, they're also calling her short. He gets a pout from her as she folds her arms, apparently displeased by his chuckling at her expense. ]

I'm pretty sure anyone is short to a giant like you. I'm average sized!

[It's not Shiro's usual nature to tease someone. And certainly not about something that they could very well actually feel self-conscious about. But there's something about the way she absolutely puffs up the he finds - hopelessly cute. And the way she doesn't even flicker about backing down just eggs him on.

Which isn't to say he doesn't know better. He was raised with good manners. His mother would have killed him otherwise.

It's just the girl in front of him makes him want to see more of her reactions. So he intentionally leans down, making the height difference obvious, and locks eyes with her.]

It's funny. You don't look average.

[ At the very least, Hana doesn't feel self-conscious about her height, it's just that she truly believes that Shiro is just Too Tall. Hana's brows furrow, adamantly maintaining her eye contact with him even when he leans down. ]

Duh, of course I'm not average! Just average sized.

[Her answer has his eyes curving, crinkling at their corners and his smile comes, spreading. Not an ounce of backing down in her. It's beautiful. He doesn't break their eye contact either even as he straightens back up. Still grinning.]

Average sized. And I'm too tall for you. Is that why you tackled me just a moment ago?

Please, I didn't tackle you--if I'm so small and you think me walking into you is tackling then I don't know what to tell you!

[ This pint-sized package comes with a lot of sass. ]

[He likes sass. Always has. It's one of those fighter traits he admires. But he knows when to stop too because there has to be more than sass to be memorable and he knows he's been hassling her probably more than he should. He holds up a hand, palm up.]

Maybe it was just the personality that made such an impact on me. Can I treat you to an ice cream to make up for it?

[ Will Hana song ever turn down an offer for free ice cream, even from a complete stranger? ]

... See, now we're talking.

[ Nope. ]

[Her answer brings his grin back. Ice cream is a powerful motivator.]

I'm Shiro, by the way. [A glance up and around and then:] And I might need some help finding an ice cream stand.

[ Hana has to admit that she's a little surprised that the initial reaction wasn't something like, holy crap, you're D.Va, but she won't complain. Not today, at least. She flashes a confident smile and moves around to Shiro's side, casting him a sidelong (and upwards) glance. ]

No problem, I know the best place to get some around here! Just try and keep up, okay?

[ Annnnd she's already walking through the crowd. ]
