THE MINECRAFT MEME



For those who may have been residing under a very nice sedimentary boulder for the past ten years or so, Minecraft is the first great breakout hit of the indie age. Originally starting as a personal project for a programmer by the username of Notch, this strange, blocky sandbox has since been bought by Microsoft and exploded into multiple mediums, including books, OTHER video games and -- ironically -- Lego sets. So yeah, it's kind of a big deal.

For those who have played it, we're sure you've imagined your characters in the game more than once. For lack of ability to get together in a physical server and play together, however, we have memes. Now your character can experience the wonder of building, mining, and getting blown up in various unique ways. And you KNOW they'll thank you for it. Really.

Now, like the game, this meme is a sandbox. Don't let any scenario list hold you back. You are free! Free as a bird! ...but we also know this is kind of overwhelming, so here are some lists you can roll on or get inspiration from.

1. FIRST NIGHT: Nothing quite like the experience of huddling in your crappy little starter house, listening to all the enemies groaning and moaning around outside. Quite possibly the most potentially shippy prompt in the list. If you can focus on that sort of thing, anyway.

2. THAT KIND OF PLAYER: There's always one person whose primary goal in Minecraft is to make a ginormous pit, or an inverted pyramid, or a giant dick made out of dirt. Maybe that person is you! Just... expect people to react oddly to you. Nobody respects art these days.

3. UNWELCOME GUEST: Oops. SOMEBODY didn't light their place properly. Now there's what you're pretty sure is a Creeper wandering around in your house. What do?

4. TOO FAR, TOO FAST: Ever notice how you have to wander for eons to find everything you want? Ever notice how easy it is to get lost this way? Guess what just happened to YOU. Looks like it's time to make another shitty starter shelter for the night... if you can make it in time anyway.

5. GRIEFING: Nothing makes friends like setting up someone's place to get flooded with water, or setting up a trap with mechanisms to cause somebody to fall into lava Wait, friends isn't the word. What was it...

6. VILLAGE BABYSITTER: You found the village! The villagers keep trying to kill themselves on you! It's almost like they have some sort of rudimentary and defective AI or something...

7. RUINS EXPLORER: You found a pyramid! Or a dungeon. Or a stronghold, or what the hell ever. Question is, are you ready to raid it? (Probably less than you think.)

8. WHETHER NETHER?: Somebody's made a portal to the nether! It's hot and creepy and there are weird undead pigmen and something's moaning around you and you just want to go hoooooooome. Ooh, is that Nether Quartz?

9. THE END! THE EEEEEND. OOH: You've finally done it! You've gotten super powerful, and now you're facing up to the Nether Dragon! Or maybe you've already defeated it! Congratulations! ...Wait, there's STUFF in The End now? Son of a --

10. WILDCARD: This isn't even REMOTELY a complete list. Like I said, it's a sandbox meme. Go sandboxy with it.

And remember, it's a dangerous world out there! Thankfully, they JUST patched out Herobrine. ...We think.

Sadly, thus far she's only at the 'foundation' stage of construction, and is still excavating the basement and moat-though parts of it are already full of lava.

Grief her by demolishing that retaining wall or ask what's going on?]

Of course, but I'm planning to build this thing with scaffolding and by pouring the obsidian into place instead of mining it. We can re-use the buckets, so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Foundations first of course, it would be silly to build this all by skyhook.

A cell you drop someone in and they can't get out? You can line it with cobble or something, I just want to have a bunch of cells and then a trap door that I can drop people down into a hole with. Or you could go get some sand or gravel, we need something easy to dig to serve as our scaffold.

If you want to line it with obsidian, feel free-it's really just a roleplaying thing. They're a historical thing though-looked a bit like an upside-down ice cream cone. Drop someone in and never ever look at them again.
