Season of the Witch

The concept of the Witch represents many things. Witches may be women, outcast, or other, and their power has been feared because it threatens the tidiness of the status quo. From Medea to Elphaba, the witch has been hated, feared, and tormented, but sometimes she has ruled triumphant.


Scenarios:
1.The Modern Coven ~ Witches in the modern world. There’s a school in Louisiana, where the witches walk two by two in broad-brimmed black hats, under the watchful eye of their Supreme. There’s a house in New England, where two sisters do magic with pies and gardening. There’s a prophecy in Sunnyvale. There’s a charmed trio of three sisters who fight demons. There are magic shops, Wiccans and druids.
2. The Ancient Forests of Europe ~ Arthurian England. The realm of the Leannán Sídhe. La Belle Dame Sans Merci. The Lady of the Lake. Avalon. The Huldra. Baba Yaga. The woods this way are dark and deep, and if you stray from the path, you may meet a witch. She may be beautiful, or she may be hideous, but whatever you do, mind your manners.
3. Realms Far and Lands Forgotten ~ Medea came from Colchis, on the far side of the black sea. There have been witches real and fictional from a hundred realms and ancient times. Nitocris of Egypt, witches of Hyperborea, perhaps even Enheduanna of Sumeria. Witches, queens, and priestesses, filled with an ancient and wondrous power.
4. The Realms of the Blood - The Black Jewels ~  The Blood are the caretakers of the land, blessed by the Darkness with wells of power in the form of their Jewels. Every woman's a witch, every man a warlord, and with a reservoir of raw psychic power ready to tap for their Craft, the Blood are forces of nature. And nature dictates that men among the Blood are born to serve and women to be served. Bound by Protocol and arrayed into matriarchal Courts large and small, Blood society is highly stratified by the thirteen ranks of Jewel and a handful of castes. Add social rank into the mix and their society becomes a constantly evolving dance of power, caste, and privilege that spans three realms: Terrielle, Realm of Light, Kaeleer, the Shadow Realm, and Hell, the Dark Realm and home of the demon dead. Implacable Queens rule their Courts and tend the land beneath their feet, sharp-edge Black Widows experiment in poisons and spin tangled webs to predict the future, Healers mend the injured and cure the sick, and Priestesses preside over altars, offerings, and Sanctuaries. Beneath Caste and Jewel, however, there are as many types of witch as there are witches, and all are dark and dangerous.
5.Something wicked this way comes ~ For wicked witches, whether you desire to devour children or turn a kingdom to ruins. Eternal life is within your grasp, and they claim that your crimes are as black as your heart. But that’s all slander, of course, and for anyone who doubts, you have a basket full of lovely apples.
6.Somewhere over the rainbow ~ Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Oz is full of witches, some lovely and some wicked. There are yellow brick roads to follow, and plenty more witches in the neighbouring lands of Ix and Ev and Boboland. Just as long as no one drops a house on you. Be careful to stay away from water.


How to play:
If you’d like your character to be a witch, describe what kind of witch they are and what kind of magic they have. Note any preferences you have for setting/scenario, and include a prompt or two!
Witches don’t have to be women, though they should be Other in some way. Shamanic figures in many cultures have often transgressed gender roles.
If you prefer your character to be a mundane in a witchy world, pick a scenario or two and describe what role your character would have in that world.

After months of searching, Bennet has finally found the legendary temple of the Sisterhood. A pity he comes to it not as the shepherd but instead as the offering.

He has had months to accept the mission the church has charged with him with, not to go to the Holy Land with his fellow crusader knights but instead to travel north, with only a single fellow knight at his back, and seek out the heathen cult of the Sisterhood, said to have been ancient since before Christ walked the Earth. In bygone times it had another name, and another queen, and was long thought to have been destroyed. But it was not destroyed at all, the church has now learned, merely reduced in strength after the original queen was overthrown in a violent power struggle.

She is called different names, that witch that overthrew the so-called Moon Goddess. Some call her the Red Queen, others the Goblyn Queen. Whatever her true name, she is an abomination before the Lord, and it was the holy duty of Bennet and his fellow knight Eobar Garrington to find her and slay her.

At first, the only challenge appeared to be finding her. Weeks turned into months of searching, all done entirely on horseback, as the church warned them that their quarry dwelt in a place that would be found "neither by ship nor on foot". Then came the raiders, bands of demons in human form, coming at first only after nightfall but then at any hour of the day. They were hideous but not formidable, and Bennet had taken heart, believing they were on the right track.

It seems they were, for tonight the Sisterhood's Queen sent something stronger than raiders or recreants. Tonight came a Hellstorm -- a living, breathing tornado of mystical energy, something neither his nor Garrington's blades could touch. He and Garrington had been separated trying to stay ahead of the beast's path of destruction, and then the thralls had come, ordinary people under the Queen's evil power.

And now Bennet is alone, his hands bound behind him, stripped of all his weapons and armor as the thralls lead him to what can only be the temple he and Garrington have both been searching for. It is unsettling, for he feels something in this place he has felt precious few times before, a sense of something calling to him and growing stronger the deeper they take him.

After corridors and corridors of scarcely lit tunnels, the hall they bring him to is so bright as to very nearly blind him. The worshippers here are no swarthy hags, but women more beautiful than any he has ever seen. And there, up on a dais, attended by a blond man clad only in tattered black rags, is a woman who can only be the one he has been sworn to slay.

Bennet lifts his head and stares defiantly, refusing to let himself be cowed even as the thralls lead him to the dais before her and force him to his knees.

Kyle literally lives with a coven of witches; while he isn't one himself, he was frankenstein-resurrected by two and eventually becomes 'the coven guard dog.' So! Ideally interested in 1 but I'm open to just about anything -- he can be a prop or assistant in magic, and/or can be a guard/protector of your witch character. We have two flavors of Kyle: recently resurrected helpless tortured Kyle, or less unhinged mostly functioning (and wayyy calmer) magically tweaked Kyle. [Ginny was created for an urban fantasy setting, so she already has 1 down pat. More info on her powers can be found here; she's a totem for the opossum, which means she has an array of somewhat vague powers - prophecy, seeing through illusions, and the protection/bolstering of others. Think of her as the party's paladin, just with more...opossums.... Also fine with AUs of 2 or 3.

Ginny is often consulted for jobs by others, people either with or without powers themselves. If your character needs insight, or a spell performed, or a person found, Ginny's your girl. Conversely, Ginny could be coming to yours for assistance - she's no good at banishing evil spirits or performing exorcisms - or for ingredients. A girl's gotta have her rat livers on hand! Never know when you'll need them.

She once belonged to a coven where blood and dark magic were practised extensively and deserted it when she was one of the girls used as bait for a nefarious entity. As a witch, however, she's capable of performing spells or creating potions and new formulas from specific ingredients or inscriptions, readings or archaic chants. Her main interest is demonology however, which she's used mostly as means to protect herself. Having an actual blood affinity towards her former coven, she is capable of sensing if she's close to one of them. ]

[There's always something going wrong in the world that ebbs and flows around Kara; it's not her fault really, she just needs to get paid, is all, and trouble pays best. Rounding up a few demons pays particularly well when there's a fledgling necromancer who really needs his mess cleaned up before someone more important than Kara notices that he screwed up.

So - Demons. Which aren't her expertise, so she puts out a few feelers amongst her contacts to try to find someone who can help. All the actual grunt work is something Kara can do herself, she just needs a little help with the prep. Because she's not fucking suicidal.

Eventually a little bird passes along a name (literally a bird, having an affinity for ravens is helpful) and Kara packs her truck and starts on her way to one Astrid Rosenfeld. It sounds like a witch's name, that's for sure, though she isn't sure what she'll find aside from that, when she rolls into town.]
