So it's the end of the world, and not in the way they'd imagined it might happen.

Zombies. Why did it have to be those? Monsters aren't susceptible, and apparently spirits aren't either, but there are so many more humans than either of those.

Frisk wants to help. Frisk has to help. They can't just let people die--the uninfected, anyway--so they...they go out, sometimes. And try. Even if they're terrified.

Like now, creeping through the streets in the city they lived in once, ducking behind the wreckage of cars and listening out for cries that sound...human.

Rural Indiana is not exactly where Stella would prefer to be right now. If it were her choice, she wouldn't even be stateside — but when you work in law enforcement, sometimes work sends you places you don't expect. This had been part of an investigation into a series of murders in which the killer had gone to ground and then apparently fled to the States, and she had been in Indianapolis working with the state police — until all hell broke loose and she'd finally ended up, after a few hectic hours of trying to decide whether to stay or go, just taking her rental car and getting out.

Dealing with criminals is one thing; Stella copes with that on a daily basis, and she can safely say purely human evil doesn't surprise her anymore. It's another thing entirely to weather an attack by the undead. Stella barely has time to go back to her hotel to get only as much as she can carry — her travel bag, her gun, her warrant card — and silk blouses and pencil skirts don't really leave one well-equipped to fight zombies, but she's just going to have to handle it.

Stella drives until the car is almost out of petrol, which lands her in a small town called Hawkins. In any other situation this would be far from ideal, but at this point, she thinks, the farther away she is from the city, the better. Fewer people means fewer zombies, which means a better chance at staying alive. She doesn't need to know science fiction to use common sense.

It's probably fairly common at the Hawkins Police Department for a woman to show up looking for the person in charge — but probably less common for that woman to be a petite Englishwoman who looks, despite her every attempt at keeping her face and voice under control, like she's seen a few things no one should ever have to see.
