The month seems to drag by, but the day he is allowed to visit Castiel, he leaves early for Lucifer's home base, not bothering to tell anyone he is going.

He follows Lucifer's instructions to a tee, and when he makes it to the garden, he is not happy. Not happy.

He frowns at the Devil, arms crossed over his chest.

"Nice meeting spot," he growls.

"I rather like it," Lucifer says blandly, inspecting a rose bush, his back to Dean. Just a show of how utterly unconcerned he was of anything Dean could possibly do. "Last I checked on him, Castiel's taking a nap. So you have time to spare for me."

"Well, I'm not going to let you fuck me," Dean snaps, scowl deepening. "So what the hell do you want?"

"Oh really?" The temperature goes down a few degrees and Lucifer turns to give Dean a piercing look. "Have you forgotten that you agreed you're mine to do with as I wish?"

Not the smartest move there, Dean.

"So what? What do you want from me?" Dean asks, noticing the drop in temperature. He shivers a little.

I promised you'd always have me. [These are Balthazar's first words when he plummets out of Heaven's prison to the dying earth below, and makes a beeline for his fallen brother.

Balthazar has retained all his angelic powers, despite months of torture in Heaven, but it's a safe bet the fire of his Grace will die to cinders before long, in the absence of their siblings. He's relatively sanguine about this. There's an end coming no matter what he is or what he does. Best to meet it not-alone.]

I promised you and I promised myself. Evidently there's no one else left to give a shit, so I thought I'd best stick with plan A.

::It took Castiel a moment to work out that he actually saw and felt Balthazar. Then his face breaks out into a grin he doesn't entirely feel.::

You sure about this, Balthazar? Stick around and you'll be about as useful as I am.

::Which isn't very. A part of him knows it's at least partly his own fault, thanks to his coping methods but even without the drugs in his system, he's still only human. Not something he ever foresaw becoming; but then, he didn't see a lot of things coming.::

Cassi...you've always been far more useful than me. Power, or lack thereof, won't have changed that much. [He means it. Castiel has always had a sense of duty and organization that Balthazar can't quite match. Maybe the Apocalypse has diminished that as well as his angelic gifts, but he's still Cas.

At least, Balthazar has to assume he's still Cas.] So. Yes, I'm quite sure, provided you'll have me. I can't promise to be useful.

::Castiel makes a noncommittal sound about his level of usefulness. Hopefully, Balthazar won't be too disappointed in him after being around him for a month or two.::

We'll need to let Dean know you're here sometime later. This isn't a good time for surprise people who don't make their presence known.

While becoming human has driven Castiel to seeking out coping mechanisms - to lose himself in hedonism and drugs, it's done precisely the opposite to Balthazar. He's found new purpose in trying to keep them both safe, and as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. It's easier to stay sober when you have other things to keep yourself occupied with, and when alcohol's harder to come by and you find yourself contemplating if it's better to just have a drink or conserve it in case something needs disinfecting later on. Not that he's entirely opposed to a bit of fun now and then - truthfully, if it wasn't for the circumstances, he'd be pleased to see Castiel loosen up, and experiment a bit.

It's shortly before dawn when he slumps into the cabin with a pack loaded with supplies. He's learned that he likes making his own supply runs at night. It's more dangerous, yes, but sneaking off by himself means he doesn't have to share the take with anyone but Castiel, and he's more than happy to share with his favourite brother.

"Castiel? Are you asleep?"

"Mmm. Not anymore," Castiel says after he wakes up enough to process who and what he just heard. "You just came back from going on walkabout, I assume?"

Of course Balthazar did. Why else would he be waking him up before dawn? His mind goes off on a tangent for a moment before he forces it back on-subject. "One of these days, Dean's going to catch you at it."

"I did." Balthazar lets the pack slide off his shoulders and sets it on the floor. "And it went well, by the way."

He chuckles as Castiel brings up the chance of Dean figuring out what he gets up to while most of the rest of their camp is asleep. "He might. But I like to think I'm clever enough to keep that from happening."

"Try not to jinx it," Castiel advises as he internally waves the flag or surrender where sleep is concerned to slide out of bed and look for his pants. "Find anything good?"
