Rescue Me Meme

The Rescue Me Meme

'Cause, sometimes, you just can’t save yourself.

→ Post with your character’s name, canon, and any preferences in the subject line
→ Those tagging, go to RNG and roll for a number between one and ten.
→ Alternatively, just pick the choice you’re interested in most.

1. A Bad Date - You get a text, a phone call, or maybe you can just see the other person floundering on what clearly must be the worst date of their life. Time to step in and save the day.

2. Prison - Maybe they've been wrongly convicted, or maybe you're an accomplice. Either way, it's jailbreak. Maybe the guards will fall for the old 'wounded prisoner' technique.

3. Taken Hostage - They're being held at gunpoint, either for money or for fun. Maybe you can talk down their captors, or maybe you are a captor, secretly working to help them.

4. Abuse/Neglect - Your body is damaged, your suffering taken it's toll. You can't save yourself anymore. You're wounded, you're starving, maybe even dying. Someone, help.

5. Addiction - Just one more. Nothing bad will happen if you just get one more. Either way, you can't save yourself from this downward spiral. Someone else is going to have to help.

6. Yourself - One bad choice after another, your self-destructive tendencies are going to get the best of you unless someone steps in, quick, to save the day.

7. Climactic Situation - You're hovering over an active volcano, a pit of sharks, about to fall off a cliff. Whatever it is, you've only got precious seconds of life left.

8. Loneliness - You've been secluded, locked away, and the emptiness is overwhelming. You need company, or you might just drown.

9. Unwanted Social Function - A family reunion, your three o'clock board meeting, whatever it is, you desperately don't want to go. Hopefully your good buddy can come up with a distraction.

10. A Bad Romance - You're trapped in a relationship that's headed south, and you can't seem to get away from the other person. Looks like you need a helping hand, maybe a prince charming.

[John recognizes the words as a compliment and he appreciates it.]

It would.. give me something to do.

[His life has felt so empty since Sherlock died. Part of John wanted to die, too. He went to Afghanistan and came back, but he knows there's always a chance he won't come back the next time. Maybe that's part of the draw, though.]

[Greg understand that part of it. John didn't seem to be the sort who was meant for a quiet retirement. He'd met that sort before, on the force and more often in the fire department. They tended to die young, saving someone else.

Greg wished he were that sort, sometimes. Wished was the kind of person who could drown his grief and guilt in saving others. But the truth was, all he saw was more of the same old--only without Sherlock to help solve it. And he couldn't save everyone. Or even that many people. Most of the time, when he got involved, it was already too late for at least one person.]

Yeah. Bloody awful with nothing to do but watch telly.

[And not just because of the boredom. Even now, Sherlock's suicide came up on the news a lot, and John's name had been dragged through the mud too.]

[It was harder for John to see Sherlock's name ruined than his own. His friend wasn't a fraud, but no one believed him when he said it and the reporters just mocked him.]

Yeah. Well.

[His mind was just about made up on it.]

[The press were bloody idiots. Sherlock is--was an enormous prick, and Greg had wondered (stupidly, and he'd never forgive himself for his moment of doubt) if Sherlock might have done something terrible just for something to do. But no one could fake being as brilliant as he was; not when he'd walked in and read Greg's marriage problems and background and what he'd had for breakfast in the first few minutes after they met. And Sherlock was high at the time, too. You couldn't fake that. But once the press got an idea, they'd never let it go. Bastards.

Still, the press is something that Greg's used to handling. Part of the job for him, really. But John doesn't deserve it, and Greg knows that what they say about Sherlock probably bothers him more than what they say about him. Probably bloody hard for him to get a job anywhere in London now.

Either way, as much as he hates that he doubts John would be all that sorry to die, going back to the war can't be much worse than what he's doing to himself. And maybe he'll find a life again, who knows?

Of course, you can't say that kind of thing out loud. It'd be awkward between blokes. So instead, he settles for:]

Take care of yourself, all right?

If you go, look me up when you get back, right?

[Sherlock might be gone, Greg wants John to know that he still has friends, and people who care if he lives or dies.]

[The offer put a glimmer of a smile on John's face. Yes, he knew that Greg cared. John believed Greg was their only friend on the force after everyone began to doubt Sherlock. Though some didn't need that much of a push to call Sherlock a fraud.

Greg was a good man, though, and John always believed that. He still does. There are others he can blame far more for what happened to Sherlock than DI Lestrade.]

I will. Thanks.

[He really isn't a good man, let alone a great one. And it was true that a lot of the people on the force didn't need much of a nudge to doubt Sherlock. Sherlock embarrassed them every day, and embarrassed people wanted to vindicate themselves. Usually by tearing the person who'd shamed them down. Not pretty, but it was human nature.

He nods and stands up, feeling there isn't much more to say here. But he hesitates and adds one more thing before he turns to go.]

I'll tell Mrs. Hudson you said hullo next time I see her then?

[In other words, John needn't worry about her; Greg will make sure he looks in on her if John goes back to Afghanistan.]

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2012-08-31 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
[John smiles a bit in thanks.]

I'd appreciate that. I'll say goodbye before I leave.

[But it felt good to know that Lestrade would check in on her.

John offers his hand for a handshake.]

Thank you for everything.
onegoodman: (God help me)

[He solemnly extends his hand and shakes John's with the solemnity of a salute.]

Take care of yourself, mate.

[This might be the last time he sees John Watson alive, and the air feels heavy with the things they won't say about the man who brought them together. In the end, he just nods.]

Bye, Dr. Watson.

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2012-09-01 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
You too, Greg. Take care of yourself.

[He takes Lestrade's hand for a firm shake and lets it go.]

Goodbye. I'll see you again.
onegoodman: (I'll die with my boots on)

[personal profile] onegoodman 2012-09-01 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
You too.

[He turns and leaves, with his own shoulders squared to face the world, as well as he could.]
