Under the Sea AU Meme

Whether it’s the little mermaid or 20,000 leagues, this meme is all about the mysterious depths of the sea and the creatures that live in it. Which now very well may include you. Are you a marine biologist, a submarine explorer, or a creature of the dark and murky abyss? Perhaps, like Ahab, you’ve spent years on the waves, hunting some creature that lurks beneath. Perhaps you live in a house by the sea, and every night you watch the waves, but tonight the waves have dragged in something new and different.

There are unknown realms beneath the sea. Dread Cthulhu sleeps. Ariel sings. And adventure is awaiting.

How to play:
- Post with your character’s preferred role and a prompt or two, along with preferences and any canon or AU info that might be important.
- Venture forth into the watery deeps.

[What had been a hot summer day on land had been a nice cool one down in the ocean depths. Only the waters closer to the surface managed to soak in any of the warmth and as evening began to fall they too started to chill. Close to the time of sunset was Lance's favorite to venture up towards the world above his watery home. His lustrous blue tail pushed him up from the sea floor to where the sky was with powerful thrusts that helped him cut through currents and the ocean's natural motion.

Breaking through the surface with an excited gasp, the young merman shook his head to shake off the excess water from his face. Looking towards the shoreline he could see the sun continuing it's regular descent towards the mountains. The sky was colored with hues of pinks, purples, and oranges. It was always so beautiful.

Normally he would be a bit more cautious with being this close to land, but he knew this particular area was always deserted. The only thing that occupied it was a sea worn shack with a dock. His eldest sister warned him that a human lived there, but Lance had never actually seen it and so ignored her warnings. Thinking on it he turned his gaze in that direction and felt his heart plunge back into the cold bottom of the ocean.

The human was out.]

[The human was indeed out. He didn't usually visit the dock. It was old and falling apart, and deemed unsafe even before he started to live there. He used the beach mostly, where he would train and exercise. Sometimes, though, on a few rare occasions, he would venture out.]

[The sun was setting and the sky was painted in beautiful hues. Still, he wasn't exactly looking out to the sky, but rather to the ocean itself. He watched it with something of a melancholic, yet withering stare. Ten years ago the ocean took his family away, swept them up and then spat him back out onto the shore like unwanted debris. He learned how unforgiving the ocean was and why he never touched it if he could help it.]

[...And yet this was the only way he could get close enough to them. He hated the ocean but he could never quite let himself abandon this beach for their sake. So, here he sat.]

[He doesn't seem to have noticed Lance, though, so that was good. He quietly sits on the dock with his knees drawn up to his chest. Get closer?]

[Lance only knows of humans through the stories his grandparents have told him and his siblings. They were tales that always ended in a warning, a threat, do not ever trust a human. While there are those who might seem kind, eventually their curious nature's betray them and they will bring harm or death to merfolk. Lowering himself back down to just keep his eyes above the waterline Lance held his breath as he watched the lone figure.

'Nothing seems dangerous about it. It's just sitting there. Why is it alone?'

As a species merfolk tend to be a cautious sort. At least the ones who aren't Lance. Even when he was little he had an insatiable curiosity about him that often led to trouble. While he always managed to get himself out of it, the number of scoldings he's gotten over the years are in the double digits. Still, it seems he hasn't quite learned his lesson.

Diving back down into the darkening water Lance quickly zipped towards the direction of the dock. Approaching one of the support beams he slowed and carefully surfaced underneath the structure. Through the cracks and spaces between the wooden planks he could make out the humans location. It's a quiet evening where the only sounds are the ocean itself and the few birds still about.

'Let's see just how scary these humans actually are.'

If he's honest there is a part of him that's a little hesitant about what he's got planned, but he assures himself that he's got the upper hand. The water is his home and no way would a single human be able to catch him. Taking up position right under the human he pulls in a deep breath and yells.]
