So when he picked up a signal from the distant planet of Chorus from a faction searching for a gun for hire that knew infiltration, he'd taken the opportunity to take the long trip, seeking the adventure of being somewhere he'd never been before. It didn't take long to figure out these people were committing crimes he didn't want any part of, an experience he definitely didn't want to repeat.
Before he could take action, though, Carolina and the Reds and Blues broke in to the ship and brought everything to a halt. York double-crossed the other mercenaries on the ship, and when a Pelican attempted to land on the ship from the planet he fought off the entire cargo bay crew to allow them to land. He had no idea what was going on, really—he just knew these must be the good guys, if they were trying to board this den of thieves and murderers.
Once the Pelican landed, he learned that Wash and Carolina were on board, along with some other soldiers that had been embroiled in the sham civil war of this planet. He couldn't believe it when he heard her voice. He'd known she had survived the war after seeing the news reports, but here she was, in the flesh. And here she was again, bringing justice to the galaxy in the form of apprehending Malcolm Hargrove. York helped out—he knew the ship better than they did.
Once this had all been taken care of and he hitched a ride back down with them to the planet, York and Carolina had all the time in the world to get to know each other again. It was wild, and just having the privilege of hearing her talk was worth everything that had happened to him. It took several get-togethers (York knew better than to call them 'dates') before she seemed ready to explore getting to know him in a romantic capacity, and he was perfectly okay with the wait this took.
And tonight? Tonight he's willing to call what they've just experienced a date, because after coming back to base and heading to her quarters to socialize, they've come closer and closer together on the edge of the bed while they talk. York is sitting with his hand resting on the bed behind her back, his upper arm touching her shoulder. She's laughing, and he smiles. "Hey, Carolina?"

Indeed, the tall and soft-voiced admiral by the name of Aether Brandier might have been all those things. The base she was transferred to was always busy, going from sortie to sortie at a pace that seemed like the man in charge was challenging the world itself. It took almost a week to get him to spend some time alone with her, and then another week before she managed to proposition him - a decision that was now proving that maybe the "doesn't know how to have fun" part wasn't entirely true. ]
