memes... in space!
Carl Sagan once said, "The surface of the earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. Recently, we've waded out a little way, and the water seems inviting." And now? Now the cosmic ocean is just riddled with tropes.
It's awesome.
how.
- post your characters
- put any preferences in your comment, including a prefered role if you like
- tag around, using RNG for situational inspiration if necessary
- rule space
who.
a) normal self - your character is just your character. but in space.
b) captain space, defender of earth - or jupiter or krypton or tatooine or vulcan or you know whatever. you're a space hero defending the home planet from space.
c) generation shipper - you were born on a spaceship and you'll die on a spaceship because everyone is just always in spaceships. planets are for archaeologists and anthropologists and other nerds.
d) expanded universe-er - traveling from planet to planet is totally normal. your bff is from like 4 parsecs away nbd.
e) space marines - ...space marines.
f) troglodyte - somehow, everyone started going to space real casual and you missed it. find out what all the buttons do.
g) something else - hot alien babe? space pirate? asteroid miner? star fleet padawan cylon? the infinite expanses of space are the limit. because there is no sky in space.
what.
1) astral finale - time to go up into space for a boss battle in an amazing technicolor battlefield.
2) boarding party - ain't no party like a boarding party 'cause a boarding party don't stop! ...'til the other side surrenders.
3) death world - the ship's run out of fuel on perhaps literally the most dangerous, volcano-having, evil-monster-harboring planet in the known galaxy. have fun with that.
4) earth that was - [insert home planet here] was lost to [insert devastating thing here]. wander in space forever or find a new home for the survivors.
5) hurl it into the sun - you have a super important mission in space: destroy something in the nearest star without exploding yourself in the nearest star.
6) it's a small world after all - of all the galaxies in all the 'verses, somehow you only ever have awkward chance encounters with life forms you really don't want to.
7) lost colony - ohei we found that ship/colony/signal we thought we lost all those years ago. i bet nothing terrible will happen if we go investigate it now.
8) no gravity for you - sometimes things break in space. hopefully your spanner won't float away when the artificial gravity breaks.
9) planet looters - quick, defend your planet from the invaders here to take all your water/gold/sheeps! alternately: quick, jump in a ship so we can go raid that planet for all its water/gold/sheeps!
10) reentry scare - you should be slowing down. why aren't you slowing down.
11) space madness - been out here too long, man. things are getting real 2001: a space odyssey.
12) war of earthly aggression - time to space-maraud and conquer other planets. in the name of your planet, which makes it totally legit.
13) get your trope on - bang around on tvtropes until you find something you like. do it.
14) choose your own spaceventure - you've all seen trek wars and battlestar andromeda. you do you.

a7, we dead space now
Until their ship picked up a distress signal in the area.
There wasn't supposed to be anyone or anything out here. ]
Decoding... the distress signal appears to be emanating from "USG Ishimura". The Ishimura is a planetcracker-class ship owned by the Concordance Extraction Corporation, hereafter to be referred to as simply "CEC".
... There is an 87.5% chance it is operating within this section illegally.
Advise next course of action.
i am sorry this took so long but here I am.
It probably wouldn't be remiss to check it out, but it depends upon the number of individuals aboard the ship. After all, we wouldn't want to stumble upon something not even I could handle.
[after millenia of training alongside Rose, pearl is fairly confident in her combat capabilities. even if she is just a pearl.]

f-12;
However, to be able to learn quickly, she first has to not know about some kind of skill, which she Detests. She musr know everything, as the absence of knowledge is a weak spot in her purely hypothetical armor. Also her literal armor, as it happens--she's lost her limb enhancements, and she's pretty annoyed about it.
The culmination of all these things is her smacking at various buttons on a grade-A Homeworld ship's communications panel, hopefully not causing too much damage.
She's mumbling things. Okay, just one thing, repeated: clod. She's trying her best.]
f-12...please tell me we are conquering homeworld in stevens name
[pearl enters the room, gracefully and quietly as always. that's not quite her intention; she was simply built that way. and yet, she walks with her head held high, in itself an act of defiance. pearl towers over the other gem as she stares at her 'work,' before speaking somewhat tersely.]
It might be best if we didn't break the ship's controls. You've got more experience with this type of technology than I, haven't you?
[the idea of somehow figuring out how to work this thing before peridot is extremely appealing. pearl reassures herself that she's not that petty, and proceeds to scan the buttons, trying to quickly deduce how to figure out how to control this before peridot...breaks the controls. yes. that's why.]

[The large, insectoid creatures that had been swarming Sergeant Walker en masse are now reduced to ash courtesy of Exodus's eye beams, and Exodus himself is extending a hand to help the other man back up.]
Know you anything about these creatures? They burn well enough, but their numbers seem without limit.
no subject
If I didn't know better I would have guessed on Rachni but they were hunted to extinction. No, these are different. There's plenty of weird insectoids in the universe though.
no subject
Ah. Well, I hope you are more familiar with this vessel than I then. We need to find whatever is leading this invasion and cut it off at the head.

[He pauses, hearing a skittering sound from a direction he can't immediately identify.] Which way would be quickest to the bridge?
no subject
There's usually a central elevator shaft which leads to every deck. Even the bridge. Or a maintenance tunnel. But if we're going to the bridge then we need to head the other way. Unless you want to enjoy the view? [There just might be a little smugness in his voice at that.]
no subject
In the meantime, lead on. [His tone is still brisk and calm; if he's bothered by the turnabout of Sergeant Walker taking point and being his backup rather than the other way around, he does a good job of not letting it show.] I'll follow your lead.

The skittering is growing louder, and it's definitely coming from up ahead now. Exodus speaks quickly, his tone low.] If I immobilize them at range, you can pick them off with your rifle. We might be able to keep them bottlenecked. [Ordinarily that would be a plan, but with the sergeant in charge now it's demoted to suggestion. This kind of close-quarters combat is more in line with Walker's training than his own anyway.]
no subject
Sound plan. [He then motions to the corpse.] At least we know now that these creatures took over this ship.

[Lifting two fingers to his temple, his mouth hardens into a thin line as he reaches out with his psychic senses. And not a moment too soon, for there they are, rounding the corner, a horde like before. These things clearly like to do their hunting in packs, whatever they are. The ones at the front hiss eagerly, mandibles clicking in excitement, but the hissing quickly takes on a confused note when they find they can go no further, their horse-sized bodies held in place by Exodus's TK.]

Hm. It seems these things have little mind for strategies beyond overwhelming numbers, does it not? Well shot, Sergeant.

Standard Star Trek Set-up GO
But Junti has never seen a spaceship, or met any aliens, before. She's never really seen much besides the Chapterhouse, and the Girl's House before that. So when day (or what passes for it on a ship) came, she snuck out of her room after the others had fallen asleep, to wander the corridors taking in as much as she can. It really isn't wrong unless you got caught, right?
...But someone is coming! She presses herself against the wall, hoping it might help. Why doesn't this place have anything to hid behind?]
Righto
[I have never read Vattu but she looks adorable!]
Enterprise was bustling, as usual, with their new guests and the crew trying to accommodate them. Trade talks were going between the ambassadors and the aliens. Jim hated ambassadors, not that he ever shared that sentiment with Spock. They were just so pretentious and entitled and they got in the way of how he ran his ship. They were so important and the whole atmosphere on the bridge changed while they were on board. Everyone was nervous until they left and right now the talks were happening on the ship which meant they'd be on board even longer. He had to just keep to his routine and weather the storm. It was hardly a storm, more just an inconvenience but that was enough to displease Jim Kirk.
He wanted to be adventurous and find aliens and explore. Not sit here and endure someone else's board meeting. But he was wandering the halls like you do when you're a captain, coffee in hand. He spies a little purple creature suddenly hug the wall and he looks toward them. One of his guests. He approaches slowly.
"Hello. Are you lost?" he smiled gently. She looked nervous. "I'm Captain Kirk, can I help?"
no subject
Oh. Oh. Junti recognized him now. It was the Captain, the one who'd met them (well, met High Chemist Kurna) when they had been brought aboard. She remembered thinking how strange he and the others had looked, all pink and hairless, with flat feet and a smooth head, except for the sides. Not like a Surin at all.
Reflexively, Junti made the gesture of greeting and bowed her head.
"I am low before thee, O Captain. I was-- I am-- I'm looking for--" The greeting had not bought her enough time to come up with suitable explanation. "I mean-- This place is too big!"
...She'd never been good at this sort of thing.
no subject
"There is no reason to say all that. It's fine, you're my guest, I want to help any way I can." because forget the stupid ambassadors, this was his ship and she was his responsibility.
"It is a large ship, I will give you that." a proud smile. "But I'd be happy to escort you anywhere you are trying to go, miss...?"
no subject
What she really wants is to ask him how the ship flies, what makes it stop, what makes it go, what makes it turn, how people don't suffocate in it, and much more. But she realizes that if she asked that, he might think she was spying. And then he would tell Kurna, and Kurna would see to it that she was never allowed out of the Chapterhouse ever again. And then she would never see a starship.
"Where... do you get food?" Saying it, she realizes how flimsy it sounds, but it cannot be unsaid.
no subject
He smiled at her. Such a delightfully innocent request! "That's a great question, come with me, I'll show you the mess hall." the officer's mess to be exact. It was smaller and less crowded so she'd have less competition for examining a machine. He explained on the way how they had machines that materialized food on demand and they all had libraries of recipes to choose from.
"Anyone can eat anything in any combination here. You're welcome to try it, if you like." if she isn't so bold then he'll order a refill on his coffee to illustrate to her how it worked.
no subject
The mess is somehow even brighter than the halls had been, and Junti squints as her eyes adjust. She instinctively looks around for the "libraries" though she knows, intellectually, he means computer programs. The Chapterhouse had a library, full of scrolls, though they had all been long ago digitized, and Acolytes had to get special permission to tough the originals. And wear special gloves. But Junti had always found being in their presence oddly soothing.
Her eyes adjusted, Junti spots several panels set into the wall, with slots, buttons and what looks like a panel. Near one of them is a table, with a pile of colorful plastic squares stacked on it. Junti points to the pile and asks:
"Is that the library? How do I use it?"
no subject
The enterprise didn't have print books the way her world did. The only tomes were the ones brought on by the crew and even those were rare. When one couldn't bring much in the way of personal effects, a tablet was much better to use.
The room is bright though Jim is very used to it by now and he forgets how hard it is to see in here. He notices that Junti is struggling though and commands the lights down 30%. That should help.
"That sure is. It's just a matter of finding the one you'd like and inserting it into one of the replicator control panels. Liiiike... let's find a refill for my coffee as an example." he rifled through the stack until he found the drink and mindlessly plugged it into the replicator. He then touched some controls for temperature and the volume of his drink. Soon he had another mug of jet fuel.
He gestured for her to try.
