Few fantastical creatures have captured the imaginations of those of us stuck in the mundane quite like mermaids. It's understandable: the ocean provides an endless canvas for us. Who knows what may live in those deep, seemingly endless depths? There's something intriguing about the mermaid, too, as a being that exists between two worlds. Beautiful human up top, dangerously alien down below, a mix between the comforting and the unknown. Such a combination is all very alluring, speaking perfectly of both the sense of freedom and adventure and and the impending doom offered by the high seas. Because of the mystery and excitement provided by mermaids, people have been considering what the relationships between those who live on land and those who dwell in the sea would be like. For as long as there have been mer-tales, there have been stories of lucky or unlucky seafarers who earn the attention of mermaids. In some cautionary tales, merfolk are said to be little more than sirens who relish in driving sailors to their doom, luring them to the waters with gorgeous songs so that ships may be crashed, blood spilt, and flesh rend to fill the bellies of sea-demons. In other, more optimistic tales, there are lonely mermaids who fall in love with sailors, fishermen, and princes and will do anything to be with their objects of affections, even if it means turning to sea foam. Of course, earning a mermaid's love may not be better than becoming their prey; after all, in their ignorance of the children of earth, they may pull a person under the water and forget that air is a necessity for some. Perhaps you are a human or other offspring of the land who has grown up with the tales of mermaids. You know that caution must be taken should you go on the ocean, lest you become nothing more than a meal. If you were in that situation, you would never fall for the merfolk's charms. However, that's so much easier said than done. On the other hand, you could be a mermaid. Whether you are "good" or "bad" depends entirely on upbringing, just like with anyone else. Finally, you've come upon a land dweller. Haru likes to be outside in the summer -- but usually, he likes to be in the water. Sitting up here in this tiny little wooden boat is absolutely sweltering, despite the fact that he's stripped down to his shorts and he's even kicked off his shoes. But he's got to fish something up, if he wants to eat, and so here he is, slumped a little bit sideways on the wooden bench, his rod fairly loose in his hands. Hopefully he can get a mackerel.

He supposes he shouldn't complain -- Grandma would say, at least it's sunny at all. It's much better than a hurricane, it's true, but... he could definitely appreciate even just the sun hiding behind a passing cloud for a moment.]

Oswald is confident that, if he can just keep a level head and get more onto the rocks... he'll be fine. He's more worried the tide is going to come in, or he'll slip off what little hold he as on the rocks and will drown in his heavy armor, unable to get the strength to save himself. ]

[Fortunately for him, the mermaid that he's recently come across isn't the kind that hisses and eats people. She could if she wants, but luring in sailors only to devour them is such a waste of time. And lure in sailors she does, mostly to talk their ear off and give them stories in an attempt to keep them there with her. While she's fascinated with humanity, the idea of company is more appealing than the concept of the sailors being taken with her. So once she's told her tales and spent enough time in the company of a wayward sailor, she gives them directions and guides them to the right path so they can get out of her hair and she can move on to luring in someone more interesting.

The problem with so many of the men that happen across her is the fact that they're painfully dull, all full of the same sort of stories. Which ends in her being a bit more ambitious in seeking out the company of others, crossing oceans in order to find ships full of men. Surely one of them would entertain her.

And it would be easier, she thinks, to have legs the same as they do. She loves what she is, would never actually change it, but can't deny that there's a jealousy there in the pit of her stomach that makes her wish she could explore land the same as they do. Which is exactly why she gets close to a ship she can sense is dangerous, filled with unsavory sorts who she's sure she shouldn't go near. But that's exactly the sort who can be easily manipulated with promises of guidance to treasure, if they manage to entertain her well enough.

She follows them for days to their next port, and observes from a safe distance until she finds her target. The Captain, heading off his ship after the rest of his men. She swims in closer, splashing loudly in an attempt to catch his attention. But just in case she doesn't get it, she's not above mysterious creepy laughter that sounds like someone having entirely too much fun out in the ocean at sundown.]

Well not so much of a boy anymore. He'd tell you he was a man, certainly, though Bucky Barnes hasn't many of the trials and tribulations the world has to offer, and none of the horrors that will shape his life for decades to come.

For now, he is happy, he is content, and even with war brewing in the rest of the world it has not quite reached his bubble of life in New York City, where he spends time with his best friend Steve, works, goes out on dates with pretty girls, and sometimes goes down to the docks.

Usually, when Bucky goes down to the docks, it's to smoke and look out at the ships, and dream about seeing the world. But there's one day when he's doing that, daydreaming, listening to the bustle of the docks and finishing off his cigarette, when he sees something bright and shiny glittering in the water at the edge of the pier.

Bucky squints, drops his cigarette to the ground and puts it out before going over to investigate. He stops just before the edge and tilts his head, hearing a scrap of... music?

He lays down on the wood and hangs his upper body over the edge of the pier, arms braced against it, and comes face to face...

...with his own face.

Bucky stares dumbly at... himself? for a very long moment before he manages to stammer out a few very eloquent words.]
