Apprentice(shipping)
![]() From the moment we begin our lives, we're learning. It's imperative to surviving, to growing - don't walk in the shadows, it's dangerous, don't touch the fire, you'll be hurt. These days, most continue to hone this natural instinct with formal schooling, but that's certainly not the end all, be all of knowledge. If you go to school or not, if you have the opportunity or otherwise, you won't stop sharpening your mind after those formative years. That's just not the way our incredible brains work. You, specifically, have actually decided to something equally incredible: you want to really dedicate yourself to learning a skill, and what better way than an apprenticeship? Formal or informal, you're under someone's tutelage, absorbing everything they can teach, growing closer to them in the process... ...unfortunately, though, you've gained a little something extra with that bite from the fruit of knowledge. You've fallen for your mentor. Do you realize this pitfall immediately, or will you have to learn the hard way?

[So it's safe to say that the Galleon has been docked in one place for a long time now. That's plenty of time for a stowaway to sneak on board; and there are many rooms where she might hide away. The hold's a good one, and of course there's the engine room, which Marvelous doesn't set foot in by principle because the machines confuse him. He might have to fix that at some point, if he's going to get the ship up and running again. As far as brigs go, this one isn't very high tech, no, but Marvelous is the kind of man who balks if you put a can opener in front of him.]
[The day he discovers the stowaway is a day of much confusion, and staring (on Marvelous' end), and then some height jokes, because she's tiny, and Marvelous, who has never been very tall for a man, is glad to have found someone whose head he can look over. Thank you, space gods. He grabs her by the shoulders and steers her into the galley, because yes, she's a stowaway, and yes, Marvelous has just gone through a really bad mutiny, but people need to eat, and they deserve to sleep in a proper cabin, and for better or for worse, Marvelous has always been one of those bleeding heart kinds of guys. He just pretends otherwise. Sometimes.]
[He gives her some time to rest up. He hasn't really gotten around to asking her who she is or where she comes from. Considering it might be a sensitive topic, he kind of wants to ease into that.]
[Barging into her cabin early one morning isn't the best way to do that.]
Get up, get up! Meteor shower!
[Yeah, he likes to watch them from the exosphere.]

[So what did that say about Five? She tried not to think about it too hard. Marvelous hadn't seemed to mind having her around, and she couldn't complain about having three square meals, and a proper bed to bunk in. And, seeing his reaction to household appliances, it was probably a good thing she was there to get his ship in shape. He'd be completely lost without her. Even if she did say so herself.]
[She sat bolt upright when he barged in, wondering how in the world he still managed to surprise her. But his enthusiasm is catching.]
I'm up! I'm up!

[The ship is docked in the exosphere, rich and black, and the aura of the planet beneath them glows a hazy blue. When the meteors first breach the atmosphere, they are nothing special--slow tumbling rocks that break through the invisible envelope, then suddenly pick up speed. They burn white before they plummet through the sky. It's this part that Marvelous likes. There is sound on the ship, but not in the thermosphere. The meteors are quiet, glowing giants.]
Good luck, huh? [He certainly thinks so. There are many superstitions on a pirate ship; Marvelous eschews none of them.]

[She smiles as she watches the meteors, like strange fireworks streaking across the sky. She's never seen them from such a vantage point. She probably never would have, if she hadn't stowed away on this particular ship.]
I'd say it's very good luck.

So are you going to tell me what brought you here?
no subject
I stole something. Something valuable enough to kill for. I just needed a place to hide, but I kinda like it here. With you.
no subject
And these people--do you think they're still looking for you?
[That's really his primary concern right now.]
no subject
[But there was always a chance that somebody might recognize her if she ever bumped into them again.]
I'm sorry if I've brought you trouble. I never meant for anything like this to happen.

Do you know anything about sailing, though?
[An invisible shield surrounds the ship, so they can talk and breathe, but in every other respect it is very old-fashioned. It has two masts with square sails. It's just like the pirate ships you'd expect to find on the ocean. The only difference is it's... red.]
no subject
[But that wouldn't necessarily stop her from trying. She's a very ambitious little stowaway.]

The sails are reefed because we're anchored. We need to unfurl them before we can sail. Let me show you how, and then we'll leave.
[He wouldn't care about the pace of their journey, except people are after her, and he'd rather they not get their hands on her. He's still curious about what she stole, and he decides he'll ask once they're safely out of orbit. For now, he walks over to the mainmast. The ropes around the boom are tied up tight.]
