Haunted House Meme

Everyone knows to stay away from the large empty house on the hill. It’s haunted. But maybe you’re seeking a thrill, or maybe you’re searching for something lost or locked away. Maybe you are the ghost haunting the old building. Maybe your car has stalled, and the house on the hill is the only building for miles. But is it empty, or is there something waiting?

The Haunting
A. Ghosts. Creepy, tragic, and possibly violent, they’ve got unfinished business in this world and you’re the unsuspecting victims who have just become the targets for their wrath.
B. Creatures. Unearthly monsters summoned from a hell-dimension or mutations created by a mad scientist, this is their house now, and they are fascinated and hungry.
C. The People in the Walls. Someone—or several someones—have been living in this house. They’re no longer human anymore, and their sanity has been frayed to the very edge. They’ve been surviving on mice and bats until now. But now you're here, and don't you look delicious?
D. The House Itself. Maybe it was built evil, or maybe it became evil after the horrible deeds that were committed in it. The very walls of the house are soaked with blood, and the house is angry, and hungry. It has you now, and it doesn’t plan to let you out.
E. The Cabin in the Woods Experiment. None of this is natural phenomena. You don’t know it yet, but you’re part of a larger experiment. You’re the rats in the maze, and the scientists are observing—and toying with—your every move.
F. Choose your own horror movie plot!

1) Ashley's ancestral mansion is a beautiful gothic manor in rural Louisiana, not too far from New Orleans. It's neglected and crumbling, and a grief-stricken Ashley haunts the halls, kept company by the remains of his dead family. This Ashley is severely depressed and half mad due to remaining in these circumstances.

2) Social butterfly Ashley Raventon seeks thrills and is drawn to the macabre. He's heard the most bloody rumors about the haunted location in question, and cannot resist exploring. All on his own, of course.]

There was not a single thing in this world that had no story of its own to tell, houses — large and small, alike — especially so, with all the people who lived within them, all the people who were born and who died. There were memories ever encased in walls that were witness to all the words spoken, in rugs and floors, that braved spills of food and scraping of high heels, or mattresses that soaked up sorrowful tears of maidens. There were times when all those things bloated so much that the memories would spill over, break through the invisible veil between the physical and the spirit worlds and become like echoes audible even for humans. Hauntings, they called them, then, and those frightened them beyond any reason, no matter how harmless it all was.

The older the house or manor, the more memories it held, the more likely these echoes were to spill— yet in all his life, Legolas had not encountered a place so silent as this castle, as if all within it was scared into deadly stillness. He could hear not a peep from the moment he stepped through the large, steel gates, artfully crafted some hundreds of years past, squeaking from disuse as they opened and closed today. It was the only noise, beyond the bird song, to accompany him, and he felt himself revolting against this quiet stillness.

It did not bode well, and dread slithered its grasp up his spine, chilling and sticky, taking firm hold, but not firm enough to guide his limbs and make him turn back. He thought he should listen to his instincts, briefly, but at the same time the certainty that there was nothing in this world that could bring him harm kept him going forward instead. No spirit, no matter how malicious in life, could harm an elf, after all.

But was it truly spirits here?

He couldn't tell, and the castle loomed menacingly before him. Tall, its spires resembling claws that reached out for the skies and clouds from the ground. But he was a guest here, of a sort, invited to a grand reception for... no reason whatsoever, only to perhaps show off the wealth of the owner. Legolas had barely known this family, but his standing among the aristocracy was high, even with the truth of his nature was a secret none knew. He would brave this, he would leave, and never again return. This place already made his skin crawl, and it was awfully difficult to spook an elf.

Inside, some guests were already milling about. His entrance was announced to all, but he knew few names of those present. Yet instead of gravitating towards the faces familiar, he approached a face unknown prior to know. A tall man whose presence could not be simply ignored. Legolas offered a small smile, a nod of his head in a greeting, then: "Our gracious host had spared no expense, had he not?"

It was a beautiful building, and Ashley could not resist. Not when it came to the rumors and stories, increasingly macabre, of the abandoned hospital on the hill.

He suggested it to his friends, as they were bored and drinking. The cream of Louisiana society, young and beautiful, and all of them burning bright enough that they were sure to burn out fast.

Ashley accepted a gulp from the bottle that they were sharing. Enough to make them all a little more brave, but Ashley didn't drink so much that it would make him foolish. He wanted to take in every detail of the place, and didn't want to risk missing sight of a ghost.

As they crossed over the threshold of the place, dusty with neglect and marked throughout the foyer with spray paint tags from disrespectful trespassers, Ashley regretted that he'd brought his friends. Twig and Molochai were noisy, Zillah was demanding, and all three of them were distracting Ashley from the lovely eeriness of the place. If he'd come alone, he could have the place to himself and linger as he liked.

When they headed down a hallway to explore, Ashley turned the other way, slipping from their company and setting off on his own.

[Feel free to use/kill the NPCs as suits our narrative. Alternately, all three NPCs are vampires in their canon, and Ashley is not--he may not yet have discovered the nature of his friends. Interested in either survival horror or atmospheric plot.]
