little steps No matter how much they care for the other person and want to be with them, some people simply can't dive head first into relationships. Little things that form intimacy and romance, little acts we take for granted - being close, holding hands, kissing, showing affection in public - they won't or can't do...at least not right off the bat. Something in their past, their experiences, their trauma, or even their personality holds them back. For both them and the person they're "dating," as it were, this can lead to a frustrating experience. Still, steps can be taken towards letting the walls fall down. Little, tiny steps, but those can mean the world all the same. The People One With the help of a partner, one person warms up. The Actions Talking → A relationship can't exist if there's not some communication, so either learn to use your words or become so close you can speak without them. Kissing → Another kind of touch, when you think about it. Cuddling → ...at least they're warm and, hopefully, soft. Sleeping → You're at your absolute weakest when you're asleep. It shows trust to doze off around this person. Public Display → It's one thing to be in love in private, but showing you care in public is a different story. Kind Words → Three little words (more or less) are all it takes. Why, then, are they so hard to get out? Sex The ultimate stumbling block to some. To be laid blissfully bare is to truly let your guard down.

The fact that Asuramaru continued to take control of him a little longer each day made the others worry over what was happening with him. Of course, the whole heightened senses and strength thing that he had been displaying more as of late didn't help any when he tried to reassure the others that he was perfectly fine and that they were doing nothing but worrying for no reason and that he should be taking all of these (dangerous) changes more seriously...

...and yet he couldn't seem to worry about any of that and instead, had been mulling over what to get Mika for his birthday.

Because, yes, even with being a full-blooded vampire now, he still wanted to celebrate (albeit belatedly) the blond's birthday and it was why he had found himself standing outside Mika's door.

He never slept, of course, but he had tracked the blond's movements to his room with having heard him on his way inside, which, he knew, caused the blond to worry.

But really, so what if he could hear a lot better now? Wasn't that a good thing? Especially for something like in battle? Never mind the whole probably turning into a demon thing because he's fucked himself over one too many times with being a reckless idiot who would do anything for those he cares about. He's fine! Really!

He sighs to himself, wondering how Mika will take any of this or if he'll even want to be reminded of such a thing as a birthday and barges his way into the blond's room then, not bothering to knock as he figures Mika could easily smell or hear him regardless. ]

[It had taken work for them to get this far.

The first time that Yu had asked her out, Kyoko had slapped him. It was a thoughtless, panicked slap, as though she were trying to break him out of a hysterical state. It was only much later that she thought to apologize to him for it and later yet that she agreed, half convinced that it was some sort of bet that he would lose within a week.

He didn't, but boyfriend and girlfriend felt like they were just crudely applied titles. Nothing changed. Her mannerisms still sported that same comedic contrast, where she would hang over him and pull on his arm and invade his personal space, while outright refusing to hold hands (a gesture she had only done once or twice before the shift, pretending it to be part of her usual antics,) and leaving anything further out of the question. The one time she had tried, daring him to share the cookie that she had clenched between her teeth, just the hint of advance had been enough for her to recoil with such force that she fell back onto the sofa, face red.

Now she's not sure they're really dating. She doesn't know anything about romance or what it meant, but it seemed only natural that it should succeed overcoming shyness. Sometimes she thinks she wants to. times she's not sure. Kyoko likes being with Yu. He makes her happy. He's the only person she spends this much with. That could mean anything.

The question of her wants and feelings and the complications of romance seems as impossible to solve as ever, but today it's mixed with something much more easily understood: The quiet longing that she's come to associate with nostalgia. The air is cool, promising that winter will soon be upon them, and it makes her think about the warmth of his hand and the pressure that came when it took her own.

It comes a little late. They're already nearing his house. He'd offer to bake for her in response to her complaints on the matter, and she'd immediately invited herself to help him. That's normal. It's a part of their normal routine as anything. She shouldn't worry about anything else. She thinks that for a moment, before realizing that her extended silence has already broken their usual pattern and she doesn't know what she wants but she doesn't want it to be the same.

It's a subtle thing at first. She shifts a little closer to him, close enough that every few steps her shoulder winds up brushing up again him. Her hand reaches out, the back of her fingers just barely touching the back of his hand. The process repeats itself once, twice, before those fingers find their way to his palm and between his fingers. Her palm presses against his, fingers curling around his hand. Her head is turned, cheeks colored from embarrassment as much as cold. She can't look at him and any conversation topics that she might have had fled long ago, but his hand is as warm and soft as she remembers and nothing has changed even thought everything is different now.

It's not a bad feeling after all.]

[ so he gets another shot at life. an actual one, this time. no more copies, no more fakes; he's a real boy now. it's something he never thought he'd ever have the chance to experience, and at first he had no idea what to do with himself. he still doesn't, if he's being honest with himself, but he figures he might as well try to figure it out for lack of anything better to do. it's sort of fun, in its own way, to experience normal human things for the first time. he still has riku's memories to guide him, but it's different from experiencing them first hand.

the one thing that's still familiar, still a constant, is naminé. she has always been a part of his life, past and present, and he's mostly relieved that that hasn't changed. even his feelings for her are still there, fainter now than they were back at the castle, but the urge to protect her has remained unchanged. he doesn't try to analyze them too closely; they're complicated and he's still new to actually feeling his own emotions, but he knows there's something there that's more than just his desire to protect her. a part of him can guess at what it is, and it's both vaguely terrifying and overwhelming at the same time.

and he feels it now, sitting next to her on the beach, toes buried in the sand. he's not sure if it's because of riku's memories, but he always finds himself coming back here at the end of the day. lately, he's invited her along and they end up sitting in silence most of the time, watching the sun set before heading home. there are things they probably should talk about, about the castle and about everything that happened afterward, but he never knows how to start.

or maybe they don't even need to talk about it. they're starting with blank slates now, no use dwelling on things that happened in the past. ]

[They never needed alarms to know when someone was in the warehouse, just strategically placed empty paint cans, and these days it's always Mick's turn to check the clattering. It's a low, forbidding rumble that greets her, but the heat gun is already being set aside and the surprise is everywhere in his face as he starts closer.

He's never been demonstrative, as a rule. His time as Chronos hadn't exactly improved that. So yeah, he gets closer, within easy reach, but he doesn't take a hand, doesn't push her hair back behind her ear, he just stands, a little uncertain, a little wary. This is new, whatever it is, it's new and he doesn't know yet what to call it, if they're going to call it anything, but something has to be wrong if she's coming looking for him, right?]

What's the matter, something wrong? This isn't a nice place for a nice kid.
