One small spanner in the works can change nothing and yet everything at the same time.
The world you live in is a lot like the normal one. History progresses more or less as it should. Technology flourishes. Empires build upwards, then crumble and fall. The only difference? Somehow, along the way, society has stratified into three categories:
- Normal: The regular folks. Nothing more, nothing less.
- Fighters, Berserkers, or Servants: The nomenclature depends on who you ask, but the fact reminds that these people have incredible powers, the nature of which varies yet can range from psychic abilities to resilience to super strength. However, the downside is that, without a "master" (we'll get to that later) as a partner, they can feel listless and not even have control of their powers. Their drive, whether they accept it or not, is to find the true master that will calm them and help them sharpen their abilities - and there is only one, true match. No substitutes accepted, and the longer they hold off on finding their master, the looser their grip becomes. In some parts of society, fighters are considered second class citizens, but this isn't a usual situation.
- Masters: Think of these folks as focusing lens. They usually have no special powers, but they can hone the abilities of their "servant" to a T. There are a few benefits, including having someone willing to protect...and sometimes, care...for you at all costs. However, the primary benefit is that unpaired masters are often killed off by rogue fighters or forced into bonds that don't work by half-insane ones.
Once a master/fighter pair is made, there have been reports of psychic connections and fighters being strengthened by the mere presence of their master, which means pairs ofter live together. This is helpful, because despite the fact that you would think pairs would want to peacefully coexist, there's been strife since, well, before anyone can remember. Other pairs will feel a desire to defend their territory and status, and even non-violent pairs will find themselves attacked. There's
One more important thing to note: it's not generally accepted for fighters and masters to be romantically involved. In fact, it's frowned upon. But, given the close living quarters, expectations, bonds, and the fact that no one will be as close or as understanding - ah, it's best to say there's more of a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Yet as a fighter or a master, you won't fall for your partner...
...will you?

PROMPTS
- Discovery: You've just found out your status as fighter or master. How do you respond?
- First Sight: Oh, who is that? Whoever it is, your heart is already racing and your instincts are kicking in.
- Trying It Out: It's a trial period for your fighter/master pairing, and you must get into sync.
- Bond: You've decided that this is the forever relationship you want and are prepared for the ceremony, which is, essentially, a blood oath.
- Not Right: Because of societal pressure or just by being unbonded at the wrong time, you've been forced into a partnership that doesn't work. Aside from being miserable, it could also be dangerous, as the fighter's powers could go haywire.
- Unhealthy: In this relationship, the fighter is viewed by the master as their property. Or, in the inverse, the master is viewed as weak and resented.
- Adoration: Unlike the unhealthy relationship, in this bond, the fighter puts the master above all else and quite nearly worships them.
- Save: You want to take away a fighter or a master because you care for them and their partner isn't treating them well. That's noble...but is it such a good idea?
- Doting: Some fighters or masters feel the urge to take care of their partner's needs, especially when they forget to take care of themselves.
- Fluff: There are actually fun, loving moments between the well-adjusted fighter and master, even in the most volatile of scenarios.
- Calm: It's a rare time of peace where the partners can be almost domestic.
- Heal: Injuries and mental hurts need to be taken care of, simultaneously strengthening the bond.
- Assigned: The pairing of you and your fighter or master was not natural. You were picked strategically for each other.
- Power Up: You have to become stronger. Luckily, you can get power and focus right from the tap.
- Need: You're desperate for your fighter or master, and your body and mind are rebelling against you because of it.
- Training: A fighter and master must work as one, and this ability must be practiced.
- Sense: Your master is in trouble, you can just feel it.
- Return: You two have been kept apart and are finally able to return to each others' presence.
- Pose: Actually, you're the opposite of what you're pretending to be - ie, a fighter is really a master - and so is you're partner. You're just posing for some reason or another.
- Love: You've fallen in love, as it's incredibly hard not to do so, but you must act as if nothing's changed.
- Public: You can't take it anymore. You two want to be acknowledged as a normal couple, and you want the world to know it.
- Most Pure Partnering: What better way to hone a fighter's skill than through the ultimate support: sex? The obligatory smut option.
- Mismatched: You've fallen in love with a fighter when you're a fighter or a master when you're a master.
- Not in Step: You're a terrible pairing. The two of you together makes no sense at all, but you must make it work.
- Childhood: From the very beginning of your life, you have been brought up as the perfect fighter or master.
- Don't Belong: You're normal; the only reason you're involved in all this is because the person you love is a fighter or master.
- Masters' Privilege: Masters can have a love interest in the "normal world"; fighters cannot. Is this a point of contention between you two?
- Dark Underbelly: You're a fighter or a master from the part of the world that sees fighters as second class. Can you learn that there's a different way?
- Jealous: The person you really want isn't your partner.
- Possession: After seeing the wandering eyes of your partner, you feel the need to remind them that it's you and them against the world.
- Comfort: The events of the day didn't go as planned, and one of you needs reassuring.
- Berserk Button: Your master has been threatened. You must destroy anyone who could have harmed them. Can you be brought back from the brink?
- Unexpected: A master protecting a fighter? Unheard of!
- Double Trouble: At least one of you in your pair is sadistic and looks for other fighter and master duos to torment, both physically and sexually, even if they don't want to fighter. The other party is willing or at the very least unable to be noncompliant.
- Attacked: You're a peaceful pair, but you've been sought out and our in danger.
- Need a Boost: Right in the middle of a fight, the fighter's strength is fading. The master must step in and show support or affection.
- To Be Left Alone: Your partner is leaving you. It is your duty to convince them to stay.
- Defeat: The battle didn't go your way. Your partner has been slain in front of your eyes; if you're a master, perhaps it was to get at you. Your humiliation is cinched by your being claimed.
- Betrayal: In a twist of fate, the one you should trust the most has been working against you this entire time.

Zelos Wilder | Tales of Symphonia
Rika
[Zelos hadn't meant to fall down that cliff during that fight with another servant. Pros, he'd taken the the other guy with him. Cons, uh. He'd kind of left Rika undefended to the mafia. Because of course the enemy master had to be a mafia don
says right so in the tv tropes page. What this all meant was that Zelos was having a bitch of a time getting Rika back. Maybe she was escaping this lavish Japanese styled complex on her own already. Or sitting around drinking tea with the boss. Or tied up somewhere?! Regardless Zelos could feel his connection to her and the body count was getting fairly high by the time he found her.]
Rika!
no subject
She was more worried about Zelos. When she saw him fall over the edge of the cliff, she thought she might have lost him and she wanted to run to the edge to see if she could save him, but she was restrained before she could do anything. Of course she was beyond relieved when she still felt him and knew that he wasn't dead.
But she also knew how he was like when she first met him, and that was what she was worried about. Of course she didn't mind if these evil people died, but how would the time apart affect Zelos? She had to escape and find him again, but she never got the opportunity to put any plan in motion.
It became clear why they kept her mostly unharmed when the boss entered the room she was contained in. But becoming a master to someone else was completely out of the question to Rika. She hadn't let anything slip that would let them know that Zelos was still alive, and it was during the 'negotions' that the commotion started.
She felt her heartbeat pick up, hoping that the commotion meant that Zelos found the compound and was fighting his way to her. Still, she kept quiet, still not letting on that Zelos was in fact alive. Surprise was the best element Zelos had going for him at this moment and she wouldn't spoil that.
Once he burst into the room, however, she couldn't help the bright smile when her hopes were confirmed. She tried to stand, arms still bound and everything, but she was pushed down by one of the thugs.
Paying no mind to the thugs snarling and the boss's shocked exclamation, Rika shouted over all of them.]
Zelos! I'm okay. Take them out, I know you can do it!
[The thug covered her mouth to try to prevent any other words of encouragement, but Rika opened her mouth and bit down hard on his fingers.]
no subject
You heard the lady, fellas. [He kicked the negotiation table into the boss to slam the guy into the wall and out of the way. That just left three thugs including the one holding Rika who looked like he was getting more than he bargained for.] Time to meet your maker!
[Very cool, much flash. He couldn't help it if he had a tendency for the dramatics. It was one way to keep his mind off his anger after all. He easily beheaded one guy with his blade. These assholes. Who said they could take his-- his--
Take Rika while his back was turned!!!
Whirling he threw a dagger into the shoulder of the man holding Rika. It was enough of a distraction to get hit by a punch from the third guy though sending him on his back next to his lost master.]
...Hey hunnyyyy ♥.
[So smooth.]
no subject
Though she couldn't help but smile at his usual greeting, feeling more relief wash over her. He couldn't have been too far gone, but this also wasn't quite the time for a happy reunion. They still had enemies to take care of.
As the thug that was holding her down moved to get at Zelos with the other thug coming over to attack him too, Rika thought quickly. Free from the thug's hold, Rika tilted her body and ended up laying across Zelos in a weird position on her side. She knew the thugs wouldn't hurt her much unless the boss himself gave the change of orders, and it also so happened to place one of her immovable hands by his sword arm.
She let the healing magic flow through her (which was probably why they wanted her to be the master for some other fighter) to heal the wound she had seen on his arm. He should be able to fight these guys much better. She was sure the boss wouldn't be out for too long either.]
Get ready.
[She whispered the words to Zelos so the thugs wouldn't know any better, then when the one closest to her moved to try to grab her and pull her off Zelos, she rolled to the side instead to hopefully create another surprise attack.]
no subject
You keep this up I'm going to think you've fallen for me~.
[And then she was rolling aside and his sword was lunging forward to skewer the second thug to fall to his blade. Kicking off the soon to be corpse he ducked a swing for his own head and came up with a vicious slash from his dagger. The man fell back, crashing over a chair with an heavily bleeding gash across his chest. He wouldn't be up soon.
That just left the boss who'd regained his composure and was leveling a shotgun. Zelos raised his own weapon back, red hair streaming over his shoulders.]
What do you wanna do with this bastard, Rikka?
no subject
Keeping her eyes on the fight, Rika moved out of the ropes and glanced towards the boss. Good, he hadn't noticed that she was free yet. She stood up just as the last thug went down and as Zelos asked his question, Rika moved to stand beside him.
Fortunately it surprised the boss when he otherwise would have shot Zelos. But it would only be a distraction for a short moment while the boss cursed, so Rika answered quickly.]
I sense great evil from him, if he lives he will only abuse more fighters.
no subject
Worthless man.]
Sorry, pal. You just happened to back the wrong side.
[He looked back at Rika. Time to say something poignant?]
Where do you get off getting captured? Do you know how much effort I had to put in to get to you?
[Nope, nevermind. It's always time to tsun!]
no subject
He could try to be tsun with her, but it didn't work so well. Rika smiled at him again.]
Thank you.
[Not only did she have a usually small sense of people, she'd been with Zelos enough and they had the bond that only amplified her senses of him. Besides, his words had truth to them. She could tell he'd been through a lot to try and save her.]
I'm sorry I wasn't a better help to you.
[Her smile faded and she took a step closer to him, reaching out to touch his arm. She wanted to hug him, but she didn't want to become vulnerable at a place like this. They may have to fight again at any moment.]
Are you okay? Do you have any other injuries I can't see?
[At least his mental state seemed to be okay. That was one of her biggest concerns. That would take a lot more time to heal than any physical wound.]
no subject
...You're always an help to me. [Just saying. And not saying. He was a confusing guy like that. But it was true. When she was around he could just focus on her. Not his anger, not how despisable the world was, not the sickening things that happened in this war. ...He let go.] Yeah. One of 'em got me with a blade in my back. Think you could fix it up?
no subject
She nodded at his answer, though, happy to help him now.]
Yes, no problem. Turn around please.
[She let go of his arm so he would be able to turn and she could heal his back. It would also face him towards the door if anyone else showed up.]
Are there any others still left we should be aware of?
no subject
There's another servant around here somewhere. But we haven't run into eachother yet. The rest are just goons and if they know what's good for them they'll skedaddle. As soon as you're out I'm burning this trash heap to the ground.
[Quaint. He was feeling vindictive, what could he say. They could have done anything to Rika... The fact they didn't appear to have said just how valuable she was in their eyes. But that didn't exactly make him feel better either. He should have been protecting her. Instead he got caught up in that stupid fight and made mistakes. Costly mistakes.]
So. How's the view~?
no subject
Rika smiled softly at his question, recognizing it for the teasing that it was, though when she had first met him she hadn't understood it for a while.]
Better now that it's healed, though we will have to clean the rest of the blood off later.
[Yet again Rika felt the urge to hug him, to show how relieved she was that he was okay. She wasn't used to preventing herself from doing or saying anything, but they weren't alone. Zelos' answer was proof that they could still be attacked.
However, the other servant Zelos mentioned was probably the one that the boss wanted her to become the master to. He or she might have been abused and if it had been long enough, might even have started to lose control. While Rika didn't want to become anyone else's master, she couldn't just leave someone to that torture.]
I want to see if we can save that servant before we leave.
no subject
[Lowering his clothes, Zelos spun around. Something accomplished much easier now with Rika's gentle magic. But still. He framed a T with his hands.]
Woah, woah, woah. We don't know what this servant is like! What if they're crazy? Or bloodthirsty? Or crazy?
[Or what if he couldn't defeat said servant. Then what happened? Bad things. That was what.]
no subject
[And Rika was sure that Zelos would be able to handle the fight. Rika had a little more than healing to offer Zelos though she didn't need to use it often, like magic that could increase his defense and agility.]
no subject
[Wait that sounded kind of serious. Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck. He can't take it back. Can he.
Well.
Fuck.]
no subject
She had to calm him down, try and get him to see why she wanted to help this other servant. She finally let go of her carefully held restraint and closed the distance to hug him. It still wasn't the best place, but it was needed. She kept her eyes on the door, just in case, but she allowed herself to feel reassured that he was here and okay.]
It's okay. I'm not hurt, and I'm so glad that you're okay too. But, we're together again and if we can handle saving someone, I'd like to.
[Rika paused and pulled from the hug to look back at Zelos. There was worry on her expression, but also determination to help the servant.]
If we didn't meet when we did... if it was years later, you could have been in the same position as this other one.
no subject
Slowly, very slowly, he reached up to curl fingers in her hair.]
You're too kind. [...] Fine. But if things turn sour I will kill this servant.
[Rika came first. Always. Both practically and... He didn't want to think about it.]
...You need sexier bras. Do you even own a single push up?
[WAS NOW REALLY THE TIME? Apparently. Or he was just really embarrassed shh.]
no subject
What would the purpose of one be? I already have one that does what it needs to.
[But this was off subject.]
We don't know how much time we have here. If the servant can't be knocked unconscious or come with us willingly, then of course I would want you to do what you need to do. At least it will put out their misery.
[Though she didn't look too happy with that option, she would rather keep her own fighter alive and well above all others.]
no subject
[Removing his hand from her hair he, regretfully, pulled her arms away from him. If they were going to do this they had better do it now. Taking her hand he led the way to the door. He knew the other servant was here somewhere, could feel that aura of power. But an exact location was beyond his ability to say.]
Stay behind me.
[It was the only thing he said before opening the door. A malevolent, murderous, insane aura poured in. A masterless servant, no better than a rabid dog. But dogs could be healed, helped. ...Maybe even servants. It was time to find out.]
no subject
She gasped when Zelos opened the door. While she didn't sense other servants in the same way that Zelos did, the malevolence was strong enough that she could sense this one too. She looked in the direction it seemed to be coming from and, trusting her fighter, moved to stay behind him.]
Be careful.
[Once they got closer, she would put up the defensive barrier. It wouldn't be able to stop an attack, but it would absorb some damage. She couldn't do it too often without getting tired out, but she had no idea what this other servant's powers were. It may be worth it to use it for this upcoming fight.]
